I so love this
Listening to every version of Caravan on Apple Music, and there are some pretty wild ones. Listening to Jack Costanzo’s version right now. His band was called Afro-Cuban, but he was neither, lol. So far I think Art Blakey’s version is best. Chet Akins and Les Paul’s version might be the most oddball. The Carpenters covered it in a version that seems like a cross between Beach Boys and ragtime. There are a LOT of versions.

Wow, Jimmy Cobb, the drummer for Miles Davis’s Kind of Blue only died 3 years ago. He was 91. He was no Elvin Jones, but he knew how to make Miles shine. Kind of Blue is one of the handful of albums I have downloaded to my iPhone in lossless to use with my DAC.

Picked up a nice, eclectic haul at Josey Records today, featuring a 1977 MFSB compilation, a reissue of Herbie Hancock’s classic 1971 fusion LP Mwandishi, Arlo Parks’ just-released My Soft Machine, and an unexpected find of a 2017 collection of Jean-Jacques Perry rarities.

Great instrumentation here from luminous keyboards, lofty saxophones, fluttering flutes, shimmering vibraphone, harp, acoustic bass and full choir.
At once familiar and new, it’s one of my favorite jazz records I’ve heard this year.
OK, while it arrived the other day, it only qualified for a #NowPlaying this fine Sunday morning. I have to say, this Nagra anniversary record is quite good. Tracks from masters going all the way back to 1955 (Marlene Verplack, Deep in a Dream) to 2021 (drum sound check by Matthieu Latour). A great listen, but also a great reference recording. #vinyl #jazz
