TIL The name "Double U" for the letter W comes from the sound two successive u's were to make in early Latin. E.g., "equus" pronounced ek-woos.
And in printing, it was common to use consecutive V's for W, which over time became a single W shape. 😲

It may be November now but a lycanthropy hyperfixation is forever.
My current hyperfixations:
Lycanthropy and wolves - since 2012, including the mythological history of lycanthropy (specifically Greek with the myth of Lycaon.)
Lingustics - since 2019, a lot of languages explored (not to fluency, dear God) including Old English, "Ænglisċ" with its script, futhorc, English's sister language, Frisian, Arabic, Welsh and Scottish Gaelic, various Romance languages including Latin itself, Greek, a few Slavic languages (Russian, Ukrainian and Polish specifically. I know how to read Russian-varient Cyrillic), Japanese, Korean, a few conlangs like toki pona and Esperanto. I got a 5 in both English and French language GCSE without studying. I also know how to read the IPA.
Poetry - since 2020, 120 poems have been written and counting, organised into ~45 subfolders.
My previous hyperfixations:
Biology - 2011-2015, especially neuroscience.
Astronomy - 2012-2016
Vexillology - 2019-2021, I can recognise most national flags.

🙂 The confusion between "CVs" and "CVS" could happen only in the U.S. But if you want to get really pedantic, the plural should be on the "C", not the "V", so "CsV" or (going full Latin) "CaV" (curricula vitae or curricula vitarum, depending on how many lives are involved).
The singular form of "homo sapiens" is "homo sapiens". "Sapiens" is a Latin adjective meaning "wise" (singular). Treating it as the plural of """"homo sapien"""" is calling our species "wises human". The Latin plural would be "homines sapientes" but we don’t use plurals with species names so the singular and the plural are both "homo sapiens". (Non-English Indo-European grammars tend to be more visible and require a lot more textbook grinding.)

I was wondering, how many of you speak (or "know") any #deadlanguages such as #Latin or #AncientGreek or even #ConLanguages such as #Esperanto, #Klingon or #Quenya. And if so, is there some actual purpose or is it just some kind of nerdy/niche hobby?
What kills me about learning #Latin is you’re effectively learning two languages at once. You’re learning the actual vocab, conjugations, declensions etc – and you’re also learning the language of #grammar itself: what the grammatical rules and parts *are called* and how they map to particular functions of language
Latin is the kind of language that, in the past, used to be drilled by asking discipuli things like “what is the passive second person plural subjunctive” or whatever the fuck
This means that a lot of the language learning tools I’ve encountered are based on the assumption that you already know this ‘second language’ of grammar, so eg the vocab flashcard lists I have found have got verbs in four different forms, and I’m like “what the fuck do those mean? Which is which and how do I know which one is called for in which situation?”
Like, I can tell that one of them is the infinitive and one of them looks like the first person present indicative – and by the way, these are terms that I only know because I’ve had to teach myself grammar in order to edit other people‘s work – what the fuck are the other two??? I’m just looking at them going, “well, you know, it’d be nice to know that”
If you are a native English speaker aged under 50, you probably didn’t learn grammar at school in your first language, and you probably don’t even know how to apply these words to your native language!
As a copyeditor in my own first language, English, I have had to teach myself the language of grammar in order to explain *why* certain choices I intuitively know are right or wrong. I am an EXCELLENT editor and yet I still have to look up English.stackexchange to find out what the word is for the function of language I am trying to explain
I’m honestly not sure if the traditional rote learning method or the intuitive ‘immersion’ method of language learning Duolingo uses is better for Latin
because Duolingo’s weakness is that it is based on guessing: you never learn the rules and so you don’t know *why* something is correct or not correct, which can help you analyse what a certain sentence demands
Basically Duolingo wants to make everyone into the same kind of speaker that I am in English
Surely there’s a happy medium
(Unfortunately I suspect it is ‘formal language classes such as one takes in school’)
I think what will really help my #Latin is not so much knowing *how* to decline nouns and more knowing what kind of *usage* each case represents
Like, actually knowing what “genitive” (just for example) actually means will help me decide which case to use
I have them all written down somewhere but as soon as I have actually memorised what each case means and don’t need to consult my cheat sheet, I will have much more of a handle on the vocab
In #Duolingo I never understood which case was needed and would just guess and wouldn’t know why something was right or wrong. The Duolingo Latin course is so shit that it doesn’t allow you to acquire the intuitive understanding that the whole Duolingo method is built upon

Whenever I see a news item about Romney, I think it's about the English artist who did such great drawings of Orpheus and Eurydice. I am always disappointed.
This is made even worse by the fact that the artist's first name is George (the same as Mitt Romney's father--the guy who incautiously said he had been brainwashed about Vietnam).

This is fascinating!
I've been studying #Czech, which shares a ton of #phonemes and #vocabulary with other #Slavic languages, but is written with a Latin-based character set (I say "Latin-based" because Czech uses an assortment of #diacritic marks as #pronunciation modifiers on an otherwise standard #Latin character set).
On several occasions, I've come across a #Russian or #Ukrainian word written in its native #Cyrillic script followed by a #phonetic pronunciation guide written in Latin characters, and consequently recognized the word as one that is shared with Czech.
