Good News: First Born rode his bike from his new place to my new place and it only took 10 minutes.
Bad News: I started dinner before looking for my can opener, which I needed for tomatoes since I was out of fresh tomatoes. Ack!
Good News: I had a can of butternut squash soup that had a pull tab. Add extra garlic, extra herbs, a splash of balsamic and it wasn’t half bad.

She was shocked when she saw one of the #Italian geography textbooks from her daughter’s secondary school.

Tried a lot of programming languages in my childhood up until now, a non-chronological list of ones that stuck with me for one reason or another being: VB6 (that’s what I started on at 8 years old), #pascal (+ #freepascal and #delphi), #perl (+ #raku), #tcl #tcltk, #lisp (usually #scheme, on a good day #elisp #emacslisp and #commonlisp), #elixir, #php, #forth, #lua, #oberon, #modula-2, #cpp #c++, #ocaml, #fsharp, #smalltalk (+ #squeak #pharo #self), #ada, #powershell, #dart, #matlab, #rlang, #zig, #nim, #cobol and #julia. I don’t claim full proficiency in all of these, but I’m familiar enough with these (+ some others not mentioned here) that I could get along just fine with 2 weeks at most of studying and looking through cookbooks and examples). I’m flexible in learning new languages and technologies if needed.
I also do #sudoku and #math for fun (especially functional equations and number theory problems, sometimes calculus and geometric algebra). I am interested in #linguists, #conlangs (#lojban and #esperanto) and #nlp, contemporary (post-‘45, usually post-‘89 for me) history, #balkan history, lower-level stuff (I like to learn about how tools around me work, I’m most interested in #compilers, #emulators and #microcontrollers), #typography and #latex, #linux + #bsd, #msdos, #amiga, #oberon, #plan9, #philosophy, #astronomy (especially in a worldbuilding context) and #philosophy, along with other less notable interests.
I engage in #politics relatively often irl, although I’m not inserting it in absolutely every scenario in my life. As I mentioned, I’m a #leftist and #progressive (or… um… #woke) (Nazis and fascists can have a merry fuck off, DNI with me). I am also a spiritual person, a #deist (if you really want to put it that way, an agnostic, although it’s not quite true) and I find #astrology and #tarot interesting (I’ll let you guess my moon and ascendant, let’s see how close you are).
With that being said, I hope I’m welcome here, you can pick your subset of things that interest you from this list, you have plenty of options. :P Quite a bit longer than last time, but oh well…

In my #Duolingo #Italian i was amused to learn the word for a jacket was “La giacca” – it sounded so similar that I wondered if jacket is an Italian loanword via French
#etymology incoming!!!!
Turns out it’s ultimately a loanword from Assyrian and Hebrew: “shakk” meaning “sackcloth”
That made it into the medieval Arabic “shakk” meaning body armour that was made from or padded with rough burlap or sackcloth which influenced the Spanish “jaco” and Italian “giacca”
In Old French it became “jaque” or “jaquet”. These tunics were also worn by workers and peasants, and the French peasants who rebelled in 1358 were nicknamed “les jaques” – probably equally because Jacques is a common name and because of the clothing they wore (cf. les gilets jaunes)
The Spanish “jaco” and Italian “giacca” and “giaccetta” had similar peasant connotations in the late 14th century (the term first appears in Italian in the late 1350s)
Oxford dictionaries suggests that “jack” made it into Middle English in the same way at the same time and so “jacket” is a diminutive form. Etymonline suggests that the diminutive might have come about because the short tunic had become seen as a woman’s garment. Couldn’t have them wearing a manly jack; they had to wear a little feminine jacket

I have never understood how definite articles work in #Italian so just now I looked it up:
il / i – masculine nouns that begin with a consonant
lo – masculine nouns that begin with s + consonant, z, ps or y
l' / gli – masculine nouns that start with a vowel or an h
la / le – feminine nouns

The first article of the legislation guarantees that even in offices that deal with non Italian-speaking foreigners, Italian must be the primary language used.
Under the proposed law, the Culture Ministry would establish a committee whose remit would include “correct use of the Italian language and its pronunciation” in schools, media, commerce and advertising.
