I probably won't get too far with Korean, but my brain is certainly enjoying learning something different :neofox_happy:
🧠:
- Gosh, this house must have cost you a fortune!
- Actually, it was very 집
:neofox_happy_blep:
It's interesting how pretty much all Korean resources (for beginners) start with hangeul and a quite detailed explanation of Korean phonology, whereas, say, French courses just throw "Bonjour. Je m'appelle Hugo." at you and expect you to roll with it :neofox_magnify:
Whether it is reason 1, 2, 3 or 4, fear not!
I'm here to guide you through it all with a clear roadmap, trust-building insights, and a touch of personal connection. We're in this together!

I know I'm in the minority here, but I wish that Korean textbooks included hanja in vocab lists. Like, I'm much more likely to remember that "word" is "단어" when I know it's "單語" (= 単語/たんご), with the same 어/語 as in 한국어

Can someone #recommend a good iOS app for an absolute beginner to learn #ancientgreek?
It would need to be a low cost investment and the primary focus would need to be teaching me the Greek alphabet; any vocab would need to be transliterated into Latin letters (at least at first)
I’ve found some apps that are more dictionaries and verb drills, which assume you already read Greek letters. They would be good for more advanced learners but I am not there yet

I'm reviewing and practicing hiragana and omg, why are these two characters so similar? ぬ め
And also these two? る ろ
Ahhhhhhhhh 😭
I’m finding that #diyFlashcards don’t take any more effort to maintain than the regular variety.
The 3 or 4 seconds it takes to change a card’s status after reviewing it aren’t wasted: I use that time to repeat the flashcard contents a couple more times.
Anyway, it’s satisfying (and fun!) to see cards disappear from saved searches after being attempted and modified.
One of the loveliest moments in language study is when you produce a sentence or word and you don't know where it came from, it wasn't on your vocabulary list, on your flashcards, on the gap-fill you did that day... it came, it seems, from nowhere. It's as if it came from the dark tides of the mind, where we are not actually present. Like in the fairy tale, you open your mouth and a jewel comes out of it.

The store happened to offer a 20% back-to-school discount, plus they threw in the Czech translation of Pat Barker's "The Silence of the Girls" (in hardback!) for free :neofox_owo:

Gamification plays a big role in the language learning space these days. Using the same psychological tricks as mobile gaming is certainly a great way to build a startup.

I finished my first novel in #Japanese, また、同じ夢を見ていた! 🎉 I understood it well enough to enjoy it, laugh at parts, and have opinions on the characters.
This feels like a big step forward. I'm also glad to see my reading speed increased over the course of the book, especially since it took sooooooo loooooooong to read compared to my (native) English reading speed.
I wish Duolingo would give us a break with the inductive learning sometimes and just *explain stuff*. Arabic is so different from English, and it would spare me a lot of unnecessary mental effort to just have the grammar and syntax explained, especially since there's no teacher to go to with questions on an app.
Help! I need a Korean speaker to clarify if 의 means "the" or "'s". Please and thanks.

A reached out to the nearby music school 2 years ago to start my daughter on lessons. I had never expected the young teacher we got assigned would speak #Cantonese but fate would have it and I asked if she could speak it. She was THRILLED to teach in her own tongue and my daughter was her first student in Cantonese. She only teaches a day a week and is in demand so I switched my daughter to another teacher and gave the spot to my son who needs more language help.
I'm sitting outside listening and wow. Just wow. Part of language learning really is finding opportunities to expose them to it in different contexts. I'm feeling really fortunate we have this.

Hello, my name is Lily, and I am a #bi #socialist from #Philly. I am an activist, but I avoid posting about IRL stuff so I don’t doxx myself. But, even tho I don’t post much about politics, I do read about politics here, and I do also sometimes reply.
I mainly post about my hobbies: art and #languagelearning. In terms of art, I do #DigitalArt #WaterColor #Crochet #InkWash #VisualMending and #BulletJournal. I am hoping to start making #WebComics soon, and I am taking my first steps into #FlowArt. So that I can learn to write for comics, I am recently responding to #CreativeWriting prompts. For language learning, I am a native #english speaker, advanced in #esperanto, intermediate in #japanese, a beginner in #spanish.
Of course, I will also be posting about things I read, watch, listen to, and play. This is inherent in social media! Generally speaking, my interests skew nerdy… I love #ScienceFiction, especially #StarTrek. I also read a lot of nonfiction #books.

Ĉefe, mi afiŝas pri miaj ŝatokupoj: artumado kaj lingvolernado. Pri arto, mi faras bitarton, akvarelojn, kroĉetadon, inkon, flikadon, kaj taglibron. Mi volas fari retkomikson kaj mi volas lerni dancadon.

I’ve used Brainscape, Anki, and the excellent Spaced Repetition plugin in #Obsidian. Donated to the last one, it’s so good.
But I don’t use any of them any more for #flashcards, because I’ve created my own version that uses plugins solely for convenience!
It’s an analog-inspired workflow that can be as manual or automated as you want, with no coding knowledge required. Free, unless you want to get fancy. Obsidian recommended.

I forgot to mention due to the hurricane, but I finished the iterative listening challenge a couple days ago! 12 episodes, each viewed 6 times (EN subs, TL subs, no subs + repeat), then one last viewing all the way through. I recommend it, it was absolutely worth doing. :)
When it comes to building literacy skills in a second language, understanding how that language's writing system works is paramount.
In this article, I survey different types of writing systems, and showcase how I design learning activities that help build basic literacy skills in languages that use those writing systems.

#TIL that 口に出す and 口を出す mean very different things!
口に出す definition: 話す / speak
口を出す definition: 他人の話に自分の意見を言う(自分は関係ないのに) / to interrupt/meddle/butt in
Turns out particles are important, even in idioms!

Welcome to another #hebrew lesson!
You are always welcome here on Hebrew by Inbal so check back often 🤗
Forgot to share, I was given another resource for writing prompts! :D (This one has loads!)
As a novice, 書 is a truly ridiculous kanji. How am I meant to fit EIGHT distinct horizontal lines in the space for one character!?
Y'all kanji is gonna be the death of me. :deadxielian:
How the hell do ppl do this?!

Like I love language learning but I almost never do it because my job (doing Spanish proofreading and translation project management) sometimes makes me feel like I can't brain anymore that day. But I always love language learning when I sit down and do it! Now just to decide which of the languages I started learning in 2020 to pick back up, Italian or Korean... Or I could improve my Spanish more... Or all 3... Decisions decisions! #languagelearning #langtoot
I'm really enjoying Mastodon now that I've almost entirely abandoned Twitter. I never said anything on Twitter really, it just sucked me into doomscrolling and occasional amusement. But here I love that I see more cute pets, more beautiful photos of nature, and especially people enjoying their various amazing hobbies. It's actually inspiring me to do my hobbies (of which there are many) more often. #hobbies #crafting #languagelearning
Which apps do you use to learn a language? (Please boost for wider reach.)

I want to get into the habit of writing more. I think it'll help with my speaking. Problem is, I'm awful when coming up with topics to talk about x'D It gets old fast just talking about my day, haha. Anyone know a good list of prompts? #langtoot #languages #languagelearning #study
Being back in Prague means it's time re-pack. Since I'm not moving to Estonia anymore, Estonian textbooks will go the storage unit.
I'm not giving up or dropping Estonian, it's not something I want to focus on right now.

Hey! Do you want to #help #Mastodonters to learn their target language?
Correct your #native #language!
Look for the #hashtag "correctMy" + 2 letters corresponding to the ISO 639-1 language name 👉 https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_ISO_639-1_codes .
Examples: #correctMyEs, #correctMyFr, #correctmyDe, #correctMyEn...
🚨Then #FOLLOW the hashtag of your native language and help people #improve the language they're learning. I'm from Spain, I correct #Spanish ☺️. #langtwt #langtoot #languagelearning
🚀 #SHARE, PLEASE!
Is this an arbitrary milestone? Am I glad I've reached it? Have I learned a lot? Do I still have a long way to go? Yes, yes, yes, and goodness yes. Sì, oui, ja, mhmm.

I've been talking a lot about #Duolingo so let's talk now about #Babadum instead. I feel this is a much lesser known website, but it's a fantastic way of improving your #vocabulary (and just that) in an easy game like way. You don't even need to register to use it and they have many #languages (unfortunately not #Dutch). They use European #Portuguese by the way.
Hmm I thought saying “my name is cam” in Haitian Creole would be “mwen non se cam” but it’s “m rele cam” lot to learn I could have sworn Duolingo accepted the former answer previously
