I've been under the weather the last few nights so my planned video from Saturday has been delayed. Hoping to get editing done and uploaded tomorrow (or Wed at the latest). It's a long-ish video covering my entire planetary processing workflow in AstroSurface with data that you can download and use to follow along.
Final product will be this image of Jupiter. Stay tuned!

At first glance, it might appear that two #planets at PSR 1257+12 were the first confirmed #exoplanets.
Those planets were followed in 1995 by 51 Pegasi b, an #exoplanet about half the size of #Jupiter.
However, there’s one exoplanet whose discovery predates 51 Pegasi b by seven years — but a winding series of circumstances meant the planet never got to be considered the first.

Two very round space anniversaries coming up in the next few hours: at 2:26 UTC on 4 December 1973 #Pioneer10 came closest to #Jupiter as the first space probe ever to go there - and at 8:48 UTC on 4 December 1993 #Hubble was caught for the first Servicing Mission and berthed in Endeavour's payload bay at 9:26 UTC. See https://skyweek.wordpress.com/2023/12/04/heute-vor-30-jahren-der-erste-einfang-hubbles for a few links about both milestones.

#Jupiter's #moon Ganymede, the largest in the Solar System, has an icy surface with bright craters and grooved terrain. Its ocean may harbor more water than #Earth's and possibly life. Juno spacecraft's 2021 flyby of Ganymede shortened its Jupiter orbit from 53 to 43 days while studying Jupiter's gravity, magnetic field, and clouds.

Juno Perijove 56 is now complete. The Juno spacecraft is now racing away from Jupiter back along its 38-day elliptical orbit. It is currently 125,000 km away from Jupiter. It was 4,400 km from Jupiter's surface near its northern polar region just and hour and 20 minutes ago.
Now we wait for the images captured by JunoCam while scientists wait for data captured by Juno's other instruments like JIRAM, JADE and JEDI.

Similar to Io, Jupiter's other moons Ganymede and Europa also create auroras in Jupiter's polar regions through their interaction with Jupiter's magnetic field. The intense flux of electrons and ions along the magnetic lines directly crossing the moons create auroral spots or "footprints" of each moon seen in the UV image taken by Hubble in 1998. They move across Jupiter's surface in circles, leaving a trail of glowing auroras behind them.

Jupiter's rotating magnetosphere cuts across the slower moving Io, causing it to develop 400 kvolts across Io and a 3 million amp current. Some of the ions are pulled into Jupiter's atmosphere along the magnetic lines of force, creating a flux tube and auroras/lightning in the planet's upper atmosphere.
Similarly, ionized atoms in the plasma torus travel along magnetic lines and cause auroras in Jupiter's polar regions.

Juno's primary mission ended in July 2021. The mission was then extended until 2025, with 42 additional orbits, including close passes of Jupiter’s north polar cyclones; flybys of Ganymede, Europa, and Io; as well as the first extensive exploration of the faint rings encircling the planet.
The later orbits spend more time inside Jupiter's ferocious radiation belts, risking damage to spacecraft electronics.

Here are a subset of the dates of Jupiter flybys of Juno.
Perijoves 57 and 58 will feature close flybys of the moon Io; Juno will be just 1,500 km from Io's surface during PJ57 and PJ58 on Dec 30 and Feb 3 resp.
Juno orbital period = 38 earth days.
Io orbital period = 42.5 hours (1.77 days).
Juno gets close to Io on every alternate orbit.
Juno orbital period after PJ57 will be 33 days, allowing it to visit Io on PJ58.

The "Io Plasma Torus" is a donut shaped region around Jupiter composed of hot ionized gas (plasma). It is caused by Jupiter's strong magnetic field which rotates faster than Io (10 v 42.5 hours) and the dispersal of about 1,000 kg/second of material (mainly SO2, but also NaCl, S, O, C, K) by Io into the planetary magnetosphere. The torus cross-section is ~210,000 km wide. It glows in UV wavelengths.

Giant #planets can be agents of chaos, ensuring nothing lives on their Earth-like neighbors around other #stars.
Around other stars, the giants tend to kick smaller planets out of orbit and wreak havoc on their climates.
#Jupiter's enormous gravity deflects comets and asteroids that might otherwise hit Earth, helping create a stable environment for life but giant planets elsewhere do not necessarily protect life on their smaller, rocky neighbors.

Has to do with the differences between the cameras and their focal lengths.
But the images by Juno in Dec 2023 and Feb 2024 from a distance of 1,500 km will likely rival this quality.

There are a few raw images of Io at the site, some with Jupiter in the background; however, they require experts like @andrealuck and @kevinmgill to process them and turn them into visually striking images.
I will explain one day why these raw images look like the one shown below.
The image slices below were taken at 06:36:22 UTC yesterday from a distance of 21918.4 km from Io.
The 70 meter antenna at DSN Madrid is communicating with Juno.
Downlink rate = 200 kbps.
One-way light travel time = 36 minutes.
Lots of images and other science data needs to be downloaded.
#Jupiter from last night with Io transiting and casting a shadow on the surface.
Eight hours after its 55th flyby of Jupiter (Perijove 55) earlier today, the Juno spacecraft is racing away from Jupiter in its highly elliptical orbit. It is already 629,000 km away from Jupiter after coming within 4,040 km of its swirling cloud-tops around 10:55 UTC today.

Bye bye Jupiter, we will see you again in 38 days.
Launched in 2011, the Juno spacecraft entered Jupiter’s orbit in July 2016 and was expected to perform 36 science orbits around Jupiter and end the mission in early 2018. Instead, it has performed 55 longer-period orbits and will continue its extended mission at least until Sep 2025.
The graphic below shows the original set of orbits.
Have you noticed how NASA spacecraft are such over-achievers?

Here is the full image of the north pole region taken by Juno during PJ 54 on Sep 7, 2023 at 11:31:32.281 UTC, with some simple image processing by me.
Altitude = 29493.3 km
You can explore many more raw and processed images at https://www.missionjuno.swri.edu/junocam/processing. Try your hand at copying some of the raw images and processing them in your favorite image processing app (I use PowerPoint 😜).
To go with your morning coffee, here is a close-up image (in false color) of the swirling cloud-tops over Jupiter's north pole, taken by Juno during Perijove 54 on Sep 7, 2023.
We can soon expect similar images and more from today's flyby of Io and Jupiter.

Here are a subset of the dates of Jupiter flybys of Juno.
Perijoves 55, 57 and 58 will feature close flybys of the moon Io; Juno will be just 1,500 km from Io's surface during PJ57 and PJ58!
Juno orbital period = 38 earth days.
Io orbital period = 42.5 hours (1.77 days).
Juno gets close to Io on every alternate orbit.
Juno orbital period after PJ57 will be 33 days, allowing it to visit Io on PJ58.

On the night of November 2-3 the Earth will pass between the Sun and Jupiter, which means the planet will be at its closest to the Earth around these dates.
This cosmic event is known as the opposition of Jupiter.
It's the best time of the year to see the planet with the naked eye as it also reaches its peak brightness.
On this occasion, Jupiter will be around 33 million km (20.5 million miles) closer to us than average. 1/2
