#Kansas (rejected) new license plates for 2024. Governor Kelly says: "I promised to be a bipartisan governor, and I think we can all admit I succeeded at bringing Kansans across the political aisle in disliking this new license plate."

I've heard that sentiment multiple times here in rural #Kansas, and never had any negative reaction to me speaking Spanish.
A reminder that just because a state votes Red, it's not necessarily permeated by the xenophobia of right-wing politics.
#Kansas will redo its new license plate design because a lot of people hate it
My once-weekly turn at the wheel for WIBW's Ag Issues program this morning again featured a deep dive into the #commodity markets, this week with Tom Leffler of Leffler Commodities. We focused on the sharp downturn in the #cattle complex, with several live contracts posting $29/cwt losses since October's life-of-contract highs and feeder contracts losing over $50/cwt. We also highlighted the market's reaction (or lack thereof) to this past weekend's snowfall in #Kansas.

I let her stay out, but only if she behaved. She stayed out for 20 minutes without harassing me. Then respectfully went back inside. Progress. #TabbyCat #Stevie
Remember this story about the heavy-handed police raid of a small town newspaper?
The dominoes keep falling. To me, it’s a story of a strong-willed and totally unscrupulous bully (police chief) who was surrounded by weak-willed individuals who wouldn’t say no. (Sounds a lot like the #tRump administration.)

what i love most about louise is her grace. she wrote to an author who’d slagged off clara bow & gave him a right tongue lashing: 'you brush off clara bow for some old nothing like brooks. clara made three pictures that will never be surpassed'... she died in 1985, with generosity of spirit intact.

louise brooks (born #otd in 1906) is another human whose surface needs to be scratched in order to reveal her true value.
it seems impossible that certain people ever existed, so determined are they to live life on their own terms - & so unconcerned with abiding by their era’s social mores. [THREAD to celebrate louise's life]

Introduction post now that I'm on a server that fits me better.
I'm a Gen-X Southwest-Louisiana-born Cajun living in South-Central Kansas. I have an amazing wife and two children (all of us Autistic). My education is in Physics/Astronomy though I'm currently looking into moving to Philosophy for the future.
My interests tend to be varied, deeply researched, and cyclical. Some of them are listed in the hashtags below.
Currently, I am a very left Communist in politics though I am never married to an ideology. Nothing I've researched so far includes as much of my morality and ethics but Capitalism is plainly evil. In religion/spirituality, I am a firm (though not fundamentalist) agnostic atheist.
I had my first personal computer in 1991 and was forever tech-focused since that time. Soon after, I was introduced to Linux through Slackware and have been an on-again off-again user of it. I am in the Information-should-be-free camp. The Hacker Manifesto by The Mentor has always been my life.
Above all of that, I am a voracious reader with not enough time to read it all.
With all of that said, I am not a "content creator" (really dislike that new phrase)! I am just an individual that occasionally posts about interests. So, unfortunately, if you gravitate towards that, you should probably look elsewhere.

Schools in Caney, #Kansas will be moving to a four-day school week starting Oct. 30 as the area struggles to cope with severely depleted #water supplies. Students are being offered hand sanitizer instead of hand washing, and trailered restrooms rather than showers as water supplies are expected to be exhausted at the end of the year. Water fountains are shut off, and students have been given bottled water. Porta potties will be brought in for athletic events.

"their confrontation in April marked an escalation in long-running tensions between a group of local #journalists and the officials and community members they cover that would boil over through the summer.
The small-town intrigue might have stayed in a small town, though, had Cody not... led half a dozen officers on an Aug. 11 raid of the Record’s offices and the home of its editor and publisher"
It’s not a great flag but it’s not hard to know which way is up. 🙄
Our #Kansas house sale closes today, and with it, a family era. 15 life-years unfolded in #Lawrence and KC (and 15 years of owning that house, though not the same years). We never meant to live there for so long, and we also never wanted to leave. Kansas was a great* place to live, full of fantastic people, awesome food, fabulous libraries and independent bookstores, the best coffee ... we miss it, and root for y'all still.

"Corporate journalism both failed to respond adequately to the GOP’s attacks on the press over the years and to recognize that scrutinizing policing would bring the same kind of authoritarian backlash.
While Republicans called for journalists’ violent deaths, editors and producers gave cover treatment to commentators who joked about bombing them."
"The Right's war on the fourth estate is nothing new. But when cops raided a rural Kansas newspaper office and its editors’ homes over an investigation in progress, a new horrifying precedent was set."
In essence: the #DisqualificationClause only impacts States where the decision-makers, the states' governors, are members of 1 party, while their populations tend to vote for the OTHER party in presidential elections, as is the case in #Kansas. Despite the fact #Kansans had voted for #Trump in '20, they re-elected a #Democrat governor in '22. In theory, Governor #LauraKelly can decide to NOT include Trump's name on the 2024 ballot, blocking him from picking up its electoral college votes .
"The Aug. 11 police raid sparked outrage among #FirstAmendment advocates and #news organizations across the nation. Officers seized computers, phones and other records during the search, a virtually unprecedented event in recent American history. Meyer’s home also was searched...
The Record said stress from the raid contributed to the sudden death the following day of Meyer’s 98-year-old mother, Joan, a co-owner of the newspaper."

"The fall of local #journalism has been precipitous — a source of heartbreak and concern for many. I’ve spent two years photographing newspaper offices across my home state of Kansas. In #Marion, these concerns — about community, division, #democracy and #FirstAmendment rights — have collided."
