I've managed to rewrite the first Twine bit of my game. Previously 13 passages and 1,229 words and not great at introducing everything that needed to be. Now 30 passages and 4,494 words and it gets in much deeper. I can't tell if I've swung too hard the other way, but oh well.

Sto leggendolo 📖 , devo dire simpatico e per ora mi piace, solo un pò troppo schematico, vediamo come prosegue... 🤔

Continuing the summer camp theme with #StorytimeWithSteve, this week we're reading "It Happened at Camp Pine Tree" - a #ChooseYourOwnNightmare, the 'scary' 18-book #CYOA spinoff from 1995-7 designed to compete with the more popular 42-book #GiveYourselfGoosebumps series (1995-2000).

Fav camp counselor goes missing. Murdered by ghost, eaten by snakes, disintegrated by toxic waste? Only 6 endings - great setting, poor #gamebook.

If you're into writing games with #Twine, consider giving @randomColorContrasts a follow. It's always good to step away from Twine's default white-text-on-black style, and being able to see some random alternatives is a great help for that. #InteractiveFiction #gamedev

And my #InteractiveFiction #retro #8bit #16bit game is "Tristam Island"

The obvious conclusion is

Part of my strategy to make my #cento (an #Experimental #InteractiveFiction game made from other games) is to look at tropes. If nobody made a submarine game, I can't pilfer sentences about submarines...

Fortunately these old chestnuts are well-known - lots of discussions in the community about them! Medieval games, "my crappy apartment" games, "my quirky uncle's abandoned residence" games, "my university" games... And caves, lots of them!

Which will show up in the end? You'll see! 🙂

Taking a slight detour in my play through old #interactiveFiction games. Still have #KnightOrc lined up to play properly soon. But tonight it's time to go back to the 2001 #IFComp winning game All Roads. Set in magical #Venice, which I have to admit is a draw for me. I do remember enjoying this game a lot back in 2001. #parser #textAdventure #IndieGames

Screen shot of All Roads playing in the Lectrote interpreter on a Mac. The text on screen says "Scaffold in the City Square. Your head is pulled back, held by the rope pressing on your throat. Your toes pivot on a rickety stool, which shakes as your legs shake. The crowd filling the square are chattering like monkeys, but they are just flits of colour in the corners of your eyes. You cannot look round - instead you gaze straight across the Square, to the great dial of the Clock."

I'm going to go all in on two playable characters next time.

Back when Spring Thing was still going on, I got together with Callie Smith, who did the illustrations for Repeat the Ending, to discuss our collaboration. The video content is limited to the images, so it's more like a podcast than anything else.

okay. writing a short or long story first before coding your #InteractiveFiction is a much easier process. as a professional software engineer, i should have thought about building a "spec doc" first (in this case, a work of fiction writing). i just churned out small part of the first act in a few minutes time. there's still more to do for even the first act with all the scenes and rooms and such.

Overview:
You are playing as chronically ill person with slight shortsightedness, who has experienced mental health difficulties in the past. You are trying to find a way to connect with the outside world, while staying safe at the same time.
The game's protagonist, @CautiousCauliflower, is loosely based on the author of the game (me:)).

hard to believe i started writing my first #InteractiveFiction this time last year and it was not popular. however, this hasn't phased me. i made it mostly for me and to learn the art form. it's written in #Inform7 and is very, very ugly. one year later and several ones written, mostly unreleased, and after watching countless narrascope and movie script writing videos, i think i have a formula down. we'll see if Buttered Toast 5: Billy Davis Island Adventure will be worth the extra effort. i suspect that it will be!

I'm currently playing #Level9 #interactiveFiction #textAdventure game Knight Orc from 1987. Which feels almost like a #MUD with many autonomous NPCs running around, fighting and grabbing treasure! And has some very unusual command shortcuts, as shown in the image of part of the manual. A very intriguing game. Which can get into unwinnable states, like Melbourne House's The Hobbit. But I am very much enjoying it. Will write up more thoughts after. #80sGames #ComputerGames #RetroGaming #British

Some of the command shortcuts, e.g. FOLLOW <person>, GO TO <place> (which works out the sequence of moves needed), RUN TO <place> (like GO TO but faster), and FIND <object> to go to a place with a specific object.

Repeat : Return : Revise is an #interactiveFiction game made in #godotEngine using @inklestudios's Ink markup language. I spent a week figuring out how to use the plug-in because I don't know how to code in C#, and also managed to get the story written.

Art? Sounds? Proofreading? Who has time for that? Not this guy, I aim to make a game every week. This one was about time loops!

Download it and give it a try. https://mcoorlim.itch.io/repeat-return-reprise #devLog

Title screen for Repeat Return Reprise. It's very sparse.

"Repeat the Ending" is the "critical edition" of a forgotten 1996 Inform 5 game about loss, mental illness, and the second law of thermodynamics. It won a "best in show" ribbon in the 2023 Spring Thing festival.

A post-festival release of the game, along with several digital feelies, is now available. Everything is linked at IFDB, which also has a "play online" feature.

One thing that strikes me as deeply weird about #InteractiveFiction is that parser-based IF tends to be 2nd-person narratives ("You are standing in front of a house"), while non-parser IF tends to be 3rd-person ("Guybrush: I can't reach it").

And this feels weirder somehow than the difference between 1p and 3p shooters. Not sure why.

Cover of the zine. The title says "Hide and Seek" and it's signed by "The Prince". It's a digital illustration of a boy holding some keys. The kid is dressed formally, and his clothes are being fused with a labyrinth. There's a demon or shadow behind the kid, and he's wearing a weird bunny mask that seems to be smiling maliciously. In the background, there's theater curtains and something that looks like fangs.

I'll be going for something relatively bare-bones in presentation, but if I get a good feel for it will be able to integrate Ink into future game projects as well.
