I was alternating between #Spanish and English with my daughter at the library today when a women I didn't know walked up to me and said she thought it was great I was raising her to be #bilingual.

I've heard that sentiment multiple times here in rural #Kansas, and never had any negative reaction to me speaking Spanish.

A reminder that just because a state votes Red, it's not necessarily permeated by the xenophobia of right-wing politics.

My once-weekly turn at the wheel for WIBW's Ag Issues program this morning again featured a deep dive into the #commodity markets, this week with Tom Leffler of Leffler Commodities. We focused on the sharp downturn in the #cattle complex, with several live contracts posting $29/cwt losses since October's life-of-contract highs and feeder contracts losing over $50/cwt. We also highlighted the market's reaction (or lack thereof) to this past weekend's snowfall in #Kansas.

❄️ Super snow! ❄️

Okay, the yellow mums are still there, under about 8 inches of snow. #BloomScrolling

This snow is so much fun. We've had fun all morning. Just a giant dump of fresh soft snow.

#kansas #snow

Roses and mums on back patio all covered by heavy snow. The sun is out, the leaves are dark green and peeking through the snow.
A close up of the yellow mums. A small amount is visible. Large mounds of snow on each planter container and on the patio.

11 cases of #Listeria infection have been reported in 7 states in an outbreak linked with HMC Farms peaches, plums and nectarines, the #USA CDC said Monday. 1 person died, and 1 pregnant person who became ill went into early labor.

3 cases were reported in both #California and #Florida, with other cases reported in #Colorado, #Kansas, #Illinois, #Michigan and #Ohio. However, the CDC says the number of cases is probably higher.

Geese. We have a lot of geese this year.

#photography #kansas

A large collection of geese in a black and white format. The geese are scattered in multiple groups. In the front is a cluster on the shoreline. The geese swimming in the middle of the pond are spaced differently. In the far background, they are tightly condensed. This is only about a third of the geese at the pond and probably 3x as many flew off as I was walking to the pond.

Introduction post now that I'm on a server that fits me better.

I'm a Gen-X Southwest-Louisiana-born Cajun living in South-Central Kansas. I have an amazing wife and two children (all of us Autistic). My education is in Physics/Astronomy though I'm currently looking into moving to Philosophy for the future.

My interests tend to be varied, deeply researched, and cyclical. Some of them are listed in the hashtags below.

Currently, I am a very left Communist in politics though I am never married to an ideology. Nothing I've researched so far includes as much of my morality and ethics but Capitalism is plainly evil. In religion/spirituality, I am a firm (though not fundamentalist) agnostic atheist.

I had my first personal computer in 1991 and was forever tech-focused since that time. Soon after, I was introduced to Linux through Slackware and have been an on-again off-again user of it. I am in the Information-should-be-free camp. The Hacker Manifesto by The Mentor has always been my life.

Above all of that, I am a voracious reader with not enough time to read it all.

With all of that said, I am not a "content creator" (really dislike that new phrase)! I am just an individual that occasionally posts about interests. So, unfortunately, if you gravitate towards that, you should probably look elsewhere.

I'm continually looking for ways to improve SM experiences for multidisciplinary artists and advocates whose message is lost to the vast sea of 'alternative' misinformation.

Mastodon is unique and provides the least amount of interference from outside parties and individuals. Yet it's not perfect. A work in progress, which is okay! Lots of friendly helpful people here.

Over the last year I've been studying and adapting Mastodon to fit my unique SM needs as a parent and a writer who does not have a 'tech' background.

Lately I've been trying to maximize the communication space in each post. The alternative text section provides an enormous amount of character space in order to provide additional context information. Not only does it assist those with visual deficiencies, but it also provides a way to enhance communication.

#Journalism #FirstAmendment #MarionCountyRecord #Newspaper #Kansas #USA #News #NoPaywall

Text from article:
With GOP backing, cops across the country have arrested, strip-searched, handcuffed, and beaten reporters for doing their jobs at every level from municipal to national. Reporters covering GOP malfeasance were charged with hacking in Florida, and prosecutors in Georgia flagrantly violated the First Amendment by charging anti-cop protesters with domestic terrorism. Republican lawmakers in Texas introduced a bill that would ban universities and public colleges from supporting non-profit media outlets.

Well-funded Republican media outlets publishing truly fake news—AI-generated content, viral Facebook memes, right-wing scandal sheets masquerading as local newspapers—are simultaneously contributing to the threat. America is falling in the World Press Freedom index, far below other wealthy nations.

Corporate journalism both failed to respond adequately to the GOP’s attacks on the press over the years and to recognize that scrutinizing policing would bring the same kind of authoritarian backlash.

While Republicans called for journalists’ violent deaths, editors and producers gave cover treatment to commentators who joked about bombing them. They ran soft-focus profiles of bigots, stories full of euphemisms like “provocateur” and “lightning rod.” They profiled the same people who chanted Nazi slogans at them and scolded their fellow Americans for not doing enough to understand or reach the people trying to kill them.

Monstrous #heatdome over the central US, among strongest on the books in the region.

Heat index up to 133 in #Kansas yesterday - 120+ rather widespread. Tons more records to fall in coming days. https://wapo.st/45eZiEH #uswx #hot #summer #climatechange

Big ass heat dome over the central US
Maximum heat index on Sunday in Kansas, Missouri, Iowa, Nebraska region. More than a dozen locations topped 120 degrees.

In essence: the #DisqualificationClause only impacts States where the decision-makers, the states' governors, are members of 1 party, while their populations tend to vote for the OTHER party in presidential elections, as is the case in #Kansas. Despite the fact #Kansans had voted for #Trump in '20, they re-elected a #Democrat governor in '22. In theory, Governor #LauraKelly can decide to NOT include Trump's name on the 2024 ballot, blocking him from picking up its electoral college votes .

"The Aug. 11 police raid sparked outrage among #FirstAmendment advocates and #news organizations across the nation. Officers seized computers, phones and other records during the search, a virtually unprecedented event in recent American history. Meyer’s home also was searched...

The Record said stress from the raid contributed to the sudden death the following day of Meyer’s 98-year-old mother, Joan, a co-owner of the newspaper."

Photographs of the Marion County Record #newspaper office that was illegally raided by police.

"The fall of local #journalism has been precipitous — a source of heartbreak and concern for many. I’ve spent two years photographing newspaper offices across my home state of Kansas. In #Marion, these concerns — about community, division, #democracy and #FirstAmendment rights — have collided."
