#InvisibleDisabilities
@njeanneburns I have emotional trauma from being criticized and rejected my entire childhood for undiagnosed disabilities that had understandably left me sensitive to criticism and rejection. I don't think it's a disorder, I think it's a perfectly natural reaction to abuse.
I cope by considering the source of the comments & whether that source is worth my respect & regard.
Most of the time, it's not.
@Konaburd I'm really sorry this happened to you. From what I've read, the #Alt4me tag is for anyone having a challenging time writing the alt text for a photo *especially* for people who have disabilities that make writing alt-txt more challenging, like you. This would include dyslexia, rejection sensitivity, some people with #ADHD #autism many #invisibledisabilities
Also, #spoonies is a disability community, too, even though "don't have the spoons" has been adopted by non-disabled busy ppl.

Because of my lack of sleep on Friday night, I am experiencing substantial brain fog today. I’m having a difficult time thinking, and my brain feels like a heavy dead weight inside my skull. My eyes are heavy and don’t want to stay open, although I am not sleepy. It feels like migraine postdrone. I have a writing workshop within the hour, and a reading and Q&A at 5. How am I to function? Argh. I am lucky that my writing is smarter than the rest of me right now. I’m feeling awfully nonverbal. #BrainFog #Exhaustion #Migraine #WritingCommunity #InvisibleDisabilities

https://www.psychiatrieenfilosofie.nl/too-mad-to-be-true-ii
The second Too Mad To Be True conference that was dedicated to exploring the various links between philosophy and madness. The atmosphere was vibrant and it initiated new ways of thinking and communicating around issues of madness and philosophy. The central theme was both relevant to philosophical and mad theories and practices: ' The promises and perils of the first-person perspective'. The conference was hybrid: both in person, in Ghent, Belgium, as well as online.

When we got back to City Hall and it was time to eat, I filled a plate from the sumptuous buffet and went outside to eat by myself. I didn’t feel safe eating inside with a big international crew when there are COVID outbreaks all over the region. When I was through eating, I went back inside, but there were no seats left. I stood off to the side as my back hurt more and more and more from standing on concrete. I wondered how weird it would be if I sat down on the floor. I would have, if I didn’t think people might trip over me. I can’t handle standing still for long. It gives me significant pain. I either have to sit down or keep moving. #ActuallyAutistic #InvisibleDisabilities

I feel like I’m finally back to normal. I managed to train at the gym every day this week, and my muscles are strong again. My guts are operating the way they should, and my toothache has receded to manageable levels of pain. I wrote a flash fiction, a new chapter for my manuscript, and I did housework. I sure wish I could be this way every week, but my disabilities crop up randomly and grind me to a halt. All I can do is maximize these good days. #spoony #ChronicPainWarrior #ChronicPain #InvisibleDisabilities #FitAfter50
I thought maybe I’d be back to normal after a couple of weeks of nope, but I had to spend all day in bed again after the gym this morning. At least the gym didn’t feel impossible today like it did last week. I’m a hardcore spoony lately, and I have so much work I’m lagging on because of it. #spoonie #SpoonieLife #ChronicPain #ChronicIllness #InvisibleDisabilities

"With Gentle Affect - Surviving Trauma"
Written with gentle affect and love for all:
Words can be a powerful thing. Sometimes we may say something unintentionally that can open the wounds of another. The range of emotion conjured, may sometimes be manifest in response. Sometimes it's an acquired instinct.
In a world that has become so full of hate, there are many that have survived great trauma. Words that may seem innocent, can be like thrusting the sharpest of double-edged swords, slashing open the heart's healing scars. Sometimes, if one pokes the hive, the bee is likely to sting out of instinctual self-preservation. It's important to be mindful of others we encounter. Only they may know the shadows that haunt within them.
Being an advocate is not an easy task. You're basically telling people what they may do is not right but, without advocacy, where does #change lie? Taking the brunt and standing firm for others that may not have the strength? If one day it may help to prevent others with invisible disabilities from being subjected, how can I remain silent.
With that said, the last time I checked, I'm human too. I have a brain, a heart and everything. I also don't harbor bitterness or resentment... It messes up the atmosphere inside.[]
"If one breaks one's leg, they may have trouble walking, patience and understanding is key. The same is true for the brain.
Today's installment was going to be about the brain and spelling. There's link to an interesting article below. I always welcome kind correction and thoughtful constructive feedback.

I have a medical procedure coming up and had to answer a questionnaire. Among other things, I was asked if I have problems with “blenching”. I looked that word up, but can find no definition. There was also no way for me to request feedback, so I’m left wondering if they meant belching, blanching, or something else altogether. Ugh. Also, I was asked if I experience headaches, gut issues, congestion, coughing, etc. The answer is yes. Those are all part of a normal day for me. Oh, the joys of having chronic health issues which match up with COVID symptoms. Just to be sure, I tested myself, and came up negative. #ChronicHealthIssues #ChronicPain #RespiratoryDisease #IBS #Migraine #PostnasalDrip #InvisibleDisabilities #MaskUp #Proofreading

I wanted to do to a two-spirit powwow today, but the air is poison so I didn’t. And now I have a bad toothache. I may need to get a tooth pulled. Why does this happen on a long weekend right before I go on a trip to see my parents in PEI? Argh. My sister and her kids are coming to visit tomorrow, and I’m afraid I’ll be in too much pain to enjoy the visit. My teeth are a disaster, but I’ve only had to have two fillings this year. A few years ago, I needed 13 in one year. #ChronicPain #InvisibleDisabilities #RespiratoryDisease

The air is mildly poisonous today, but it’s not super hot, so I will attempt going to the gym in my mask. I feel miserable doing physical training while wearing a mask, but the training is good for my muscles and bones. Still, I’m not looking forward to this. #ClimateDiary #RespiratoryDisease #InvisibleDisabilities #CanadaWildfires #MaskUp #FitAfter50
The gym was extra spicy today. I’ve still got DOMS from pullup day on Monday, from ~30km of walking over the past three days, and two hours of kayaking yesterday. Today I worked on single-legged Romanian deadlifts and heavy Prowler pushes. I’m glad I’m strong right now. I take advantage of the times when my body is powerful and functional. Those times vanquish on me periodically and with no warning. #InvisibleDisabilities #ChronicPain #FitAfter50 #StrengthTraining #DOMS

My performance at Tribally Yours in 2007. I was in the midst of a terrible asthma attack throughout this performance, and no one had a clue because the show must go on. I was barely breathing the entire time. When I got off stage, I basically collapsed. The smoke machine at the venue is what triggered it. It took me over a month to recover, and the people I was traveling with thought I was faking being sick. #InvisibleDisabilities #RespiratoryDisease #Asthma #Dance #Dancer #Poi #Floorwork #BellyDance #AndroidLust

It takes an average of *15 YEARS* for people with Ehlers-Danlos to get a diagnosis once they start seeing doctors for symptoms. I had a rheumatologist tell me it wasn't even worth getting a diagnosis because there was no cure. He of course was ignoring the seven years that I'd been on a wild goose chase of specialists trying to find anyone who could tell me what the hell was wrong so I could stop trying things that wouldn't work.
I am sure I've spent thousands of dollars over the years on insurance, copays, medication, home goods, and missed work.
Something I've experienced over and over again is that most doctors are not trained to troubleshoot. They are trained to recognize symptoms. If your symptoms don't line up, they give a shrug ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ and maybe refer to you another specialist. I wish I could get a sysadmin to be my primary care doctor. I think they would get results.
"I was extremely anxious, wondering if this doctor would gaslight me, tell me I needed to lose another 60 lbs or tell me that I should consider myself lucky that I’m not a paraplegic and at least I can feel pain."
https://www.ehlers-danlos.com/story/katie-c/
This story resonates with me as I seek out a diagnosis for what I suspect is hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome. I've spent 20 years of my 36 total being absolutely exhausted every day. I never wake up feeling refreshed. It used to be I could blame it on myself, staying up too late, "being a night owl", etc. But esp. after college it became very evident that nothing I did had any impact. Regular hours, sleep hygiene, exercise, sleeping pills, melatonin, new bed and bedding, lowering stress, meditation - not one thing has changed how physically tired I am all the time.

Been thinking it's time to update my pinned bio post, so here goes:

I don't think it is done on purpose or with ill intent.
Disability activism is so used to the government finding the minimum solution that saves them the most money, that the common talking points are all about not giving any opening for people not to be included.
Regardless of work, education, transport or place in society, the focus is always on equal access and equal treatment.
Which is right! Disability should -never- be a reason to be kept out of something you want to do.
But there has to be a way to advocate for equal rights and space and also acknowledge and leave room for those who can't attend and need alternate solutions.
Chronic illness is often on accord with other disability activism, bc we often fight to -not- have to do something.
But there has to be a way to advocate for everyone, even if those needs are contradictory to each other
#ChronicIllness #invisibleDisabilities #Disability @chronicillness @disability
I am sad today.
My work group has been working on our council's response to the "how to reduce social differences" plan for weeks now.
We presented our draft at the meeting last week and ppl were mostly positive to all of it (We were lacking some stuff about mental disability which I knew about and was happy to get more text for).
Today council leader and secretary sends out the final draft and she has fully rewritten the education part, where we tried to both advocate for kids who are left out of schooling bc of inaccessibility and poor prioritizing from the school -and- kids who need alternative options bc being in school is too much.
The text we're left with only advocates for physical disability.
And while I absolutely think the school access for physically disabled kids is awful and needs so much focus, I am sad the council again leaves out invisibly disabled ppl.
This is not the first time my focus on competing access needs has been overruled
Another friend recently told me that they think I’m mysterious.
I hear that a lot.
But this is also me- spilling my guts.
I guess I’m both.
People also tend to think that I’m the same person who I used to be.
There is where the worst part of living with #InvisibleDisabilities is, for me.
I’m an #amnesiac. I don’t remember so much and perceive everything so differently, that I can’t imagine enjoying some of the things I loved.

The series is designed to provide a public venue for discussion with disabled philosophers about a range of topics, including their philosophical work on disability; the place of philosophy of disability vis-à-vis the discipline and profession; their experiences of institutional exclusion and personal and structural gaslighting in philosophy, in particular, and in academia, more generally; resistance to ableism, racism, sexism, and other apparatuses of power; accessibility; and anti-oppressive pedagogy.

Last week we put out an appeal for an interviewee following an approach from Newstalk.
Zita kindly came forward.
She ended up being interviewed as part of a segment on #invisibleillnesses and #Invisibledisabilities .
Her part lasts from 25:35 to 29:12.
She was disappointed she was not given more time but at least she did get a chance to talk a national radio.
Thanks again to her.

This #book changed me! The chapters are standalone stories and as a compilation they critique "the system" psy-complex, mental health, sanity, all the things. I can't say enough about how powerful this text is! Diverse #authors Living all over the globe experiencing insanity or sanity or a combination of the two! #GoodWriting #writers #readers
I have close relationships with a few of the authors but their chapters were a surprise to me!
Because the book is newly-released, some online booksellers don’t have it listed on their sites yet; some sites are quicker than others with such things. But it’s already available on the Amazon and Barnes & Noble sites.
Local brick-and-mortar booksellers can also order it for customers via the Ingram distribution catalogue, and customers whose mailing addresses are in the USA can order it direct from Autonomous Press.

Student with Downs Syndrome Excluded:
A post by @JDS linked an article about an Alabama elementary school girls basketball team that won the championship in a boys league. Despite defeating all the boys teams they faced enroute to the top, the league refused to award the trophy to the girls team. As if this example of “exclusion by bigotry” was not enough to get the juices flowing, the article linked another #disability related story that I couldn’t pass up. So much for easing back into it.
Morgyn Arnold, who lives with down syndrome, worked as the manager of her Junior high school’s cheerleading team. The cheer team at Shoreline Junior High School in Layton, Utah, chose to take two team photos; one with Morgyn and one without. The photo excluding her is the one used on social media and printed in the yearbook. Her name was not even mentioned as part of the team. Despite all of her “hard work and dedication to the team”, she was excluded .
According to a relative of Morgyn's, this “was the second time in three years” that she had “been left out of the yearbook” and had been left off the class list of students by the school in the past. The school issued a statement on social media that was later deleted. Is that the “swooshing" of brooms I hear?
I personally have had a similar taste of this elixir of exclusion during my time broadcasting for one university hockey team. Among the numerous discriminatory and ableist acts I experienced, I too was never mentioned or thanked in anyway by that team. I felt as if I was a dirty secret or that the team that raved about my broadcasts, was ashamed of me.
The big difference? Down Syndrome is not one of my disabilities and I was not 14 years old like Morgyn. Even with my experience, I can’t imagine how she must have felt being subjected to these patronizing, demeaning and deplorable ableist acts of exclusion.
In the mind of the offenders, exclusion, discrimination and bigotry doesn’t have to make sense. Oftentimes, they assume the people living with invisible, developmental or intellectual disabilities to be clueless or lacking reason and intelligence. In actuality, this type of behavior and “stigmatude” suggests that perpetrators may be lacking in some of these areas.
For this blatant act of ableism and oblivion to inclusion, Community Intergration and equality I have no cheers, only jeers.
“HIP HIP! Shame on you.”

"Ridge Home for Mental Defectives"
[⚠️ CW: Historically, the treatment of people with invisible disabilities by institutions, policies and society, has often been inhumane. Examples cited in this piece, though not gory, may be unsettling to some.]
"Ridge Home for Mental Defectives – Are You a Mental Defective?":
Do I belong in a cage because I have invisible disabilities (IDs)? Should I be abused under the guise of “caretaking" that I do not require? Should I be jailed, even if I did not commit a crime, soley because I live with #TBI, am #ActuallyAutistic and have other #InvisibleDisabilities. Do I belong locked away from sunshine and society? Am I mentally incompetent or a “Mental Defective”? That’s exactly what so many others with invisible disabilities were categorized as, and subjected to, in a part of Colorado's dark history.
“The Ridge State Home and Training Center for Mental Defectives ”, and some state laws that still existed in just the last decade, are only two examples of some of the barbaric practices. Some of the articles linked below even demonstrate #stigmatude with use of words like “inmates" and the mental “R" slur. People with downs syndrome are not the “R" word and those with invisible disabilities and mental health chalenges, are not defectictives.
Did you know, if you were having a mental health crisis, that you could be jailed in Colorado if there was no room in medical facilities? That law was recently changed and funding from cannabis tax revenues was redirected for that purpose but, in some places, it still occurs. Colorado law gives officials 28 days to get people with such experience proper treatment and placement but, in some cases people with invisible disabilities spent six months incarcerated without even an evaluation. Is it any wonder that many do not want to ask for help?
So, what about the home for “Mental Defectives ”? My blood boils and I cringe everytime I hear that name… “Mental Defective", as if we are a broken toy or a factory second. We are people with health issues just like someone with cancer or diabetes. What if your loved one was locked away because they had #covid?
In 1909, Colorado chose 310 acres just west of Arvada to establish the “Ridge State Home and Training Center for Mental Defectives”. The wording in the “Golden History” link below refers to residents as “inmates" and cites the first such “inmate” arrived in July, 1912. By 1936, the Ridge Home’s capacity of 300 was already at 260 people with IDs, many of which, were “exiled” and abandoned by their own families.
I will surely expend my generous character limit if I give all of my thoughts, so I will give just a few of the low-lights.
The 1937 newspaper headline in the image below claimed that “Everyone”s Happy at Ridge Home for Mental Defectives". This propaganda is easily refuted by many accounts of actual occurrences at Colorado’s “prison” for people with ID and Mental Illnesses.
Aside from residents being forced to work on the “Ridge farm”, other abuses and atrocities were common. One employee was charged with crimes of abuse against multiple residents after he bragged about his deplorable actions to friends. The only means of release was by transfer to relative’s homes, to the so called “asylum” in Pueblo or death.
In the 1940s, the facility practiced “forced sterilization” of people with invisible disabilities, which some feel was a attempt at a form of genocide.
In the 50s, stories of underfunding, overcrowding and abuse began to surface. One administrator was quoted in a news article saying that many held captive in “Ridge” were “much too competent” to be in the home but, laws and family abandonment kept them there.
In the 1970s, fire safety issues, cracked walls and foundation caused part of the facility to be closed by order of the state. There were no proper fire exit routes, and not even a single fire escape. In the 80s reports of neglect allegedly due to funding and staffing problems came to light.
As recently as the 1980s, “time outs” for those with behavioral issues resulted in some being put in cages. One report cites a child was caged for nine month with only a bucket and a mattress. Others were said to be packed in wet sheets and ice for acting up. Does that sound like treatment that will improve mental health, or torture that would make matters worse?
From Denver ABC 7:
“They were so mistreated. It just wasn’t right,” said Rhonda Sherill, who said she worked at Ridge in the 1980s. “Some of them would be put in what they call time out, which was basically a cage they would put him in until they weren’t combative.”
Eventually, this “section of hell" disguised as a medical facility was closed and sat abandon for years. Now, mostly demolished, “Ridge Home and Training Center for Mental Defectives” is the site of apartments and shops.
I personally would rather be homeless and not shop than to step one foot on those grounds. One can only imagine the horrors that these individuals must have lived but, one thing is apparent: Everyone was not happy at "Ridge Home for Mental Defectives."
Sadly, despite these changes, there is still much work to be done in bringing people living with invisible disabilities and mental illness “out of exile".

10 small things …
I finally dragged myself to do grocery shopping today.
It took FOUR Hours.
After all the product decisions, lights, noise, screaming little ones and overwhelming, over-stimulation.. I’m a puddle, in a glass, that got knocked over on the the floor. I feel like a stain on the rug. Oh yeah, I still have to put all the groceries away.
“The act of cooking or doing groceries are both exhausting.” (Evie)
It’s not unusual for people with #BrainInjury and other #InvisibleDisabilities to dislike, and be taxed greatly, by daily tasks. Evie’s piece: “10 Small Things You Can Do to Help Someone with a Brain Injury ”, is a concise, easy reading jem. This is a must for anyone interested in understand and accommodating people that live with (ID) invisible disabilities. It’s worth two minute to read, don’t you think?
As one living the subject matter, I find Evie’s list to be the perfect glimpse for those “looking in”. So many, are unaware that even little things can exacerbate a person with IDs. From where to sit in a room, to being asked “how are you doing “, Evie has great wisdom on accommodation.
For me at times, bright light is like kryptonite with a migrane. Shrilly sounds... and even the “buzz" of shoppers in the background, weakens my battery and bends up the spoons.
The brain is a powerful force that controls our breathing, movement, emotion and thinking. Like any other “muscle”, it wears down and needs rest. This is also true for the brains of individuals with many types of invisible disabilities. Better understanding and accommodation go hand in hand.
Evie offers her insight in:

“I couldn't really imagine, what it's like to not imagine…”
PHOTOREALISTIC IMAGINATION - APHANTASIA - HYPERPHANTASIA
Imagine…rather picture.. no, visualize a place in your m.....
What if none of these were an option for your brain? No going to your happy place, where the flowers are in bloom and the tea is hot? No being comforted by the golden sunset on the beach, or the vista from atop the mountain in your minds eye. Yes, “I couldn't really imagine what it's like to not imagine…”
The experience of those that live with Aphantasia, can be accompanied by memory issues and difficulty remembering faces. This is not to say, that these individuals cannot retain information, or remember intricate detail. When giving descriptions, people with Aphantasian will often cite detailed facts and data, rather than using imagery. Many are likely to be introverted, as well.
Some information on Aphantasia, dates back to the1880s but, there hasn’t been a lot of attention on the subject until recent years. The brain’s cerebral cortex is thought to function differently, causing interference with mental visualization. One view on Aphantasia considers, it may only be a different way of thinking; suggesting the Neurodivergent, rather than the neurological.
With Hyperphantasia, some people experience powerful imagery generation within the mind; or being said to have “Photorealistic Imagination”.
"Typically, individuals with hyper-imagination are able to construct imagery that is beyond detailed and brightly outlined—resulting in some individuals having the capability even to experience a 360-degree vision.."
Paul Deretskiy
The contrast between Aphantasia and Hyperphantasia, is just another fascinating reflection of the human mind. The links below are definitely a rabbit hole worth exploring. It seems I may know a bit about photorealistic imagery, as well as little more about myself. Imagining what one with Aphantasia may experience, I’m at a loss...
I imagine it may feel… like “being blind in your mind”. I couldn’t imagine, “what it’s like not to imagine”.

Did you know? #Microsoft has a support line just for Persons with disabilities. It can be very helpful for people that have limitations with written communication.
The #helpline is only for persons with disabilities or, help with accessibility accessories. They seem to be working to #EndAbleism in this regard. The response time is not too bad either. What's the longest that you've waited on hold.
The number is: (800) 936-5900
#MicrosoftAccessibility constantly seems to be developing innovation, with the #DisabilityCommunity in mind. Thier #accessability page is user friendly, dividing links by #DisabilityAccessories and need. Tools for people with mobility, visual and hearing impairments, are only a small part.
Among the many disability-specific links, are pages to assist those with #InvisibleDisabilities. #Neurodivergence and #MentalHealth pages, along with some #DisabilityGaming accessories game changers. Limb Difference accessories for Xbox, well... Guess who could be a gamer with EA #NHL, again. #GoBolts
Thanks for thinking of, and accommodating our community MS. Other companies that just fire their Accessability Team, could learn from your example.

My goodies make amazing stocking stuffers & gifts for people who haven't felt representated in the mainstream almost ever!

👋 i’m a 28yo disabled queerean woman trying to crowdfund for my survival fund bc of increases in essential bills, decreases in benefits (😪), & bc in the midst of all this i still can’t work in my current state of health.
you see 7yrs ago i had 2 near-fatal attempts, a month apart, that resulted in a 3-day coma, 2 traumatic involuntary stays & 6mo later i was sexually assaulted. all of which resulted in ptsd which combined w/my chronic pain, adhd, eating disorder, & severe treatment-resistant depression made going to my undergrad classes nearly impossible. i ended up going from a scholarship-winning, 4.0 gpa student to a student who was academically dismissed bc she couldn’t even leave her apt or read a few pages of schoolwork. luckily with some hard work on treatment & explaining my circumstances with my college, i was able to reenroll for the fall semester right before the pandemic started 💀 anyways, that & issues w/medicaid that caused major setbacks in treatment & recovery progress.
since then, i’ve been trying real hard to get my health/wellbeing back to a state where i am recovered, manage my chronic health issues & can study again to pursue my degrees.
PLS donate &/or boost to help me raise $$$ for my survival fund ♡ no amount is too small & i wouldn’t be begging like this if i didn’t need to 😔

Do you buy and use lanyards?
I don’t use one myself but I’d be very happy to design and some #neurodiversity pride and disability pride ones to Fluffmallow.

(Updated) Introduction time:
I am a white man nearing his 50's (shhh), with an Irish heritage (Slainte), living as a coloniser on the stolen lands of the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung people of the Kulin Nation. I am grateful for my position in this life.
I will uplift minority voices and women, over white cis-het straight men of a certain wealth and standing. Grumble somewhere else if this hurts your feelings.
I'm looking for upbeat people (Australian?), fellow rainbow community members (I'm trans masc, bi, queer), photographers (particularly landscape), artists, gallery managers to collaborate with, neurodivergent individuals etc...
All those things describe me, plus I love hiking and camping and [queer] film (oh my).
I use and appreciate content "wrappers"/warnings so I can pick and choose when to engage. I also use and appreciate alt text (either Pascal Case or camel Case) due to my cognitive disability.
I would freaking love to read your own introductions in the comments to this post.
I do not follow journalists, politicians, most "celebrities", or companies. I loathe AI "art", noisy invasive drones, and cyclists who peddle on the footpath and expect me to move out of their way.
I love the moderators on Aus.social 😍
