New #Introduction posts since the others were getting stale!

My name is david, and everyone knows that I’m a dog on the internet :bowie: That said, I don’t define my whole existence around being a #furry, but I also like the community and friends that I have made there :bowie_blush:

For personal identity things, I’m a mixed-race #latine currently residing in Florida in the US. I am queer, and currently use the labels #agender, polyamorous, and pansexual. I am mid-thirties and use they/them pronouns and do not capitalize my name. I am neurodivergent #AuDHD.

:v_agender: :v_pan: :v_trans: :verifiedpolyam_tricolor:

I am a web developer, and mainly focus professionally on #WordPress maintenance, and personally on #OpenSource projects that I can share with others. I make simple or fun projects to share and teach others with. I am getting back to making tutorials to share on my personal sites. I’ve also started vlogging about this along with my weekly newsletter! Links in bio

A picture of david wearing a trans flower crown and looking up to the left. They have blue painted nails with a matching blue wedding band on. They are wearing a trans flag chain collar and a shirt that says Protect Trans Kids.
A ref sheet of BowieBarks, david's fursona. The dog is posed front and back, two smaller versions wearing tank tops, an a plush version, as well as accessories. The dog is a mix of tan, beige, and brown, with white, black, pink, and blue accent markings

@Wander for example: i usually take time to mention that i am #mestizo. that does make me part of the umbrella of the label #bipoc, but i prefer to identify as #latino / #latine / #mestizo because those labels feel closest to me; i grew up with them and people at home in #colombia, #ecuador, and #venezuela know what i'm talking about usually.

btw, if you try to use me as your #latino / #latine token "i'm not racist" friend i'll straight up tell you we're both deeply racist at our core, bruh. lmao.

every time i grow more resentful of the #White Passing Mask inside of me. and i wonder how long it's been there. how long it's been hurting not only other people, but myself. blinding me from the beauty of my own #latino #latine culture. i worry about how much of me has been lost to pandering to The System. it eats me inside.

i can hear the echoes of my #ancestors begging to be represented, and it pains me every time i reflexively hide who i am in the face of The Oppressor, The System, because i was brought up to do so. to purify myself of my #brown impurities in the face of the #white system.

#latino #latine

being #firstgen is really weird. just in general.

there's lots of generational pressure/trauma to be something, but no direction on what to be. at the same time, there's also a lot of unanswered questions about what it means to be transplanted from one culture to another. what parts of you do preserve to keep your identity? what masks do you have to live with to survive in the New World? what will you make of your "new opportunity" in America?

#latino #latine

me: i do need to unpack my heritage and recognize my position of privilege how it can blind me from forms of racism within my communities and be humble about my #latine #latino #hispanic origins

also me: YO SOY LA REENCARNACIÓN DE SIMÓN BOLÍVAR CON MI SANGRE DE LA GRAN #COLOMBIA QUE NOS UNIRÁ PARA SIEMPRE

Red Scare at the Smithsonian? Battle Brews over Portrayal of Latino History in Planned New Museum

Last year, the Smithsonian Institution opened a temporary preview exhibition inside the National Museum of American History that has become the focus of controversy within the Latino community, as Republican lawmakers and others challenge what one conservative writer described in The Hill as an “unabashedly Marxist portrayal of history.”

Smithsonian’s Latino museum faces political winds before a brick is laid

In July, a group of Latino Republican members of Congress led a vote to eliminate the museum’s funding in next year’s budget, calling its view of Latinos insulting and inaccurate. Some conservative commentators have harshly criticized the museum’s preview exhibition, blasting it as a Marxist portrayal that paints Latinos as victims of an oppressive United States.

A quote from Matthew David Goodwin about E.G. Condé's novella SORDIDEZ. The image features a saturated blue, pink, red, orange, and yellow Maya ruins, plus the book cover, and the following text:

"E.G. Condé picks up a kaleidoscope in Sordidez and peers into the future, in the direction of Puerto Rico and the Yucatan peninsula, forming a vibrant Latinx vision of our future, and fulfilling the promise of speculative fiction to inspire us in the process of decolonization. Amidst the strange new horrors created by both humans and AIs in this future world, the trans protagonist Vero Diaz endeavors to heal the people and the land through the revolutionary spirit of the Taíno. This is Condé’s first book, and I can’t wait for the next one."

Do not use the term "#Latinx," it is #cultural #imperialism. Use the term "#Latine" if you need to, but absolutely do not use the term "Latinx." I see plenty of #North #Americans who claim that it's not cultural imperialism because "Spanish speakers" in American call for the use of "Latinx" as well, without understanding the nuance of cultural imperialism. Long story short -- "Spanish" is not a monolith, and there are vast differences between the pronunciation of "X" in spanish across cultures.

Because I overthink whenever I set up a new social media bio and did actually have this problem during an ERG call a few weeks ago:

At a family picnic ~15 years ago, during a break after a rough game of horsehoes, one of my great-uncles starts a conversation with his brothers (2nd gen Americans): "So my grandson came to me the other day and asked, are we Mexican-American? And I said...
🤷‍♂️sure(?)"

This started a conversation where every term that we've used in the last while was listed: Chicano, Latino, just Mexican, Hispanic, Spanish (a New Mexico thing).

What should me and my second cousin be calling ourselves? 4 generations in, barely speak an Spanish, etc. Mexican-American? Chicano (if I'm chicano I'm like the indoor cat of chicanos)? Nuevomexicano, really? I usually just said Hispanic which usually means a few generations in here, but I really don't know outside of that, and I also didn't used to work with any Latine from outside New Mexico to have to worry about it.

A brief detour into "but we're supposed to check
white on the census, no?", then finally, as many family conversations go, which cousin's balls to break for being the most Chuppy (Chicano-yuppy) because they golf so much and wear polos for fun.

I tell this story to let you know that I think I'm entering my tio era and it doesn't matter much what I call myself. In any situation where I'm going to identify myself, it's just as likely to be a thing because I am on the lighter side. So any interaction usually ends in one of 2 ways: someone feels seen for who they might be, or someone walks away muttering pinche güero under their breath. I'll take the former even if means the latter.

Here's an interesting survey on what New Mexicans of Spanish Speaking descent (that's a mouthful, right?) I came across last week looking for something else:

Graphic novels have become an obsession in the past year. Having #ADHD, they help with keeping up with reading.

THIS one has become an instant fav! Season of the Bruja by Aaron Duràn is a #Latine story about a young witch and her grandma, fighting against an age-old evil that stole much of their culture.

The story and the imagery are IMMACULATE. Can’t wait for more of this story!

I'd like to know what Spanish-speaking people in English-speaking cultures think about the use of the word #Latine vs #Latinx -- article linked upthread (makes some interesting points about the Spanish language).

God, imagine having to make an introduction post. Really gonna take this opportunity to slide into those tags though 👀

I go by K, they/she. I am #queer, #polyamorous, #Latine, #Feminist, #disabled (blind), and a cat person of 2--Mozart and Mazikeen. My lazy passions are #enneagram (that #enneagram9 hashtag is dead y'all and that's very 9 so no one is surprised), #mentalHealth, #dnd, #accessibility, all types of #music (and loved #singing and #Chorus), #Poetry, and of course, #food. Things that I'm wanting to / should really learn more about are #shroomery, #sustainability, #ClimateChange, #knitting, #guitar, #reading, #AcroYoga, and #fitness.

When I figure out what this account wants to be, I'll move towards that. It could turn in to me posting bad original poetry snippets. It will probably though, more than likely end up with my unoriginal showerthoughts. But I think I'm funny / interesting, so I've got that going for me.

Feel free to follow and say hi!

P.S: let's go image descriptions! They really help people like me. (gentle call out to the folks on this server, I've hardly seen any 😂 ). But also for those of y'all that post photos of poems and do caption them, I wonder if the caption might be better served in your text post to preserve formatting?
