Ende letzter Woche fand unsere monatliche Runde Arkham Horror LCG statt.
Mitspieler lacht sich schlapp: "Also... Schlüsselanhänger?" 🤣

Blackwood was Inspirer of #Lovecraft & #Tolkein, each of whom borrowed from his work. He has been called the “Holy Man of #Supernatural #Fiction,” the “Sherlock Holmes of #Ghost Land,” & “Laureate of the #Occult”
This week on Deep Cuts in a Lovecraftian Vein, we have a very special entry into the Her Letters To Lovecraft series: the Christmas Greetings poems that Lovecraft sent to the women in his life.
"the rats in the walls" by #lovecraft is a "good" read, but why i gotta read it at this hour
i'm gonna rinse with some kpop
Robert E. Howard conoce a Novalyne Price.
Here's a yarn I wrote some time ago about a con man faced with his ultimate mark - a Lovecraftian god looking to consume his soul.
The Dunwich Horror illustrated book is now up on free league publishing's site, and it looks beautiful!
Within the depths of the cosmic abyss, Spongebob's form distorts and contorts, his once cheerful countenance now twisted into an otherworldly visage. As his tentacled appendages writhe and his voice echoes with an unsettling resonance, the denizens of Bikini Bottom tremble in fear, for their beloved sponge has transcended into an ancient and unknowable deity, forever altering their reality.
The Shuttered Room and Other Tales of Horror by H. P. Lovecraft and August Derleth
1973 Reprint of the 1970 Panther edition. My own copy.
Yet another edition I solely keep as an artifact of horror because it 100% useless with regard to Lovecraft—these tales were “unfinished on Lovecraft's death and completed by his friend and fellow fantasy writer, August Derleth.”
Besides the word “friend” doing some heavy lifting here […]
Shadow in the Desert (1)
Two minutes at most. The Thing was about a mile behind him but moving faster. Two minutes to live and think. But Howard already knew: What a lousy idea to cover the desert with solar panels just because "no one" lived there! And no, they shouldn’t have entered the ancient temple. And never even think of levelling it for a solar farm!
One more minute. In the dusty clouds, he could discern a silhouette. The camp.
Lovecraft's "The Horror at Martin's Beach" was written in collaboration with his then-future wife and is a true banger - Imagine a 1920s version of Jaws that ends on a note of absolute psychological terror #horror #lovecraft https://tasker.land/2023/11/30/on-the-horror-at-martins-beach-by-sonia-h-greene-and-hp-lovecraft/
After the Great Darkness of 1999, air travel underwent a significant transformation. The economic and infrastructural collapse made it unsustainable for airlines to operate jets, and there were mysterious disappearances of those still in the air. Consequently, Zeppelins became the primary mode of air travel. Amidst this shift, legends arose about a Black Zeppelin, a supposed harbinger of disaster. Sightings of this ominous airship are said to predict doom, with pilots reporting engine failures, unexpected mutinies, and other bizarre incidents leading to zeppelin crashes. Despite these tales, many dismiss the Black Zeppelin as a myth, a product of pilot superstition.
Deep Cuts in a Lovecraftian Vein Midweek Special: "Wife to Mr. Lovecraft" (2017) by Lucy Sussex, where we ruminate on Sonia H. Greene in fiction and art.
Unfortunately, I have to mark the Kindle version of this down to 1 star due to the horrible job whoever was in charge of converting the manga to epub did for it. They either used a very cheap scanner, or the cheapest OCR software they could find, or possibly both - there are pages and pages where the artifacts from scanning are so obvious and so distracting that I wonder how in the world this got past an editor's desk.
The Noxxites, sometimes derogatorily referred to as "Dark Hats," inhabit the city of Nighthead. Their beliefs remain a mystery, though it's commonly speculated that they hold some form of reverence for darkness. Nighthead is the epicenter of the nocturnalist movement, which advocates for nocturnal lifestyles rather than diurnal ones. The Noxxites are generally disliked by mainstream society, who often associate them with the Great Darkness event of 1999. Despite this negative perception, the Dark Hats appear indifferent and continue their enigmatic practices. These include their peculiar devotion to darkness and frequent visits to the local obscuruum, known as the Pyramid of Noxx.
This month's Her Letters to Lovecraft focuses on Edna "Vondy" Hyde McDonald - one of Lovecraft's peers in amateur journalism.
In the mysterious city of New Victoria, tales swirl about a sinister mareling, rumored to be composed entirely of snakes. This eerie creature allegedly lurks in the city's shadowy nooks and crannies, slithering through its dim alleyways. According to some, it resembles a mass of hundreds of snakes, twisted into a humanoid form—a writhing, serpent-filled amalgamation. Others whisper about encounters with a colossal cobra-like being, silently gliding through the city's deserted areas, devouring anyone unfortunate enough to cross its path.

The Beach of Ebon is a legendary shore that some individuals have claimed to visit. Access to this beach is reportedly unpredictable; some allege to have stumbled upon it after dozing off on a typical beach, awakening on an unfamiliar stretch of black sand, while others recount diving into the ocean and surfacing to encounter a darkened coast. There are also tales of sailors who have chanced upon it amid their voyages. The beach is characterized by its ebony sands and towering gothic sand castles, said to house enigmatic yet indifferent beings. Descriptions include surreal vistas beyond the beach and otherworldly creatures luxuriating under a dark sun. Nevertheless, these accounts remain unverified, casting the Beach of Ebon as a fantastical legend of a twilight realm.

The Library of Unwritten Books, an Obscuruum uncovered after the Darkness of 1999, houses a vast collection of books detailing histories that never transpired. Intriguingly, these books contain genuine photos. Even more perplexing, some artifacts referenced in the books have been found, presenting a paradox. Scientists remain baffled by these contradictions.

The Other-Sided are interdimensional beings dwelling at the crossroads of the Great Below and our known reality. Their distinguishing characteristic is their summoning through mirrors, which serve as gateways. These mirrors allow humans to glimpse or even exchange places with their Other-Sided, darker selves. When such a switch transpires, the result is a grotesque entity from sunless depths. Notably, the being's presence in our world depends on its continuous reflection in the mirror. These creatures sometimes dwell in houses made of mirrors so they might maintain their presence.

The Coffin of Iver's Green, an Obscurum, was unearthed in the quaint hamlet of Suttercraft. This town harbors countless black coffins beneath its earth, yet the Coffin of Iver's Green is the most largest to rest in its accursed ground. Utilizing ultrasonic technology, scholars have fetermined that the Coffin's dimensions span the entire breadth and length of Suttercraft. The contents of the Coffin, though, remain unknown. However, many citizens claim to have horrible dreams of the thing in the colossal casket, causing them unparalleled dread.

The Angel of Gold and Greed is a member of the Noctrait and has manifested in diverse locales worldwide. This angel typically emerges above corporations and wealthy neighborhoods, particularly where corruption and excessive greed are rampant. Reports also indicate sightings alongside influential magnates—corporate CEOs, tycoons, and software entrepreneurs. Adorned in gold, the angel is said to display wings crafted from dollar bills.

The chapel of a mysterious faith was uncovered in a recently discovered region of Canada. Although details are scant, the religion centers on transcending death through a form of metamorphosis. Intriguingly, the site contained human-sized funerary eggs and cocoons, cracked open as if something had emerged from them. Despite extensive inquiries and anthropological studies, little is understood about this religion.

While the Scream Eaters present a frightening visage, they are not combatants by nature. As with many entities that traverse the shadowy realms, they encounter numerous adversaries, including other walks of darkness. Consequently, Scream Eaters are commonly safeguarded by "Inflictors"—a warrior caste within their own ranks skilled in martial tactics. These guardians defend the enclaves of the Scream Eaters and are unleashed against any who threaten their kin. Inflictors harness pain as a weapon, both consuming and dispensing it through various methods.

Rumors persist that the government, or mysterious groups influencing it, have intercepted odd signals from the defunct satellites still circling Earth. After the Great Darkness, these satellites became unmanageable relics. Yet, there are whispers of eerie images they sporadically transmit—unnerving visuals of colossal entities hovering in orbit. While concrete information is scarce, a few accounts suggest these figures are of enormous scale, overshadowing the planet. Nonetheless, such reports are generally dismissed as post-noctum urban myths or legends.

Well I guess I've been here for a bit, should do one o' them #introduction posts or something so here goes:
I am a gigantic fucking #nerd/#geek. Expect any kind of random topic. #gaming? Been playing #games for 30+ years now. #Comics? Absolutely. Not so much DC, but anything #Marvel or damned near any other company.
Aside from that, I'm #Canadian, a #millenial, have a deep seething hatred for 99% of humanity and commit myself to daily rituals to try and assist with the waking of ancient eldritch beings to hopefully come end us all. I also #bake a lot and love cookies.
H.P. Lovecraft's poem Hallowe'en in a Suburb was first published in a small press publication in 1926 then in Lovecraft's second posthumous Arkham House collection in 1943. For the reprint in the September, 1952 issue of Weird Tales editor D. Mcllwraith asked Virgil Finlay for an appropriate illustration. #FinlayFriday

Metal Fossil Guru MATS E. ERIKSSON Releases New Book Death: The Antidote To Misery
...a wonderfully weird new book titled Death: The Antidote To Misery. ...tales that straddle several different literary genres. Some might call it Lovecraftian prose, others strange fiction, and yet others might refer...
@CactuarJoe the malleable narrator/sidekick is quite the #Lovecraft trope, though. Very much shows up throughout his work. In Reanimator in particular, the unnamed narrator spends pretty much his whole medical career being at once horrified and seduced by West, even following him to the front line in WWI and moving to Boston with him to set up a new practice after the war.
This bit in #Reanimator1985 involving a headless, reanimated scientist that understands what's going on, and who holds dominion over other victims, and has a false head to disguise his decapitatedness, is straight from #Lovecraft's original story; namely, part 6, "The Tomb Legions."
If you look past the repetitive beginnings, I would argue that Herbert West -- Reanimator is really pretty groundbreaking in gothic science fiction. It's superficially similar to Frankenstein of course, but recall that Frankenstein's monster was assembled from parts, where West is reanimating whole corpses (and parts of corpses!) with science.
So tonight's #Monsterdon is a #Lovecraft special - first published as a six-part series in 1922 in the amateur magazine, "Home Brew," it was Lovecraft's first paid work as an author. It's also the first story of Lovecraft's that mentions both the city of #Arkham and the campus of Miskatonic University.
I have been done with modern #Batman comics for a while, but this might drag me back. Batman and #Lovecraft is a perfect combination.
"It's always the same -- some twat climbs out of a hell, or he gets resurrected because someone bled on the floor of the attic where he was sacrificed, or his latest orphan runs out of organs, and boom, he's noncing around town looking for a victim.
"So now you're making a mess all over the street, there are people shouting about the noise, and firing this drone at full power costs £200 a second.
"But do you think about that? No, you only think about yourself."
-- Daisy Makwetu, Hacker and Drone Pilot, Swansea, 2086
In HDSF news, I'm working on a connected series of important entries, but meanwhile, here's one for "Cthulhu Mythos", for all of you #Lovecraft fans. First recorded in 1942, from (no surprise) August Derleth.
One of the most original take on Lovecraftian music I’ve heard, and in my opinion one of the most successful. When we talk about Lovecraft influence on music it’s most of the time in the Metal genre, but here Reuben Bradley infuse it into jazz. And of the best kind ! Tracks like The Price We Pay, In His House of R’Lyeh or Shadow Out of Time never cease to ravish me !

Hey hey, finally kicked this out the door: Episode 40 of Podsothoth: A #Lovecraft Book Club, the discussion of #TheShunnedHouse, as recorded last week in Shreveport, LA! Enjoy directly here, or in your favorite podcast player. Or YouTube? I don't know if I'm going to continue that experiment. You tell me, but I don't really like the YouTube faux-podcast experience. Feels very embrace-and-extend-and-extinguish.
@ksaj I spend a fairly significant fraction of my time with #Lovecraft stuff. Namely, I run a podcast about Lovecraft fiction which you can follow at @podsothoth and I publish pretty much whenever we get around to it. I also run an in person #CallofCthulhu #ttrpg with a bunch of other nerds as PCs and NPCs, which is fairly monster-of-the-week style (but we only play like once a month).
Started podcasting, and TTRPGing (over Zoom originally) during pandemic, when I realized I had literally no hobbies outside of infosec/software.
It has been overdue for a long time, but finally, here is my #introduction post.
I’m a dad (with the associated jokes and humour) working as a #dev around Bordeaux in France.
I mainly reboost, answer often, and sometimes I do post about #music (to listen or to play #Bass #guitar #saxophone ), about #technology, and about #SF and #Fantasy (be it #book , #Comics , #movie , #series , #rpg ).
And in this theme I am especially receptive about #CosmicHorror and Lovecraft. (Some would even say I am slightly obsessed about it).
I mainly write in #french but I interact just as much in #english .
I used to write some #fiction for my own pleasure, but nowadays I prioritize making music and #photography (you can find my pixelfed account in my profile page).
Has anyone listened to #TheMagnusArchives? It's a #horror #anthology #AudioDrama from Rusty Quill. Every episode is excellently written, and I think the overarching story is one of the best pieces of long-form #storytelling on the internet.
#365Stories in 2023 - 228/365
"Shoggoth's Old Peculiar" (1998)
by Neil Gaiman
Ben Lassiter, a Texan, embarks on a walking tour of the British coastline. He ends up in a town called Innsmouth, where two strange men, awaiting the coming of Cthulhu, explain the connection to an American town of the same name, written about by H.P. Lovecraft.
Gaiman pokes gentle fun at Lovecraft and British cuisine in this story of a vacation gone horribly awry.
Virgil Finlay illustration for the 1919 H.P. Lovecraft story "Beyond the Wall of Sleep" for it's reprint appearance in the March, 1938 issue of Weird Tales. It was later inscribed and gifted to another giant, "To A. Merritt, a master of fantasy. From Virgil Finlay"
#365Stories in 2023 - 215/365
"Jeroboam Henley's Debt" (1982)
by Charles R. Saunders
Jeremiah learns that his late grandfather betrayed fellow freedom seekers on the Underground Railroad, and was cursed by his final victim. Fearful that his discovery has awakened the dead, he reaches out to a friend for help.
Beyond the imaginary horrors, Saunders touches on slavery and racism; one of the earliest examples I've seen in Lovecraftian pastiche.
SFW - Noir, 1920s Lovecraft Inspired
Wright leaned back against the car as the sound of approaching engines grew louder.
Headlights from another car Illuminated him as other agents arrived, along with local police, the sheriff, and a platoon of soldiers.
He turned his head to look at the crumbling, rotten little town of Innsmouth.
The Circus was about to begin…
Just finished reading my (somewhat travel battered and tropical humidity-bent) copy of 'Shadows Over Baker Street', an anthology of "Sherlock Holmes meets the Cthulhu Mythos:" short stories.
I'd previously only read the @neilhimself piece, 'A Study in Emerald', but enjoyed all 18 stories contained herein to varying degrees; the Elder Gods and Co. generally mesh very effectively with the gaslit Victorian world of Holmes and Watson.
@gbhnews @azita Innsmouth is the fictional Massachusetts town and setting for HP #Lovecraft's classic (but, as ever, ethically dodgy), "The Shadow Over Innsmouth." It can be read here:
"It was a terrible, indescribable thing vaster than any subway train—a shapeless congeries of protoplasmic bubbles, faintly self-luminous, and with myriads of temporary eyes forming and un-forming as pustules of greenish light all over the tunnel-filling front that bore down upon us, crushing the frantic penguins and slithering over the glistening floor that it and its kind had swept so evilly free of all litter."
— H. P. Lovecraft, At the Mountains of Madness
Anyone got cool mer-/fish-folk inspirational art?
The Deep Ones in #TheInnsmouthLook have radically different appearances based on their personalities and the way they interact with the ocean, so all sorts of inspirations are great.
My favorites so far: Ursula, the Gill-man from "The Creature From the Black Lagoon," the similar character from "The She-Creature," Doug Jones' characters in "Hellboy" and "The Shape of Water," and Melissa Benson #mtg art.
