Great observations by @skinnylatte on the differences between the Indonesian and Malay languages and even more down the thread.

These differences seem minor to outside observers but the pronunciations, accents, and overall word usage make them incompatible enough that a Malay speaker and an Indonesian speaker may struggle to make themselves understood by the other unless they use the formal form of the languages or resort to English.

TransJakarta CEO claims the organization will maintain the privacy of customer data collected through its Accounts Based Ticketing system which links an individual’s government identity number with their bus passes that record their journey across the Jakarta bus network.

When even the National Data Center can get breached, why should we trust anyone else in this country claiming to keep our data safe? Not to mention this is large scale public tracking and surveillance

TransJakarta wants to profile each and every passenger on the bus network by linking their government issued identity numbers with their tickets under the guise of targeted subsidy scheme so the haves will not be paying subsidized ticket fares. They also want to know exactly how you travel each day on the network as individuals. If you’re a non Jakarta resident they want to charge you a different fare.

I don’t even know where to begin my outrage https://metro.tempo.co/read/1774854/ada-perbedaan-tarif-transjakarta-bagi-warga-ktp-dki-dan-luar-jakarta-setelah-tiket-berbasis-akun-diberlakukan

So whenever I read someone in the west write a recipe that calls for ‘sambal’ and they mean ‘sambal oelek’, I get very irrationally angry. Sambal should NOT be sour. It should not have only vinegar notes. It should arguably not have vinegar at all!

Here, I got 3 different types of sambal just for lunch. There are different styles. Here are 20 types you can read about: https://whatsnewindonesia.com/ultimate-guide/others/food-and-drink/20-kinds-typical-indonesian-sambal

In 2008 I started spending extensive amounts of time in Indonesia and this post I wrote back then, of being in a small town, brings back all the feels.

I don’t know how I had the energy, but I would basically take a boat to Batam then fly to Jakarta from there, so that I could save 20 bucks.

I’m glad I did that shit. My lower back hurts just thinking about that now

I’m not sure everyone knows this but Indonesian cities have a lot of hipsters. Indonesian hipsters are a thing. Like, I’m going to a small Indonesian city and there is a third wave coffee spot named after a film stock (Ektar) that posts film photos for most of their Instagram updates, AND has a record player and vinyl nights. Also hijabi hipsters!

Also, Indonesian ‘third wave coffee’ is amazing and is, I do not exaggerate, better than anything I know of in San Francisco

Another film / airport update: Changi Airport terminal 4 scans bags immediately after immigration (other terminals sometimes defer that to at the boarding gate). Spoke with an officer, he said they were happy to hand check but I was in line specifically at one of the lower powered film safe scanners (had a huge sign that said film safe on it), so I just went ahead with the scan. Will share what happens when I develop the film!

Indonesia is so big that though I spent many years there, I really don’t think I scratched the surface beyond the urban parts of Sumatra, Java, Bali and Lombok. One day when I have months to spare (?!) I want to do a trip there from the Mentawai Islands to eating the Batak food of Sumatra to doing Java from west to east again exploring Teochew food in Pontianak, go diving in Rajah Ampat, visit the Maluku islands for the first time.

It was much easier from Singapore :/

I will be in Surabaya next weekend.

Can’t believe it’s been 5, 6 years since I’ve been to Indonesia. I’m looking forward to spending time with one of my oldest friends in the world, eating sate babi, empal goreng, bebek goreng, speaking Indonesian, struggling with Javanese, drinking excellent coffee, and just generally being in a place that feels familiar, comforting, tasty and wonderful. Can’t wait!!!

Candidates running in Indonesia’s presidential election next year must make clear their plans for transition the country away from fossil fuels and toward clean energy, policy experts say.

A survey shows young Indonesians, who make up the majority of potential voters, view environmental issues in general, and a just energy transition in particular, as crucial issues for a new president to tackle.

VP Kamala Harris today heading to Jakarta, #Indonesia “to attend the U.S.-ASEAN Summit and the East Asia Summit and engage with leaders from the Indo-Pacific,” according to the White House. My @VOANews colleague aboard Air Force Two as the pool reporter for the entire trip.

Disney is raising its Disney+ Hotstar subscription price in Indonesia from Rp199k a year to 799k starting next month and will call it the Premium plan. Monthly subs go up from 39k to 119k. Disney also introduced a lower cost “Basic” plan at 450k/annum or 65k/month. The difference? Picture quality, device logins, and concurrent screens. I heard they’re also raising prices in Malaysia and Thailand.

The service launched three years ago in Indonesia with the shockingly low price of, which in USD was (and still is), US$13 a year. At the time that was almost two months worth of subs in the US.

The current pricing plan is, honestly speaking, far too low to be sustainable. It really feels like introductory and we’ve been extremely lucky to have had it beyond the first year so I can understand why they felt the need to hike the price.

The monthly sub for Premium is much higher than Lionsgate, Catchplay, Prime, HBO GO, or Viu but comparable to Netflix’s standard plan, though Netflix has no annual plan which makes it more expensive over a year.

The way they went about announcing it could have been handled better, though. I wish they outright said at the beginning that it was introductory pricing so that when they announce the real cost there wouldn’t have been so much consumer backlash.

The up to 4x hike is quite a shock to consumers. Initially the app was very basic. It appeared to be similar to the global version but while the global one has profiles, group watch, and other features, the SEA version did not. Only in the last couple of months did we get additional profiles other than Kids mode and a revamped interface to match the global version. We still don’t have group watch or IMAX mode.

It is what it is and Disney must have crunched the numbers to be confident that despite the backlash, the new pricing plan will work out for them financially and they’ll have enough subscribers left to justify the hike.

When I was a kid in #Indonesia, we did take-out by bringing empty, clean stainless-steel tiffin carriers to the restaurant. They would scoop the meals into our carriers, and we would take them home. Some vendors had a system where you took home their carriers, cleaned them out, and returned them for reuse.

I don’t think a similar system can exist in the litigious culture of the US (whose fault would it be if you got food poisoning?), but I dream of having washable, reusable containers made of something that will degrade into harmless *rust* when discarded, instead of toxic chemicals.

Three stacks of stackable stainless-steel containers, held together by a carrying handle.
