Installing Windows for the first time in a decade for my parents.
Never before have I seen such a trash tier operating system. It doesn't even feel like you own you own computer anymore.
- Trying to convince you to create a online Live account to use your computer.
- Shoving junk you don't need down your throat. Pinning it all to the start menu.
- Begging you not to download a better browser, begging you again when you change all the web defaults by hand.
- Begging you to use OneDrive.
- Claiming that OneDrive and an online account is a "security" feature.
- Even the god damn Photo viewer app is full of junk now. And the most recommended alternative online is malware.
- Doing it all again when you run a software update.
AND trying to charge you $249.99 for a HOME license on the app store for the privilege of not owning your own computer.
Long live Linux, you'll have to pry it from my cold dead hands.

Had a request from someone working for a charity to see if we had a secondhand monitor that they could buy personally and then donate to the charity as they're working off a small laptop display alone and struggling to cope with it (not even full HD resolution, yuk) and finding it difficult to work.
Instead we're just sending them a new 24" IPS Display with our blessing as a donation.
You can't help everyone with every request, but we like to do our part.
The fact one of my escalation points provided one of those shadey generic "fix any error just downloaded this file" sites as a troubleshooting step makes me question the #ITSupport Life
Waiting for a colleague to finish copying a database to deploy a new web server. We're upgrading from the "old" Ubuntu 20.04 to FreeBSD 13.2.
Our CMS is Magento, with a dedicated FreeBSD jail for each component: Elastic, MySQL, Redis, Nginx+PHP, Varnish.
This setup has been tested on other e-commerce platforms and delivers excellent performance, thanks to Varnish.
In our line of work, we're operational when others are, because support is needed, and we often work when others don't, to avoid causing disruptions. And that's one of the reasons I love this job 🙂

If you ever wanted a simple explanation of #ITIL and why it matters. I wrote a super simple intro to it and example.
I wonder how many VMs IT support types run are just running so that they can have one instance per client using 365 to try and reduce the number of times things get punched or damaged in an office trying to get past the endless authentication loops in the crapware that is 365?
I mean I know it isn't just external people who do it, I've had an MS Support Engineer before tell me they do that for the exact same reasons.
You wouldn't write a system that uses 'SELECT *'' in every call for data?
Right?
RIGHT?
You wouldn't then wonder why the **** it takes so long to load everything, when multiple users are doing queries when of the endlessly growing number of fields and rows, you need almost none of the data...

And then dare to charge someone for this 'development' skill and service?

When is a fix not a fix? When a query script abruptly changes 4000 user accounts and locks them out, causing an unprecedented influx of calls to the service desk only for the fix of the fix to cause even *more* confusion and calls.

I am trying to find a tool/website that will help me accurately draw out a server room re-organization at work, there will be a new circuit added, and things will all need to be moved, rewired, etc. I just cannot find something that lets me design it in a simple way. I could of course do something in photoshop, but I would really rather have a tool meant for the task. I just know there has to be one somewhere.
If anyone knows of a tool matching this, or even coming sorta close to this description, please let me know, and thank you!!

Client: "No one, we were all away and I'm the first one back. Others will be back by 15:00"
Me, looking at the clock and noticing it's 14:30: "Okay, what time did you go to lunch?"
Client: "At 13:30. How long will it take to restore from the backup? Do you think we'll be able to work tomorrow?"
Me, without flinching as I type "zfs rollback *dataset-13:45-snapshot": "Done"
Client: "All the files reappeared!"
Me: "Thank #ZFS, #FreeBSD, and whoever set up automatic snapshots every 15 minutes."

Monday marks 20 years since my business became Ltd. In that 20 years we’ve insisted on doing things differently to other #itsupport companies. We’re still going, still profitable, still investing and have no plans to go anywhere. Many of our earliest customers are still with us.
It’s moments like this that remind me that despite how it can sometimes feel, we must be doing something right otherwise we’d never have made it 20 years.

well I hate to say it, people who have been using computers since the 90's or earlier also somehow dont understand folder structure...
or the diff between their documents folder and a file share
or that drive letters dont really matter
or what a file share server path should look like
or the diff between a SharePoint site and a file share
or the diff between a website and a file share
or that if you need access to this folder, you should wait before submitting 100 requests to files and folders beneath it ... cause maybe you only needed that first request to be processed and sending me 100 requests (3-5 a min) is just going to break my mind on a friday
Guys. If you can't tell your wife the laptop admin password over the phone, you either have an embarrassing password, hide stuff on the admin account, or have serious trust issues. And now *we all know* and I'm stuck in the middle, just trying to install some software. Just don't do that.

I wonder if there any statistics somewhere showing the actual benefit to Pubiic Sector procurement that forcing small businesses to comply with the often arbitrary and incomplete Cyber Essentials rules and requirements gives?
Because I remain convinced as it stands it does more to boost the pockets of those running the scheme and vendors flogging new stuff people don’t really need than providing actual meaningful benefit.
I sincerely wonder how some people manage to use a computer at home, when I see how they screw things up with their work devices...

The server from my week long project of doom is now back in the customers office. All recoverable data is back, and as of about half an hour ago all the workstations have been fixed so they now have trust to the server domain again, so file shares etc now operational.
Quite insane as unexpected projects go and frankly had a proper professional have been engaged (can't really blame the client how could they know?) this situation would never have arisen.
One week ago I started the job (support case) from hell, and it's still ongoing.
Today we've likely now recovered any data that can be, with a gap of 13 months + corrupt files on either side we can't do anything more with.
The server still can't start as the clown who screwed this up ignored the checkpoints and started another instance with the root disk so Active Directory database is corrupt.
There are no backups.
Now manually unpicking AD back to 2021 era.
