I've been trying to find a name for this tune for awhile now. And, as these things often go, I stumbled onto it while I was looking for something else.

'The New Road' reminds me of a condensed version of 'Farewell to Erin.' Or maybe what someone might come up with if they were trying to play 'Farewell' but didn't remember the tune very well.

@stroughtonsmith a bit late to the party, but I recently released a new iOS app for managing music score collections in the ABC notation format, https://notabc.app. It’s a bit of a niche app I guess, but it might interest musicians playing #IrishTrad music and other traditional music genres #showcase

@thesession I use a $20 USD iOS app called forScore, which is a glorified PDF reader. All the tunes we regularly play at our session are in there. There’s a Dashboard where you can make Reports and one tells you which tunes you’ve played the most in the last month, and exactly how much time you’ve spent on them. I pick the lowest one on the list and start there, so as to make sure I don’t just practice my favorites all the time. #IrishSession #TradMusic #IrishTrad

Sweet set of hornpipes here by Maurice Lennon. Stashing them here as I couldn't find sheet music (at least for the first one). #Irishtrad #fiddle

Matt Molloy and Dónal Lunny both masters of #irishtrad with James Galway of #classical fame in Studio One, 1977. The players compare and contrast their different traditions. Galway, who was brought up in a working class family is clearly loving Molloy's playing around 14+ and in his talk which follows he mentions how classical music is so strict that he can't be as free as Molloy saying of classical music: "I mean, don't let anybody enjoy it for God's sake!"

What I'm learning: The Mortgage Burn, a great reel composed by Cape Breton piano player Gordon MacLean. I first heard this tune on the 'Crystal Clear' album by the late Cape Breton fiddler Jerry Holland.

I'm finding it a harder tune to learn on concertina than it was on the fiddle. This version in a teaching video is pretty much how I've heard it played in Cape Breton.

Went to a big Irish session yesterday night, one that I’ve been meaning to go to for a while but was scared.

Cello isn’t really expected at these but I was really well received, especially when I played one of their signature tune that one of the guys there composed.

(sorry for the crappy recording, the mic was in my bag just so I could catch some of the often played tunes there, not placed to get a good sound xD)

Tune’s name is The Milk Tooth.

Just released version 1.5 of GitHub Fiddle Tunes project, now with 50 traditional Irish #FiddleTunes #IrishTrad #IrishMusic #TradMusic #Violin 🎻🪕 https://github.com/lorddev/fiddle-tunes/releases/tag/1.5

'The Green Fields of Glentown,' a big reel written by the late Tommy Peoples.

One of the hardest tunes I've ever learned. It took me forever to wrap my brain around all the stuff that's going on in it.

I asked Google's Bard AI "What reel to play after The Boy in the Gap". It suggested Morrisons Jig, The Boys of Bluehill (a hornpipe) and finally a reel: the Hare's Paw saying they were all popular and well known and would get everyone dancing, except only one of the suggestions was what I asked for and anyone who was trying to dance the reel while I played a jig and a hornpipe would most certainly *stop* dancing and throw a shoe at me.

15) Dance Music from the Cork-Kerry Border
Johnny O'Leary

Rockin' in at 15 is a new discovery of mine.

O'Leary (taught by O'Keefe) is considered one of the great box players of the region.
This recording is just amazing.

It really shows how much of Sliabh Luachra music is rhythmic improvisation and accenting.

It also show cases how much dancing is an integral part of the music as many recordings have the sound of dancers.

These last couple of weeks I’ve been diving into my next app, codename MyTunes.
MyTunes is a personal database of tunes and scores in the ABC notation format, the most widely used by #IrishTrad musicians.
I’ve been using this app myself for a couple of years, now it’s polishing time.
I’ll keep you posted!

As a player of #IrishTrad music, St Patrick always gets me somehow. This year I’m playing a few tunes with friends, after many years without gigs or sessions, so I am super happy 🎼 🎻🪕

As it’s St Patrick’s day, interested to know what music you like to listen to?

Here’s a selection of music which includes my Uncle PJ who passed away in 2005, RIP. A fine concert flute player.

Had a great #Session last night at Duffy's Tavern in Chico. It was quite crowded, we were packed in like sardines. I brought my octave Mandolin. Had a hard time hitting the high B's on a couple tunes that I hadn't practiced. Favorite set was Kid on the Mountain, Gort Na Mona, and suddenly Paddy on the Landfill. #IrishTrad

@PlasticJohnny @irishtrad @accordionnoir
There was a point in the 1930s where they might have known people who were first or second generation from the very first box players in the tradition. So they were knowing the original playing techniques right there. It doesn’t hardly go back further than that

14) As it was in Toureendarby
Timmy O'Connor

Born around 1935, Sliabh Luachra box player Timmy recorded this album in his mid-70s.

Timmy grew up playing in crossroads dances in the country, and this album was him recollecting the way the auld fellows played when he was young.

A very rare glimpse of #IrishTrad from the past. It's interesting to note that he's playing much more simply than today, almost more like a fiddle.

A couple of all-Ireland champions rocking out a great set of reels. Played this set with my daughter earlier this evening. The 2nd tune is really interesting for backing. Took me a few times through it to figure it out, but the intensity really kicks in every time you change parts. Unique tune. #Irishtrad #fiddle #accordion

While not unheard of, harmonica is not a common instrument in Irish traditional music. This lovely and unexpected clip includes all three of the Ballydesmonds, too.

Irritated orange Manx cat blocks access to Anglo concertina in the background. The expression on his face indicates that no more Irish tunes will be allowed.

I know I have their album in the house somewhere. I need to find it now!

' Crocket's Bar, Ballina, Co. Mayo : Mayo fiddler, Julie Langan & Verena Commins on button accordion with a set of hornpipes, The Last Hornpipe & Grier's Hornpipe. They recorded this particular set on their album "Fonnchaoi", released in 2000. This clip is from the music series Geantraí aired on TG4 in 2004. '

Posted my first video in some months. One of the goals of my group for this year has been to learn a few #irishtrad sets so I've been finding cool stuff we can do and writing it out, then recording it so friends can practice as they have time. I use several #opensource programs to make videos including: guvcview #gimp #kdenlive and #ardour running in #ubuntu https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eRHRGI3Z4ow

Two of the most talented and influential players of Irish traditional music in the past 50 years. Definitely the pure drop!

My intro post mentions that I play Irish music on the fiddle and concertaina. What I didn't mention is that I stopped playing about 10 years ago and only started again last spring (last fall for you antipodeans). It's been rough! Not quite as bad as learning either instrument for the first time -- muscle memory is amazingly persistent -- but even more miserable since I'm having to relearn techniques and tunes that were once second nature.

Today's tunes to work to is Ulaid w/ Michael McGoldrick. I'm a big fan of Sean Óg Graham's guitar (and his quick string change here!)... these are not easy transitions. Been working on this set with my local flute playing friend. If you play flute, check out McGoldrick, McSherry, and Brian Finnegan. Those three are pushing boundaries... fun stuff! #Irishtrad #flute #music2work2

Another bird refugee. Would love to mutually connect if any of the following resonate: Irish trad music, trials of being a small business owner/manager, running/cycling/swimming, American living abroad (CZ for me), and/or if you're just a decent person who is trying to make the world a better place. Glad to be here.
