I've managed to rewrite the first Twine bit of my game. Previously 13 passages and 1,229 words and not great at introducing everything that needed to be. Now 30 passages and 4,494 words and it gets in much deeper. I can't tell if I've swung too hard the other way, but oh well.
Sto leggendolo 📖 , devo dire simpatico e per ora mi piace, solo un pò troppo schematico, vediamo come prosegue... 🤔

Continuing the summer camp theme with #StorytimeWithSteve, this week we're reading "It Happened at Camp Pine Tree" - a #ChooseYourOwnNightmare, the 'scary' 18-book #CYOA spinoff from 1995-7 designed to compete with the more popular 42-book #GiveYourselfGoosebumps series (1995-2000).
Fav camp counselor goes missing. Murdered by ghost, eaten by snakes, disintegrated by toxic waste? Only 6 endings - great setting, poor #gamebook.
Gosh, there’s an open source #HyperCard clone called #Decker. There’s more info, plus links to examples of projects using it, at the intfiction forum. Decker outputs HTML that can be viewed in any #browser. https://intfiction.org/t/decker-an-open-source-apple-hypercard-clone-perfect-for-if/60473 #InteractiveFiction #RetroComputing #HyperMedia #BranchingNarrative #GUI #Apple #Mac #Macintosh #Hypertext
May 2023 Update!
This month's release includes more for Sascha, the feline parkour enthusiast, Doran, the dragon in the dry Plains, and a three-year-overdue continuation of Lux & Umbra, as well as new artwork, other content updates, and bug-fixes.
The latest version of Flexible Survival can be downloaded from the official website and it is free. Come and hug a wolf today!
If you're into writing games with #Twine, consider giving @randomColorContrasts a follow. It's always good to step away from Twine's default white-text-on-black style, and being able to see some random alternatives is a great help for that. #InteractiveFiction #gamedev
This is silly but let's do it:
Since Diablo IV is out
And Diablo I's hub is "Tristram"
And my #InteractiveFiction #retro #8bit #16bit game is "Tristam Island"
The obvious conclusion is
My game is now on sale
I have a fair amount of experience with two of the most popular interactive fiction authoring systems: Inform and Twine. If you're struggling to grok one of these, I'll be happy to help.
#InteractiveFiction #Inform #Twine #IntroComp
Part of my strategy to make my #cento (an #Experimental #InteractiveFiction game made from other games) is to look at tropes. If nobody made a submarine game, I can't pilfer sentences about submarines...
Fortunately these old chestnuts are well-known - lots of discussions in the community about them! Medieval games, "my crappy apartment" games, "my quirky uncle's abandoned residence" games, "my university" games... And caves, lots of them!
Which will show up in the end? You'll see! 🙂
Just wrote up my thoughts on replaying All Roads (2001) by Jon Ingold https://intfiction.org/t/viv-plays-through-past-if-games/62211/10 #interactiveFiction #parser #textAdventure #IndieGames #Venice #IFComp #creativeWriting
Taking a slight detour in my play through old #interactiveFiction games. Still have #KnightOrc lined up to play properly soon. But tonight it's time to go back to the 2001 #IFComp winning game All Roads. Set in magical #Venice, which I have to admit is a draw for me. I do remember enjoying this game a lot back in 2001. #parser #textAdventure #IndieGames
I'm going to go all in on two playable characters next time.
Back when Spring Thing was still going on, I got together with Callie Smith, who did the illustrations for Repeat the Ending, to discuss our collaboration. The video content is limited to the images, so it's more like a podcast than anything else.
If you're curious about Callie's great art or how we worked together, you might enjoy this conversation.
LOTS AND LOTS OF SPOILERS!
https://artificers.dev/blogging/year-two/ is a blog entry on my reflections of the first year of my #InteractiveFiction group that I formed
The fairly short #InteractiveFiction Buttered Toast, the Billy Davis Island Adventure can be found at https://artificers.dev/if/butteredtoast5/
and so getting up early has paid off... short #InteractiveFiction is done
"Oh! Well, with that all I have to say is: SPLORK XYZZY!"
A bright red light surrounds Billy Davis and he disappears in a red flame.
I feel this is peak United States here. #InteractiveFiction
okay. writing a short or long story first before coding your #InteractiveFiction is a much easier process. as a professional software engineer, i should have thought about building a "spec doc" first (in this case, a work of fiction writing). i just churned out small part of the first act in a few minutes time. there's still more to do for even the first act with all the scenes and rooms and such.
With the unofficial start of summer, this week for #StorytimeWithSteve I'm reading "Summer Camp" - a 1984 #ChooseYourOwnAdventure for younger readers by Judy Gitenstein.
My coworkers & I enjoyed the many adventures for such a short book: archery, softball, hermit hunts, scaring friends, adventure trips, and 2 months away from our parents!

In case you missed it? (Probably not.) Interview with Peter Nepstad, author of 1893: A World’s Fair Mystery, on the Stay Forever #retrogaming podcast. #InteractiveFiction

In today's post, I summarize the narrative and thematic features of the Zork trilogy. My goal, ultimately, is to show how the Enchanter series mirrors these games in important and interesting ways.

So I made a visual novel in Renpy. It is the first time I created a game, any feedback is more than welcome.
You are playing as chronically ill person with slight shortsightedness, who has experienced mental health difficulties in the past. You are trying to find a way to connect with the outside world, while staying safe at the same time.
The game's protagonist, @CautiousCauliflower, is loosely based on the author of the game (me:)).
Content warning: The protagonist exhibits some patterns of thinking that might be a little bit too familiar to people with anxiety disorders or trauma.

I am working on an #Experimental #InteractiveFiction game where the concept is that every single sentence in the game is taken from another game!
This actually has a name and is an ancient artform: it's called a #cento !
Le prochain concours se prépare en ce moment et notre organisateur @ju vient de révéler un gros morceau : le thème du #ConFI24 !
hard to believe i started writing my first #InteractiveFiction this time last year and it was not popular. however, this hasn't phased me. i made it mostly for me and to learn the art form. it's written in #Inform7 and is very, very ugly. one year later and several ones written, mostly unreleased, and after watching countless narrascope and movie script writing videos, i think i have a formula down. we'll see if Buttered Toast 5: Billy Davis Island Adventure will be worth the extra effort. i suspect that it will be!
Really interesting writeup about learning #Inform7 (the #textAdventure #programming language I use), from one of this year's Best In Show winners from the #SpringThing #interactiveFiction competition. https://golmac.org/about-the-time-i-wrote-an-inform-7-game/ #GameDev #IndieGames #CreativeWriting
Can you help #IndianaJones find the long-lost treasure of Sheba? Doing my part this week reading this 1984 #gamebook with coworkers during #StorytimeWithSteve. There are 11 Indy adventures in this #FindYourFate series - some go for quite a lot of money on the resale market.
It's better than Crystal Skull.

I'm currently playing #Level9 #interactiveFiction #textAdventure game Knight Orc from 1987. Which feels almost like a #MUD with many autonomous NPCs running around, fighting and grabbing treasure! And has some very unusual command shortcuts, as shown in the image of part of the manual. A very intriguing game. Which can get into unwinnable states, like Melbourne House's The Hobbit. But I am very much enjoying it. Will write up more thoughts after. #80sGames #ComputerGames #RetroGaming #British
Another Bitsy game from me! This time you play as a delivery drone in a ruined city. It takes place in the same world as Grow Light, with a little cameo, but can be played on its own. Music by @LaurentD_S on Twitter.

nice, someone built a device for #interactivefiction ;)
Repeat : Return : Revise is an #interactiveFiction game made in #godotEngine using @inklestudios's Ink markup language. I spent a week figuring out how to use the plug-in because I don't know how to code in C#, and also managed to get the story written.
Art? Sounds? Proofreading? Who has time for that? Not this guy, I aim to make a game every week. This one was about time loops!
Download it and give it a try. https://mcoorlim.itch.io/repeat-return-reprise #devLog
"Repeat the Ending" is the "critical edition" of a forgotten 1996 Inform 5 game about loss, mental illness, and the second law of thermodynamics. It won a "best in show" ribbon in the 2023 Spring Thing festival.
A post-festival release of the game, along with several digital feelies, is now available. Everything is linked at IFDB, which also has a "play online" feature.
Thanks for your interest!
The BlueSuburbia demo is live!
An early demo that introduces you to the world.

Welcome! We’re very happy to announce the preliminary launch of The Rosebush, a new online magazine for interactive fiction theory and criticism. The purpose of this preliminary launch is to let the #InteractiveFiction community know that we exist, and to invite submissions. We hope to begin publishing early this summer.
Find out more at our website: https://the-rosebush.com/
My Inform 7 game, Repeat the Ending, received a Best in Show in this year’s Spring Thing. Wild! When I upload the post-festival release in a day or two, I’ll post a link.

Today is the last day to nominate ribbons for the Spring Thing Festival of Interactive Fiction.
There's still time to play/nominate some games!
One thing that strikes me as deeply weird about #InteractiveFiction is that parser-based IF tends to be 2nd-person narratives ("You are standing in front of a house"), while non-parser IF tends to be 3rd-person ("Guybrush: I can't reach it").
And this feels weirder somehow than the difference between 1p and 3p shooters. Not sure why.
My decades-long friend and colleague Zarf (@zarfeblong), with whom I have co-founded many projects in the world of #InteractiveFiction and digital games, just got laid off.
This means that you have the opportunity to hire one of the most creative, empathetic, diligent, and wide-ranging minds in the field of software-driven narrative.
It's important to me that you consider the possibilities that this opens up for your game studio. #Fedihire

I've been looking into #ink interpreters for Godot 4 so this week's #gameDev project is going to be a choice-based text adventure. Today I'll be brainstorming, tomorrow I'll build a framework/interpreter, and the rest of the week will be writing the game.
I'll be going for something relatively bare-bones in presentation, but if I get a good feel for it will be able to integrate Ink into future game projects as well.
April 2023 Update!

I'm very, VERY happy to announce that I am the recipient of an artistic grant from the #Canada Council for the Arts - and yes, this will be for an experimental parser game!
The idea has been simmering since 2015 (yes! that long!) so I'm extremely excited to get working on it!
More info soon, I will try to post regularly about it 🙂

Hello! I've made my very first game. It's a short game about a botanist banished to the moon for attempting to create sentient plant life, crafted in Bitsy.
Thanks and enjoy!

:abunhdowohop: ’ello! I’m Anjune. I’ve been here since 2017. Here’s a bullet-pointy #introduction, spring 2023 edition:
Timidly trying my hand at some atmospheric #electroindustrial with #Renoise among other neat tools and toys
· #Prose-#poetry perpetrator, albeit rarely
· Compulsive #language pedant who should know better
· Escaping into fantasy, faerie, SciFi and RPG lore & art
· Learned English from pen friends, #TextAdventures & #InteractiveFiction, song lyrics, the #DemoScene, & the internet. Accordingly old and decrepit!
· Things I currently want to learn but struggle to make myself: music theory, baking, embroidery, audio production, balcony gardening, LÖVE2D and/or libtcod
· Part-time-vegan vegetarian
· A #SocialLibertarian? Not too chummy with ideologies, and never ever sure I’m right
· At best #homoflexible & #demisexual; #pancuddly; favouring #polyamory & romantic #PowerExchange… but really, I’d just like some hugs again sometime
A new server merits a new #introductions post.
