A closeup of Cladonia lichens and moss.
But look closely, there are two tiny eggs on the lichen's apothecia to find!

A green lacewing larva (f. Chrysopidae) eating an aphid in Central Park in late May. Lacewing larva are a bit terrifying, but the adults are nearly harmless.

#Lacewing (Chrysoperla carnea), I liked the way the netting echoed the wings #insect #wildlife

The larva from a green lacewing (f. Chrysopidae). These are one of the bugs where the larval form is terrifying but the adult is surprisingly weak. At least this one isn't wearing the corpses of its victims as camouflage.

An interesting little mantid-fly I spotted on a walk.

A mantid fly isn't a mantis, but it is an example of convergent evolution. They are lacewings that developed raptor claws like a mantis and some have even adopted the bodyshape and coloration of a wasp (wasp-mimic). Wild little insect.

The cleanup team (green lacewing larvae) is still sleeping. They were super active yesterday late afternoon.

Die waren gestern spät Nachmittag ganz schön aktiv.

In my latest blog post I take a slightly tongue-in-cheek look at one of Substack’s new features: Tags. Kidding aside, I think Tags can be very useful & I’m glad Substack has added them as a feature. https://paulaborchardt.substack.com/p/lacewings-tags-and-substack-tags

Last week we had lots of Green Lacewings on our patio. They’re beneficial insects (meaning, beneficial to humans) as their larvae eat aphids and other garden pests. I love their bright green color—so I painted one for my Perpetual Journal.

#Lacewing children are tiny monsters. They scramble quickly over surfaces in search of small prey into which they will sink their sickle-shaped fangs. When they land on people they attempt to eat you too. For all their fearlessness these insects have no defense. When they bite they are instantly smooched by the gentle pressure of a finger. I have many reliable #EntomologyConsult queries that these bites are not in self-defense but pure offense.

A small brown insect sits on a white wall. It’s back end is pointing down, tapered to a point. The front end with the head ends in two semicircular fangs. There are three legs on each side.

This is the most metal insect I've seen this year. A larvae (maybe a lacewing or related) of some sort wearing a bunch of its victims (aphids) as a hat. In the North Woods of Central Park in early July.
