Tonight's #listening from the vault: Fields of the Nephilim - The Nephilim

It's late '80s goth metal named after mythical half-angel "giants" from the bible, so how bad could it be? It's actually maybe a little better than I remember (which is to say, it is good) as I think I thought it was a little dense at the time and not quite my vibe (yes, I listened to this when it was new and so was I), but I did spin it from time to time.

I've been feeling angry lately -- about incompetent professionals, about ethical failings at work, about ethical failings elsewhere.

But I had two friends sit with me in my anger. They let me talk, use impolite language, and get my frustrations out. They didn't tell me to bottle my anger in or have positive thoughts.

And I felt better after.

OK, my first attempt at #listening start to finish to Atum, Billy Corgan's 38 track masurbatorium, vomited up in chunks over the last couple of years. Wish me luck!

Context; I love Siamese Dream and Zeitgeist and quite like Gish, and bits and pieces of Mellon Collie (although the album as a whole I find pretentious and tedious).

Thesis: Corgan makes amazing music when working in dynamic tension with other musicians, and self-indulgent junk the rest of the time.

#Listening to Pretty on the Inside, the first album by Hole;

But there's no question that Courtney is the star here, and the RiotGrrrl attitude is all over the first two albums (this and the excellent Live Through This).

Tomorrow I'm heading to Las Hurdes, in Extremadura, to join forces with the Imago Bubo Rural Collective crew and work in the mediation programme of their project Caravana del Cine.

I'll be facilitating an introductory workshop on listening and acoustic ecology in two locations there: the villages of Nuñomoral and Martilandrán. The workshop is proposed as a series of collective practices of listening and field recording to understand soundscape as part of the territory, of collective memory, and of the current state of the environment.

We will engage the soundscape from a situated perspective: conceptualizing ourselves in the context of our sonic environment and reflecting on its transformation. We will work with our memory of the environment - both individual and collective, both climatic and acoustic - and the loss implicit in its transformation. We will attempt to provide an answer to the question: How to register a sound which can no longer be heard? Which is nothing but a distant echo of itself?

Some great news from The Center For Deep Listening at Rensselaer.

The "A Year of Deep Listening" project in homage to Pauline Oliveros they ran up until the end of May this year will eventually be collected in a book, to be published in Fall 2024 on Terra Nova Press.

Around this time last year, the Center for Deep Listening launched A Year of Deep Listening, a call for Deep Listening scores in homage to Pauline Oliveros. I decided to take part, and eventually sent in not one, but ten scores - and then I just kept writing more. (Rather predictably in my case, all of them turned out to be soundwalking scores). I was also very pleased when one of them - Ariadne Soundwalk - was selected for A Year of Deep Listening.

#PaulineOliveros #DeepListening #Soundwalk #Listening #Scores #CenterForDeepListening

Ariadne Soundwalk

  Go out for a walk.
Take a roll of thread, the longest you can carry.
  Also take a paper cup.
Attach one end of the thread to something fixed and stable,
  like a lamp post.
Continue walking, unrolling the thread as you go.
Once the thread is fully unrolled, stop.
Make a hole through the bottom of the paper cup.
Insert the end of the thread in the hole, and secure it by making a knot.
Stretch out the thread until it is tight like a violin string.
Raise the paper cup to your ear.
  Listen.
Memory Soundwalk

Think of a place you remember well,
but that you know for certain no longer exists.
Walk to a location near where that place used to be.
Ask a passerby for directions to that place.
Listen/record/think about the replies you receive
Following Footsteps (Drift)

Choose a starting point.
  Start recording.
Don't move. Listen. Close your eyes if you find it helps.
Don't move until you hear footsteps nearby.
  Follow the footsteps.
Lose them. Wander around for a while.
  Choose another starting point.
  Don't move. Listen.
Don't move until you hear footsteps nearby.
Things You Didn't Hear

At the end of a soundwalk, think back about all the things
you saw, and expected to hear, but failed to.
Make a list.
Organise the sounds in a sequence.
Go out again, this time listening out for these specific sounds.
Try to organise your soundwalk according to the sequence you established.

Great episode. It's the kind of stuff I learn from my partner @heycaseywattsup
