I was shocked/entertained by the story of dissertations being thrown away and then rescued after dumpster images went viral this week. But in #ReadingTheComments, I can't get one out of my head:

"Libraries can't afford to be warehouses that store books that no one ever reads!"

Someone actually thought typing those words and broadcasting them to the world would make them look wise, that they were offering valuable criticism with their take. 🤦Capitalism is so pervasively engrained in westerners that we cannot imagine rare books existing without being profitable! I will tell you, besides going to far off places and accessing interesting environments, finding valuable information in a rare source is a very close second place in ranking why I love being a professor!

QUOTE OF THE DAY

“At the root of the problem is the mismatch between the idea of a university as a refuge for lone geniuses and the collaborative nature of contemporary science.”
The research system still tends to put power in the hands of just a handful of people. Universities should look to industry to learn how to better reflect how research is done today.

Activating logging in #Hubzilla /admin/logs helps you to locate reasons for bugs or misconfigurations.

Additionally, if you run on a shared host, you learn about the routines of your server provider.

Mine never wanted to react to support requests asking for a MySQL restart.
And they loved to keep me in the dark about their routines. After all it's part of their profit not to provide such knowledge.

With logs i am learning, that they have a timed MySQL restart going on everyday at the same time.

Cool.

Orson Research Notebook — About Page

Each major version of Orson features an example image from a historical research notebook in the 'About' page. Version 0.5.0 has an image of a mechanical musical instrument designed by Johannes de Fontana in 1420. De Fontana was an Italian physicist and engineer and an able artist. His diagrams have a striking clarity about them and give a fascinating insight into the technical preoccupations of his times. There are many strange and wonderful works in his book 'Bellicorum instrumentorum liber cum figuris', presented in digital form here: https://www.digitale-sammlungen.de/en/view/bsb00013084

Any suggestions as to what kind of sounds this instrument would make?

A diagram of a musical instrument invention. Created by Johannes de Fontana in 1420. A cog mechanism drives a circular frame containing 6 fan-like objects on hinges. They seem to be designed to flip over as the frame rotates, thus producing some kind of musical or percussive sounds.

This book is the first in English to survey indigenous #knowledge of seasonal, astronomical, and agricultural information in Arab Gulf almanacs. It provides an extensive analysis of the traditional information available, based on local almanacs, #Arabic texts and poetry by #Gulf individuals, ethnographic interviews, and online forums. A major feature of the book is tracing the history of terms and concepts in the local seasonal knowledge of the Gulf, including an important genre about weather stars, stemming back to the ninth century CE. Also covered are pearl diving, fishing, #seafaring, and pastoral activities. This book will be of interest to scholars who study the entire #Arab region, since much of the lore was shared and continues through the present. It will also be of value to scholars who work on the #IndianOcean and Red Sea Trade Network, as well as the history of folk #astronomy in the Arab World.

Abstract:
"People feel they understand complex phenomena with far greater precision, coherence, and depth than they really do; they are subject to an illusion—an illusion of explanatory depth. The illusion is far stronger for explanatory knowledge than many other kinds of #knowledge, such as that for facts, procedures or narratives. The illusion for explanatory knowledge is most robust where the environment supports real-time #explanations with visible mechanisms. We demonstrate the illusion of depth with explanatory knowledge in Studies 1–6. Then we show differences in overconfidence about knowledge across different knowledge domains in Studies 7–10. Finally, we explore the mechanisms behind the initial #confidence and behind #overconfidence in Studies 11 and 12. Implications for the roles of intuitive theories in models of #concepts and cognition are discussed."

Making wild things happen in unbelievably limited, precise, and controlled conditions is instructional, and advances scientific knowledge.

Taking such proof of concepts into the real world is another matter. Some, like FTL drives & time travel, are constrained by limits that prevent them.

When the constraints scale with the challenge/problem, there is no 'win' column, only exponentially increasing cost.

But no, you can't "fight" decoherence in a sustainable way. You could work with it, but that would require not being limited to a statistical (IE, #quantum) model for our understanding of the physics.

How to #hire in a pre-AGI world getting ready to #AGI? We already see #GPT-models acing all the #LeetCode style test batteries and simple coding exercises used by companies. Cheating notwithstanding, are these the skills you want to hire on anyhow?

Let me propose that instead of skills which are already redundant and automated, you might want to hire based on different aspects. Let's start from a hypothetical scenario where you have all the latest large language models in use in your business.

If you ask #ChatGPT now to create redundant algorithmic answers to code puzzles it will do that well, and those solutions are on the level of best engineers. If you ask it to make a presentation of a topic, it will draw off of the whole of Wikipedia and all kinds of literature and even recent scientific publications to make a presentation filled with all that knowledge in an easy to present form.

So, what value does a person bring on top of that?

People know things chatbots don't. That is always true, they also know things other people don't know, and things that aren't written to Wikipedia. These are valuable things these people can teach to your #chatbots.

If the people know everything in Wikipedia and are the best code puzzle champions, they are very brilliant surely, but are nearly useless in an organization which uses AI. If they have life experience which isn't known by chatbots, that is of crucial value. That makes a competitive advantage.

When you #recruit, ask people to tell you something that isn't in #Wikipedia. Test them if they recognize truth from all the noise.

Not only #knowledge, but #trust will also become valuable. Hire people who are in the correct circles you want to be exposed to.

The hunger for chips, knowledge, trust and truth is going to hit like a megaton of bricks very shortly. People will be shocked.

If you are interested in how #dotNET came to its current incarnation, these two blog posts by @andrewlock are drawing a pretty complete picture:

On our route towards #AGI in this #TechnologicalSingularity trajectory we are accelerating on the most burning question is what the tomorrow looks like.

It is becoming more and more difficult to forecast shorter and shorter futures, but now we still have some visibility. What I believe will happen:
- We will experience a huge growth in appetite for #compute, specifically #chips, #data and conveniently encoded #knowledge.
- While we can introduce #AI to our existing industries, businesses and militaries, we will experience the bottleneck where we cannot quite do what we'd like to do as we have too few robots everywhere. We'll probably start building robots like there's no tomorrow, and renting them to be controlled by AIs to construct new factories, logistical centers, military bases and all sorts of things more streamlined for an AI-based society.
- Many people will cede control of their lives and any decisions within their power to AIs. Those who do might do well or less well, but definitely better and better over time as the systems become more powerful. Delegating day-to-day control to machines means that there is less reason for humans to even be informed of the day-to-day operational details.
- Some companies will get boosted by not having to hire so much labor in the first place. I think this will be a stronger dynamic than layoffs, and it will eventually causally drive layoffs as companies with more traditional structures will lose in competition to these new challengers.
- Prices of lots of things will fall, but at least initially, everything that bottlenecks further AI adoption will become scarce. Digital design becomes practically free which means our world will fill up with beauty and purpose.

There is a reason that #LLMs are caled #LanguageModels and not #knowledge models, #reasoning models, or #intelligence models: they are trained, exclusively, to model linguistic form (which is neither knowledge about the world, reasoning, nor intelligence). Their ability to perform other tasks is purely epiphenomenal. The degree to which these epiphenomena are robust is still an open question.

What is Critical Thinking?

📚 "Critical thinking is a kind of thinking in which you question, analyse, interpret, evaluate and make a judgement about what you read, hear, say, or write.

"To become a better critical thinker, you therefore need to learn how to:

[1] Clarify your thinking purpose and context;
[2] Question your sources of information;
[3] Identify arguments;
[4] Analyse sources and arguments;
[5] Evaluate the arguments of others; and
[6] Create or Synthesise your own arguments."

Social bookmarking can be an individual #ToolsForThought and/or a collective #knowledge medium. Useful for #learning and exercising a group's #CollectiveIntelligence muscles:

@beckett @bryanalexander I Haven't used Diigo recently and it's still there, and social bookmarking is still a powerful collective #knowledge tool https://www.diigo.com/user/hrheingold/socialbookmarking

A bridge between #pkm and #ToolsForThought could be useful. How are thinking and knowledge connected? How is knowledge gardening a tool for thinking? What about knowledge about thinking and tools for thinking? Tools for thinking about knowledge?

This is full-on absolutely 100% “Fahrenheit 451” fascism shit. It’s horrifying that we’re moving down this path. We should be filling the streets. My wife got us new gas masks so we’re ready to hit the pavement when the time comes.

I did not expect my assumptions about learning styles to be as challenged by Carl Hendrick's post in *Aeon* as they were. Hmm. https://aeon.co/essays/the-evidence-is-clear-learning-styles-theory-doesnt-work #learning #education #teaching #knowledge

Queen Momoire called quietly in the dark, "I had a bad dream, my hero."
"He's asleep, Your Majesty," Lidja said.
"Why are you here, horse girl?"
"I might ask the same, but there's enough to share. Get in on that side."
Revin, with girls on either side, dreamed he was back on Devishire. "Oh, Emma! Dexy! No!"
He awoke later, shivering. Momo & Lidja were curled up together and had taken the covers, exiling him to the edge of the bed.
"A little #knowledge is a dangerous thing," Revin mused.
