its super annoying since #kubuntu needs almost 2gig right out of the box. having firefox open with a couple of tabs and RAM usage goes up to 3.4gig of 3.7 available. its still in very good condition but now im thinking about getting a used thinkpad for more RAM what a waste.

Из плюсов, всё на столько некрасивое и вендоподобное, что электрон приложения не режут глаз и не выглядят на столько чужеродными

managed to get #kubuntu working on my End 2013 Macbook. Debian didnt want to boot so i tried kubuntu, worked straight out of the box. had to resize root partition in lvm, create home partition after, relocate home folder to new home partition, edit mountpoint of home partition to home and done. its working. gotta se how this works as a daily driver, want to ditch #windows in the future, eventually. been trying linux since 25 years now on and off never stayed. 🤷♂️
I’m in the process of nuking and paving my work laptop to deal with mixed DPI, scaling issues, #Wayland etc. in a dual-screen setup with #Kubuntu 23.04. I just tried the vanilla #Ubuntu 23.04 in a live environment and I’m impressed how most of my problems don’t even exist and how polished the Ubuntu #GNOME setup is! Having switched permanently to #KDE Plasma 5+ years ago (and loving it!), I’m now seriously evaluating a switch back vanilla Ubuntu, if I can’t fix my issues on Kubuntu! ❤️

I'm so glad I made the step towards #linux after keeping it as possibility "whenever #windows will screw up my system again". Yeah. Waited way too long.
Setup is now running #kubuntu (sorry #fedora ) with KDE and dang. I didn't even made to do something and I felt way less distractions and stuff. Also. Running progs / games with the Terminal is something new for me but got used to it already :D
Let's see how it will go on but definitely not regretting it. Solved so many things already (especially GPU related) and I'm sure there will be many more difficulties to come. I hope I'll be ready for them xD

It wasn't as straightforward as I hoped, but after some trial and error I finally managed to dual boot on my main machine. So now Kubuntu will take the main stage and Windows will be there for compatibility reasons. Curious to see what Windows soundware I can manage to make usable in Linux 🤔

Ich muss sagen, ich bin komplett überrascht. Die Mac-Systemwiederherstellung hat nicht mehr funktioniert, warum, kann ich nicht sagen. Die Installation von Kubuntu LTS (vom Memorystick) hingegen lief schnell und ohne Probleme ab. Ich bin erstaunt, dass nach der Installation sofort mein W-LAN unterstützt wurde und alle Verbindungen, LAN und WLAN, verfügbar waren.
Der iMac hat 6 GByte RAM und ist aus dem Jahr 2008, aber er läuft unter Linux wie ein junger Spunt.
Ich bin ehrlich, das hätte ich nicht erwartet. Ich wollte eigentlich nur herumspielen, jetzt bleibt er aber auf dem Schreibtisch stehen, damit ich mich ein wenig mit Linux beschäftigen kann, und ihn als Notfallrechner benutze, just in Case. 😺

Hinzu kommen aber auch insbesondere die Dinge, die über #apt oder heruntergeladene #deb Pakete installiert werden...
Wie kann man hier #transparenz für sein gesamtes Setting schaffen - z.B. für Umzüge oder Aufräumarbeiten? 🤔🙏

Well I finally did it. I’d been tinkering with #LinuxMint for a bit on my daily driver laptop but I’ve finally taken the leap and installed Mint on my main desktop which ran #Kubuntu. I have nothing bad to say about Kubuntu and I might even be back some day but I just felt I needed a change.

I assembled my current desktop computer about 15 years ago, with 2 optical drives.
In that time I've managed to mess up my install of #Kubuntu so badly that I can only boot if I have a disc with #Rescatux in one of the drives. (Can't boot this beast from USB.)
I'm just about finished with my last build, and had to settle on a case with no internal optical drive slots.
I sure hope I can get it to boot from a flash drive! 🥥

After seeing @lemba reply about #LinuxMint I’ve decided to fire it up in a VM and take it for a spin. I’m a #Kubuntu guy but I can see the reason why Mint might be a good start for someone who has been trapped in #Windows for so long. What other #Linux OSes would you recommend for a lifelong #Windows user who might be willing to switch?
@davidbraze I have ended up giving #kubuntu a try and loving it! As a graphic designer the lack of thumbs in the file chooser was killing me! But in Kubuntu, I end up forgetting I am not in windows.
Does anyone else here have this weird bug? I'm using #KDE #Neon (very similar to #Kubuntu #Linux) and it seems that the whole screen constantly, slowly scrolls up or down, by sub-pixel amounts every 1/2 second, for a total of around roughly 1 pixel every 5 seconds or so.
It's most visible on small text and near the top/bottom of the screen which cuts stuff off.It happens across all apps.
I'm using an #Nvidia card and #x11
I don't get the same behavior in #Windows.

Got a #Kubuntu machine connected to the HDMI switcher behind my TV. Whenever I reboot the system remotely while it’s not set as the active input on the switcher it doesn’t detect the TV as a monitor. Then when I try to make it active on the switcher, the monitor never displays and I have to hard power cycle to get the TV to be detected again. Any of my fellow #Linux users have any ideas to fix this?

my mom has a Dell Inspiron 660s (Pentium dual-core processor) from around 2013-ish that i installed #Kubuntu on back in 2019 (because Windows was sooo slow), and outside of me helping her with upgrades (18.04 > 20.04 > 22.04), she hasn't had any issues using it daily (she really has no idea that it's not Windows).. ..she is in her late 70's and not tech-savvy at all.. ..that's a pretty good testament to #Linux ease of use and hardware sustainability
Still looking at Linux distros even though I haven't ordered a new laptop yet.
Basically, I think I want Kubuntu without Snaps:
* "desktop" distro
* Wayland, KDE
* "widely supported" by the commercial software I use (like SublimeText)
* package manager of some sort
* Flatpak for a few things is fine

@klillington #Kubuntu and #Mageia are probably your best bet for the kind of shiny sleekness that people like in Mac. Of the two, Kubuntu is probably the more newbie-friendly. (There's also Chakra, but that's a bit quirky, and requires the command line).

Habe ich bisher die Anonymität bevorzugt, zeige ich jetzt unter echtem Namen Präsenz als trans Person.
Zu meiner Person: Ich bin eine linke, feministische, queere und freikirchliche Christin (Baptistin). Weiß, trans (Coming-out mit 50), verheiratet (seit 25 Jahren), lebe in der Nähe von Stuttgart, stamme aber aus Norddeutschland (nahe Hamburg).
Außerdem bin ich eine Meerjungfrau (daher auch der Name, den ich früher auf dieser Instanz verwendet habe), aber leider vertragen meine Ohren das Wasser nicht mehr. Aber ich bleibe dem Meerjungfrauendasein verbunden. Durch das Dasein als Meerjungfrau (die kein Meermann sein wollte) kam ich damals zu meinem Coming-out. Die Meerjungfrau ist etwas vor der Beinfrau geschlüpft.
Früher eifrige OS/2-Benutzerin, heute allerdings Linux-Nutzerin (Kubuntu). OS/2 (in Gestalt von AracaOS) dümpelt nur noch in einem virtuellen PC herum.
Bis vor einiger Zeit habe ich viel fotografiert, analog ebenso wie digital, jeweils mit Canon EOS (SLR). Das ist bedauerlicherweise etwas eingeschlafen.

I'm trying to install #Proton Bridge on a fresh #Kubuntu install, and keep running into this problem. Any hints out there?
EDIT 1: my package manager can't find 'libsecret' or 'secret-service'. Installing 'pass' does nothing. And kwallet isn't supported, which is ridiculous.

@thatzacdavis Between #Ubuntu and #Kubuntu? Kubuntu feels snappier on my old machine and looks fairly modern with good customization options. But Kubuntu (KDE) has some rough edges compared to Ubuntu. Some of the #KDE customization options can accidentally break the UI if not careful but I am fine with that.
The main reason for the switch to KDE is I wanted a simple modern desktop environment with but something lighter than #GNOME especially because my hardware is a bit old

OK, I'm using an #Apple Magic Keyboard with my #Kubuntu #Linux install (and also on my docked Steam Deck), but the keyboard technically doesn't have a DEL key, only a backspace key.
I'm struggling to find a DEFINITIVE way to achieve a dedicated DEL function (something like Super or Option +Backspace?) since Reddit and Linux forums have roughly 3 dozen different ideas.

annoying #kubuntu thing number 2: how do I make it reconnect to my bluetooth speaker for sound when I start the machine? I have to connect to the speaker manually like people did in the Middle Ages
annoying #kubuntu thing number 1: I have a spinning rust disk which appears at /media/(me)/(long-meaningless-uuid) and there is an image on that disk. I have set that image as my desktop background image. But... it goes away on reboot, presumably because the drive doesn't get mounted until after the OS wants to find its background image. This is... daft. How do I fix it? (Note: "move it to the main disk" is a coward's solution :-))

Probably aren't bug reports per se, although if you lot tell me that they ought to be, I'll file them. But mostly, this is where you explain what I'm doing wrong and how to do it better, or perhaps attempt to futilely instruct me that I am wrong to expect these to work :)
Ok, correction, I can, but the tab order is weird in this dialog, #kubuntu UX peeps.
First #kubuntu bug report; I can’t tab between the two secure boot password input boxes in the installer. (I’ll try to remember to file this as an actual bug when I have a computer.)
When people say that Linux isn't ready for the desktop, I look at them and wonder if they've actually even tried it?
@thatzacdavis I got the Samsung Chromebook 4 from some #BlackFriday deal last year. Then picked up a second one used on eBay so I could tinker with flashing the BIOS and running #Kubuntu. It has a USB-C that the Chromebook charges from. I’ve not tried to charge things off that USB-C though.

@lubuntu is still remaining. I've sent a notice on IRC, like I did with #kubuntu, for #lubuntu to move to fosstodon as well.
Okay, time for an #introduction. I’ve been using #Linux off and on since high school (about a decade ago). I have been using #Kubuntu as my preferred distro since 18.04, but I have dabbled with other distros since then.
I work as a Infrastructure Sysadmin handling Windows servers, Active Directory, Exchange, GPO, among other things.
I enjoy taking tech and unlocking its potential. My most recent project was flashing the BIOS on a Chromebook to install Kubuntu. Nice to meet everyone!
