I am reading the book “Endless Holocausts: Mass Death in the History of the United States”. It is mostly about the atrocities committed against indigenous people, African Americans, workers and those subjected to overseas wars by the US. I think it’s important to realize that so-called American exceptionalism is basically backwards in this respect. I’d like to say I still believe in American ideals but its right wing-ness gives me major pause.

To speakers of underrepresented languages: If your language isn't available in Mastodon's posting window and you'd like me to add it, please let me know.

I will need:

1. Locale code https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_ISO_639-1_codes 2-letter ISO 639-1 codes are preferred, and if not available, we can use a 639-3 code instead
2. English name
3. Native name

If your language is small, try not to be too granular re. dialect so that you will get more posts when filtering.

Boosts welcome.

Saturday was the trip home... but before we really got on the road we stopped at the Cahokia Mounds.

Cahokia was the largest pre-Columbian city in the Mississippi basin. At its height around 1100 CE, it could have had as many as 40,000 people. (By contrast, Paris at that time had about 3,000 people and London had about 15,000.)

They built over 100 enourmous mounds, the largest of which is Monks Mound, the largest pre-Columbian earthwork north of Mexico.

#Indigenous #NativeAmericans

Monks Mound. It's a 2 level mound, the highest part held the home of the chief.

You can see the people climbing the stairs to give you an idea of how big it is.
Description of Monks Mound.

It was named because some French monks built a chapel on the top of it... hundreds of years after it had been abandoned by the Cahokia people.
There's a lot of stairs.
View west from the top of the mound... in the distance you can see St Louis and the Arch.

All that said, our Pixelfed instance and hopefully soon Peertube instance are self hosted. They are in a test mode, so to speak. I do hope to find masto.host level hosting for them eventually.

In the meantime, the docker containers and the upgrades, etc. are managed by their maintainers, so that takes a lot of the edge off me (I think).

But they do need to be hosted instead, and I'm sure the Fediverse will keep growing and that day will come.

And so that is why TurtleIsland.social moved to masto.host, whom I consider the prime supplier of Mastodon hosting services.

I am extremely glad we did this, and I have 100% confidence that TurtleIsland.social is in the top echelon of server reliability.

I also have 100% confidence that TurtleIsland.social will be around for a very long time.

We can grow to any size, with any level of high demand or celebrity users. And we will grow.

I also realized TurtleIsland.social wouldn't be likely to survive if I met my ancestors or had a catastrophic health issue unexpectedly.

At this point in my life, strengthening cultural and community ties, and passing them along with a healthy dose of whatever wisdom I have accumulated to my descendants and others are my primary driving forces.

It is critically important to me that @Tzipporah be able to take an increasingly dominant role in TurtleIsland.social.

Initially, I really enjoyed the technical aspects of running a Mastodon instance. In time, making sure it was running continuously, upgraded to current versions and backed up locally and off-site did become a source of anxiety.

It was a great education though.

But I realized running servers and building community were two different things, neither served well by the combination of both for primarily one technical person.

I did find some #indigenous lyrics, but they were from the POV of the POC. I can't use those either.

I wonder if there are any (well-written and -fitting) lyrics to "This Land Is Your Land" from the POV of #colonial descendents acknowledging that

I've been enjoying #folk #guitar so thought I'd transcribe some more. I like "This Land Is Your Land" and it has some skill-expanding techniques (fast D->D7), so great choice

But boy, these lyrics.

I mean, the overall concept that white people are telling each other how much they own this land is bad enough. But also "a voice was calling: this land was made for you and me"

Manifest Destiny: The Song

I see there are #indigenous versions out there. Maybe I can swap out the lyrics

Indigenous people in Brazil shed tears of joy as the Supreme Court enshrines their land rights

Martin Scorsese’s new epic – which is released next month – is thrilling in sweep and timely in subject matter: a revisiting of real events in Osage County, Oklahoma, during the 1920s, where land rights and oil reserves made the Osage the wealthiest per capita population in the world, and the focus of murderous attention by the white inhabitants.

“Before our white brothers came to civilize us we had no jails. Therefore we had no criminals. We had no locks or keys, and so we had no thieves. If a man was so poor that he had no horse, tipi or blanket, someone gave him these things. We were too uncivilized to set much value on personal belongings. We wanted to have things only in order to give them away. We had no money, and therefore a man’s worth couldn’t be measured by it.”

Judge dismisses #pipeline #protest charges against 3 #Native women

Kirsti Marohn
Brainerd, #Minnesota
September 18, 2023 3:45 PM

"Opponents of the #Line3 oil pipeline are celebrating an Aitkin County judge’s decision to dismiss charges against three Native women related to a 2021 protest.

"Activists #WinonaLaDuke, #TaniaAubid and #DawnGoodwin helped lead rallies as #Enbridge began work on a new #OilPipeline across northern Minnesota more than two years ago.

"The charges against them stemmed from a rally on Jan. 9, 2021, when a large group gathered at a pipeline construction site near the #MississippiRiver in Aitkin County.

"The opponents, who called themselves #WaterProtectors carried signs and walked down a county road. Some Native women danced in jingle dresses, a healing tradition.

"Some group members later moved to another Aitkin County location, where they walked along U.S. Highway 169 and refused to leave a Line 3 construction site.

"LaDuke, Goodwin and Aubid were not arrested on Jan. 9. Authorities charged them weeks later by summons after identifying them in social media posts. They faced gross misdemeanor charges of trespassing and harassment, as well as misdemeanor unlawful assembly and public nuisance.

"A jury trial was scheduled to begin this week. But in a forceful opinion filed Sept. 14, District Court Judge Leslie Metzen dismissed all the charges.

"Metzen’s order noted the government’s historical mistreatment of #Indigenous people.

"'In the last 20 years I have come to a broader understanding of what we, the now dominant culture, did to try to eradicate our indigenous neighbors,' she wrote. 'We moved them by force and power and violence off the land where they lived for thousands of years. To make peace, we signed treaties with them that promised many things they never received.'

"Metzen wrote that she finds it 'within the furtherance of justice' to protect the defendants who were peacefully protesting to protect the land addressed in those treaties.

"She wrote that as respected members of #Anishinaabe tribes, LaDuke, Aubid and Goodwin were exercising their #FreeSpeech rights and #spiritual beliefs, including 'their heartfelt belief that the waters of Minnesota need to be protected from damage that could result from the #pipeline.'

'To criminalize their behavior would be the crime,' she added."

The Mayans had mastered water pressure and had fountains and toilets as early as 750 AD.

Aztecs had running water and sewage.

The Victorians In the mid-1800s were dying of cholera because they Just dumped their raw shit i the river Thames. They wouldn't shower for months at a time because they were afraid of the polluted water.

groovyseb

Incans had created aquaducts in the slopes of the vast Andes mountains to reach the emperor, cities and farmers who used agricultural terraces.

Mayans, Aztecs, and Incans were far more advanced than the savage Europeans.

prince-of-legba

My history Professor snapped on a class of 200 - 300 students at once because they kept writing in their assignments that Natives to North and South America were less advanced and less civilized than Europeans. She didn’t even bother to say how racist it was past one comment, she then literally listed all the things they said in their assignments and debunked them. In sum, Europeans came to the Americas because their civilizations were dirty, underdeveloped, starved, plagued, impoverished, and war-torn. So, the whole foundation of the idea of the supremacy of Europeans/white ppl and their countries and culture was all fabricated to justify their greed and the reality THEY needed resources, refuge, and knowledge to support themselves and their willingness to commit genocide, instigate conflict, and enslave to do so.

#Native #Indigenous #Beadwork is highly undervalued.

When I was younger it was all about expensive flash, diamonds, big diamonds, gold, platinum... but really beadwork art has so much more soul. It's way cooler, and it doesn't hurt you can have a pile of it for the price of a pair of diamond studs...

One of my ex's family were diamond wholesalers and most of her jewelry, she couldn't even wear, too dangerous.

What good is losing your life for a mortgage sized clear rock?
