There is no #BenevolentDictator in a system that works well. Instead, we have well-informed users who understand that as a #sysadmin, my job is to balance #security, usability and stability to the best of my ability, for their benefit.

Stability is measured by 'whatever worked yesterday continues to work today'. Usability means that the systems support doing what the users need and want them to do. And security means certainty that the information that they don't want to share is not, and the information that they want to share to a few people only goes to them.

Every user has their own priorities for each of these things. Tradeoffs and costs are inevitable; some of these are influenced by #infrastructure choices and history. But it's not a dictatorship, benevolent or otherwise: I inform my users of what is happening, what is planned and what is likely to occur. They inform me of their needs and desires related to the systems. They trust my general approach but sometimes question specific plans -- that's the relationship of professionals.

I think the painted bike lanes are being interpreted by drivers as a wider road for cars, so they go even faster. Nothing kills so effectively as speed.

Bottom line, most people don't feel safe taking a bike on them, so they are a poor way to promote active transport.

The approach to a small municipal airport stretches across a friend's neighborhood. Can you name any examples of bike or pedestrian infrastructure that could have been designed really badly, but someone involved in the process fixed it because they had experience as a cyclist/pedestrian?

Of course #geographical, #political and #social circumstances are in part responsible, but a good #infrastructure to #warn people beforehand is likely the largest contributor. This is underlined by the heavy rain in #Germany in 2021 that killed 188 people with 90l/sqm.
To be prepared for the massive #natural #disasters that are heading out way due to the climate #crisis tools like #CellBroadcast and #Sirens are absolutely necessary to save lives.
Additionally we should strive to reduce #Co2 and save the #climate at any cost. It will still be cheaper than the alternative if we don't.

You might have thought that while it was quite common that #water #infrastructure might suffer from leaks, but to be honest I was under the impression that the #gas infrastructure might be better maintained (for obvious reasons).... how wrong I was - a massive leak of #mehtane from a Wales & West utilities pipeline was spotted from space.

The country really is fall apart!

Bad solarpunk me, but true child of the western US, I like to drive. And I don’t mean to the grocery store, but to beautiful places, especially ones I’ve never been to before. What could be better than the freedom of the open road and all the wonders my car can take me to see? Yet, having lived nearly half my life now in Europe, I've spent a lot of time on buses, streetcars, and subways, and know the joy of travel by train.

Bellingen - Roads to nowhere, Pt.1/2

Scenic Bellingen has been in a road widening frenzy to accommodate industrial logging and clear felling operations to 'get the stuff out of here'. For nearly a year heavy fossil fuel machinery has been making the roads (Roses Road, Gleniffer Road, North Bank Road) fit for an extractivist industry, ignoring residents and biodiverse habitats along the cemented arteries.

In town gigantic haulage trucks (2 B-double trucks) shoot through the bottleneck of the main cafe and shopping district ruining the ambience.

The government, road building and timber extraction nexus robs residents of their homes, eradicates biodiversity habitats and pumps up emissions for all.

Wildlife, residents and tourists are now confronted with a dangerous network of roads where they risk their lives and endure permanent pollution.

To prioritise damaging industries and provide pathways only for them is putting the community at risk.

People want a sustainable environment, they would like to move about in safety without carbon emissions.

Where is the infrastructure for the future?

The cycle lanes through Manchester's Curry Mile don't quite meet the latest standards and suffer from pedestrian overspill in the evenings. But cycling along here is a world better than it was before they went in, when you took your life in your hands with every trip.

Not perfect, but good enough to have made a huge difference to safety and got a lot more people cycling along here.
