Great observations by @skinnylatte on the differences between the Indonesian and Malay languages and even more down the thread.
These differences seem minor to outside observers but the pronunciations, accents, and overall word usage make them incompatible enough that a Malay speaker and an Indonesian speaker may struggle to make themselves understood by the other unless they use the formal form of the languages or resort to English.

Backtracking to Semarang City 🚐 with no credit cards & little cash
From Jepara we took a minibus back to Semarang city to try to rescue our vacation from disaster. We had just one more roll of the dice...
TransJakarta CEO claims the organization will maintain the privacy of customer data collected through its Accounts Based Ticketing system which links an individual’s government identity number with their bus passes that record their journey across the Jakarta bus network.
When even the National Data Center can get breached, why should we trust anyone else in this country claiming to keep our data safe? Not to mention this is large scale public tracking and surveillance
TransJakarta wants to profile each and every passenger on the bus network by linking their government issued identity numbers with their tickets under the guise of targeted subsidy scheme so the haves will not be paying subsidized ticket fares. They also want to know exactly how you travel each day on the network as individuals. If you’re a non Jakarta resident they want to charge you a different fare.
I don’t even know where to begin my outrage https://metro.tempo.co/read/1774854/ada-perbedaan-tarif-transjakarta-bagi-warga-ktp-dki-dan-luar-jakarta-setelah-tiket-berbasis-akun-diberlakukan
I SHOULD STOP GOING TO QUORA FOR FUCK’S SAKE 🤣🤣🤣
So whenever I read someone in the west write a recipe that calls for ‘sambal’ and they mean ‘sambal oelek’, I get very irrationally angry. Sambal should NOT be sour. It should not have only vinegar notes. It should arguably not have vinegar at all!
Here, I got 3 different types of sambal just for lunch. There are different styles. Here are 20 types you can read about: https://whatsnewindonesia.com/ultimate-guide/others/food-and-drink/20-kinds-typical-indonesian-sambal
In 2008 I started spending extensive amounts of time in Indonesia and this post I wrote back then, of being in a small town, brings back all the feels.
I don’t know how I had the energy, but I would basically take a boat to Batam then fly to Jakarta from there, so that I could save 20 bucks.
I’m glad I did that shit. My lower back hurts just thinking about that now
So because I have visible tattoos and I speak the equivalent of a 10 year old’s Indonesian, and all my friends here are Chinese Surabayans, people basically read me as ‘dumb ass local kid who went to Singapore or the US to study and now can’t speak properly’, but maybe that’s better than being coded as a foreigner
I’m not sure everyone knows this but Indonesian cities have a lot of hipsters. Indonesian hipsters are a thing. Like, I’m going to a small Indonesian city and there is a third wave coffee spot named after a film stock (Ektar) that posts film photos for most of their Instagram updates, AND has a record player and vinyl nights. Also hijabi hipsters!
Also, Indonesian ‘third wave coffee’ is amazing and is, I do not exaggerate, better than anything I know of in San Francisco
Another film / airport update: Changi Airport terminal 4 scans bags immediately after immigration (other terminals sometimes defer that to at the boarding gate). Spoke with an officer, he said they were happy to hand check but I was in line specifically at one of the lower powered film safe scanners (had a huge sign that said film safe on it), so I just went ahead with the scan. Will share what happens when I develop the film!
Going to Surabaya this weekend to see my best friend of 25 years. The older I get, the more thankful I am for old friends! It also helps if they live in countries with amazing food! My tummy is ready for you, Suroboyo
Incidentally I found this in my scrapbook and sent it to her with ‘we are old’

Indonesia’s first high-speed train wows passengers as it hits 350 kph on trial run
> The Jakarta-Bandung high-speed train, a joint project between #Indonesia and China, will start commercial operations on Oct. 1 after several delays and cost overruns since construction began in 2016.

Indonesia saw an increase in land and forest fires recently as the El Niño weather phenomenon brings a prolonged dry season.
Official data show a fourfold increase in hotspots up to September, compared with the same period last year.

How ‘war on terror’ was fought, won in Southeast Asia – for now
Indonesia is so big that though I spent many years there, I really don’t think I scratched the surface beyond the urban parts of Sumatra, Java, Bali and Lombok. One day when I have months to spare (?!) I want to do a trip there from the Mentawai Islands to eating the Batak food of Sumatra to doing Java from west to east again exploring Teochew food in Pontianak, go diving in Rajah Ampat, visit the Maluku islands for the first time.
It was much easier from Singapore :/
My spoken Indonesian is probably pretty rusty after 5 years away, but I can still read important documents
Basically, the food of East Java Is my absolute fave Indonesian cuisine. I like it almost as much as I love Sumatra food. It’s got more intense and spicier flavors than west / central Javanese food. I prefer food that is ‘gurih dan pedes’, just the way my soul needs it.
New Indonesian industrial park on Borneo, feted as 'green,' will be powered by coal, report says

Inside the life of Indonesia’s remote island nurses | Witness Documentary
I will be in Surabaya next weekend.
Can’t believe it’s been 5, 6 years since I’ve been to Indonesia. I’m looking forward to spending time with one of my oldest friends in the world, eating sate babi, empal goreng, bebek goreng, speaking Indonesian, struggling with Javanese, drinking excellent coffee, and just generally being in a place that feels familiar, comforting, tasty and wonderful. Can’t wait!!!
An Indonesian court has rejected lawsuits filed by two plantation companies operating in the Tanah Merah mega oil palm plantation project in the country’s Papua region.
The ruling means the companies are legally required to stop clearing forest in their concessions and preserve what remains.
After a motorcade mixup, the traveling press pool accompanying Vice President Harris from #Indonesia "ended up traveling on a support plane, which landed at a very rainy Yokota Air Base at 2:41 AM local time," according to pooler Josh Rogin. "Pool has now moved to AF2, which landed at Yokota at 2:30 AM local time. AF2 is wheels up to Alaska refueling stop at 3:52 AM local time."
Candidates running in Indonesia’s presidential election next year must make clear their plans for transition the country away from fossil fuels and toward clean energy, policy experts say.
A survey shows young Indonesians, who make up the majority of potential voters, view environmental issues in general, and a just energy transition in particular, as crucial issues for a new president to tackle.
Officials with VP Harris insisted to Indonesian officials that Widakusware be allowed in to further events as the designated pool reporter, telling them Harris would not enter the room without the journalists who had traveled with her from Washington. At one point the US Ambassador to #Indonesia, Sung Kim, was called in to negotiate.
“Southeast Asia could see the return of transboundary haze later this year, as #Indonesia battles an increased number of wildfires amid a prolonged dry season, said observers.
The dry weather, exacerbated by the El Nino weather pattern which brings lower rainfall, is intensifying across the country and is expected to peak this month, mostly over Sumatra.

Looks like I’m going to be able to carve out time to go to Surabaya over a weekend soon. The food and coffee there is amazing, and I’ll get to spend time with my oldest friend in the world (someone I’ve known since I was 12). I haven’t been to Indonesia since 2018 (since I left for San Francisco) and that feels kind of weird.
Maybe what I miss most about Singapore is being able to go elsewhere
Here’s Patsy’s preview of the #Indonesia trip: https://www.voanews.com/a/key-challenges-await-harris-at-asean-summit-in-jakarta/7249730.html
Disney is raising its Disney+ Hotstar subscription price in Indonesia from Rp199k a year to 799k starting next month and will call it the Premium plan. Monthly subs go up from 39k to 119k. Disney also introduced a lower cost “Basic” plan at 450k/annum or 65k/month. The difference? Picture quality, device logins, and concurrent screens. I heard they’re also raising prices in Malaysia and Thailand.
The service launched three years ago in Indonesia with the shockingly low price of, which in USD was (and still is), US$13 a year. At the time that was almost two months worth of subs in the US.
The current pricing plan is, honestly speaking, far too low to be sustainable. It really feels like introductory and we’ve been extremely lucky to have had it beyond the first year so I can understand why they felt the need to hike the price.
The monthly sub for Premium is much higher than Lionsgate, Catchplay, Prime, HBO GO, or Viu but comparable to Netflix’s standard plan, though Netflix has no annual plan which makes it more expensive over a year.
The way they went about announcing it could have been handled better, though. I wish they outright said at the beginning that it was introductory pricing so that when they announce the real cost there wouldn’t have been so much consumer backlash.
The up to 4x hike is quite a shock to consumers. Initially the app was very basic. It appeared to be similar to the global version but while the global one has profiles, group watch, and other features, the SEA version did not. Only in the last couple of months did we get additional profiles other than Kids mode and a revamped interface to match the global version. We still don’t have group watch or IMAX mode.
It is what it is and Disney must have crunched the numbers to be confident that despite the backlash, the new pricing plan will work out for them financially and they’ll have enough subscribers left to justify the hike.
When I was a kid in #Indonesia, we did take-out by bringing empty, clean stainless-steel tiffin carriers to the restaurant. They would scoop the meals into our carriers, and we would take them home. Some vendors had a system where you took home their carriers, cleaned them out, and returned them for reuse.
I don’t think a similar system can exist in the litigious culture of the US (whose fault would it be if you got food poisoning?), but I dream of having washable, reusable containers made of something that will degrade into harmless *rust* when discarded, instead of toxic chemicals.
