I’m holding my sketchbook in my left hand up next to a final painting in watercolor. The sketchbook is open to the page of a sketch of a clock face with a tiny, female figure, perched in between the minutes hand, and the hours hand. It’s a very sketchy little rough ink drawing. Basically a concept sketch that I did for the 2018 Inktober word prompt on October 14, “Clock”. The final painting has the same image but done in watercolour and much larger. So it is interesting to see the original concept sketch from five years ago to the painting that I’ve just completed in the last few weeks. The original ink sketch is about 3 or 4 inches in diameter the final painting is about 21 in.² and it is in full colour with gold leaf around the rim of the clock!

Accroché à son immense cape bleue, les 2 volent à travers la seine, poursuivies par les nains qui essayent d'attraper le chien sous les regards médusés du bourreau et de la licorne et dans l'hilarité de la petite sorcière et de son ombre démoniaque toujours enchaînés.

The last few years, my wife and I have done something every day for the month of October-- art challenges, projects, etc (the same way some people do 'Inktober').

I recently posted some of the Simpsons art we did every day in October *this* year.

Last year, we did a podcast called Podcast of Horror and recorded an episode every day in October, talking about Simpsons Halloween episodes. We managed to cover EVERY Simpsons Halloween thing released up to last year -- even specials like Halloween of Horror and Thanksgiving of Horror. The other day, we just made one more new episode to cover the new Treehouse of Horror XXXIV from this year (and we'll continue to do it every year as long as there's new ones!)

I guess this all started because I've had a cartoon blog (https://animatedtvblog.wordpress.com) forever, and the podcast is based on that. I still write about cartoons and watch them a lot. We might talk about more cartoons eventually on a podcast of some kind.

I was also planning some future stuff on Twitch - doing full vintage episode streams like https://twitch.tv/dailysimpsons does once a week.

Maybe eventually.

Thoughts on Inktober 2023

- use 'Drawtober' next time?
- Using ink wash's is a lot of bang-for-your-buck, but use a pen that won't bleed.
- If it's a story, do it more like a storybook and less like a comic. Less work.
- Be prepared to adjust the story to make sense as you go, since it's hard to plan ahead.
- The art is pretty rough, but I feel it was good to finish something.
- The most satire I have done, which is not much.
- Doing them in batches is OK.
