On the weekend I saw Boom Crash Opera, supported by Bachelor Girl. And I knew a whole Bachelor Girl song... and felt really sorry for the bassist. Bachelor Girl songs (as it turns out) are very simple musically, and although the lead singer has a great voice, the songs overall weren't anything I really was interested in.

A very interesting contrast was evident when Bachelor Girl covered Power and the Passion by Midnight Oil. A song that is entirely driven by a great and complex base line... A song that is musically rich and layered. It was a fascinating contrast between Bachelor Girl's easy music and Midnight Oil's complex lyrics and instrumentation.

And then Boom Crash Opera. I had never seen them live, because the last time I was going to (about 15 years ago), I fell ill on the day of the concert and gave my ticket to a friend. They'd performed music festivals (which I am too old to cope with) between now and then so I still hadn't seen them.

Boom Crash Opera still rock hard. Dale Ryder's voice is still strong (though he drops the octave for some of the higher notes), the band still performs well together and their songs are great. It was lovely seeing such affection between band members and to be part of a crowd of people singing along to songs they love. I definitely recommend seeing them live if you love their music and haven't seen them before.

Joni Mitchell live in 1979. The song is the wonderful and soulful "Amelia." Joni wrote it when she was travelling alone across the country and thinking about Amelia Earhart and her solo journeys and finding some connection in all that. So good. Open tuning and incredible lyrics.

Guitar solo by the great Pat Metheny and keyboards by the late great Lyle Mays. Those two are like icing on the cake of an already amazing song.

I have seen Lloyds House a few times now and leave every time feeling like I have seen something special. Hard to put my finger on it but it hits me in the gut live. Have seen a lot of good bands over the last few years and would recommend seeing them near the top, the last single "Ribbons" is great.

They are also the band I consistently get the worst photos of 🤷 Going to blame it on not being able to concentrate.
