👀 One of the new sections of my site is up. Some bugs and problems still need to be ironed out but I like it.

I also decided to make a post for what I did during #MARCHintosh and post it in the new section which can be found here: https://sinclair-speccy.github.io/The-Mainframe/Server-Rack/Other-Nerdy-Stuff/MARCHintosh.html

@billgoats It’s been a couple months since I’ve touched #Macstodon (after burning out a bit from the #MARCHintosh blitz), but I haven’t forgotten about it. There’s still an outstanding bug that needs to be fixed, and I’d also like to try adding some rudimentary Calckey support if it’s not too difficult. I’ll get back to it soon.

And an update after much time has passed! This lost Mac SE logic board now has a custom case that connects it to a modern ATX power supply and breaks the video signal out to an RGB2HDMI. With a BlueSCSI connected it now fully works as a minitower/desktop version of a Compact Mac

Success!! 🎉

Well kinda… I had no luck with the memory, but I think there is something funky with the middle slot. It doesn’t like any of the 512MB sticks I’ve got, but it has no problem with the 128MB one. Mmmh 🤔 I think I have to call it now, not gonna play the memory lottery again 😬 1152MB is still a respectable amount for this machine, and the graphic card is a hell of an upgrade!

Yet another #Marchintosh follow-up: I’ve received a new 512MB bank and the flashed GeForce 6200. I’ve picked up the latter on eBay and from the look of it it seems like a new old stock PNY freshly flashed with Apple compatible firmware. Will try it out later🤞🏻

It's a bit late for #MARCHintosh, I know - I mean, I only ordered the laptop bag in April - but it's all a continuation of the same story.

Just managed to fit in the laptop, the mains adapter, the floppy drive and dock adapter, the discs, and the manual.

#Marchintosh UPDATE:

- The SSD upgrade went smoothly (besides the fact the cable management is so tight I had to leave it dangling. #yolo

- One of the memory banks I’ve got didn’t work, so it’s “only” 1152MB until I find a working 512MB one

- the ATI 9600 doesn’t fit without relocating the VRM, and I didn’t want to do that. Instead, I ordered a flashed GeForce 6200 256MB 🤞🏻

It’s going to possibly be the most powerful fanless Cube setup, if I can pull that off.

"NDrv Man", a tool to extract the graphics driver from a Voodoo graphics card ROM in order to use it in OS X

Back in the day, I used this to get my Voodoo3 working in OS X 10.1, which otherwise was impossible

Could this be? Another release of Raiders of the Lost Icon?!?
Will #MARCHintosh never end?

Some quality of life improvements: you can now navigate the giant collection of icons with your keyboard (with Pg Up, Pg Down, Home and End) and the bookmarks file has disappeared!
RotLI now keeps track of your bookmarks automatically for you. If you have an existing bookmarks file, drag it to the window and RotLI will merge it in the new functionality. Less hassle!

I’ve enjoyed #MARCHintosh and found a lot of Mac geeks there, but it just reminds me of throwing away so much! I worked in a newspaper company, it was all Mac (the Mac had the market back then) but when we inevitably moved to PC, I remember throwing dozens of Mac SE’s, Mac Classic II, Quadras, SE/30s, IIcx, LCs, iMacs (colour ones) and eMacs, into the back of a recycling van. And there were probably lots of other ones I can’t even remember. If I was doing it now, I’d take so many home!

Icon friends! #MARCHintosh may be behind us, but Raiders of the Lost Icon keeps receiving updates!

This time, it has learned how to export your icons as DAE (Collada) files for 3D modeling.

You can now also add a coordinates overlay to your images (thanks for the suggestion, @billgoats !).
This should simplify the task of turning icons into knitting projects, tiles for your patio or LEGO models!

Ok, now my #MARCHintosh project is officially done - all four serial ports of my CSI Hurdler II 4-port NuBus Card are now fully working! Despite this being NOS, it was DOA. After cleaning and reseating the IC's, recapping it and installing a new voltage regulator, and reflowing almost all the solder joints, it works! The version of Hermes II BBS that I'm running is unregistered and will only run for one month, so get on The Crow's Nest BBS while you can - crowsnestbbs.ddns.net ports 6400-6505.

here is my (very late) contribution for #MARCHintosh !!!

back in October 2022, I got a Macintosh LC III that was fully recapped for a fairly good deal. a couple of months and three DB15 to VGA adapters later, I've finally been able to properly use this computer and it has been really fun to use for sure!!

i wrote a blog post/article about it and the sort of "backstory' about this computer on my website, if you're interested: https://alextuckey.github.io/blog/full/2023-03_marchintosh.html

LC III set up at the far corner of a desk turned on an connected to a 22 inch BenQ 1080p monitor, displaying System 7.5 with some folders on the hard drive open. The logo for MARCHintosh is added to this picture, which consists of a Happy Mac icon (from older Macintosh) with the Apple rainbow stripe and a pixel shamrock next to it. Below that is text in the Chicago font with the MARCHintosh hashtag.

Squeaking in right under the #Marchintosh wire here, I wired up the IIsi ATX adapter. I really wanted this slim PSU to work, because it's small enough to fit inside the IIsi PSU case and look original, but the 0.3 amps on the -12 just wouldn't power it up. I'll have to find another one to make that plan work. In the meantime it's getting a little life support from this Core2Quad. 0.8 amps @ -12 does the job. Benchmarks check out, smoked by an LC III. IIsi power and I love it!

In the waning moments of #MARCHintosh, I have sadly not reached my goal of refurbishing the SE/30 I found in a tech recycling dumpster.
I partially took it apart (and broke off a capacitor. whoops), and thankfully the battery hadn’t exploded yet! There’s a lot of other capacitor goo covering the board, but nothing that looks fatal…yet. Basic cleaning done. Still gotta do more deep scrubbing and order some replacement caps all around…

@dec_hl welcome to the vintage Macintosh community! And happy #MARCHintosh!

I highly recommend a BlueSCSI. It is IMHO the least expensive and easiest to use alternative. You can obtain all of the software you need in ready made images ready for use. Just copy them to the SD card for the BlueSCSI. Ron’s Computer Videos on YouTube (others as well) have videos for setting up. You can also download software in SIT files from macintoshgarden.org.

I warned you. When I joined the server, I told you my #MARCHintosh project would be MONSTROUS. So, may I present, the Woodgrain Mac Mini G4.

Long ago, this very machine hosted my personal blog using OS X Leopard Server. The acrylic top was yellowed and scratched, so I decided to replace it, LGR-style.

It's upgraded it with the same mSATA to IDE enclosure @ActionRetro found on Amazon, with it a fresh install of Leopard Server. The bamboo peripherals (also Amazon) were the perfect accoutrements.

Let’s make an adventure game together in World Builder! This Friday at 8PM EDT. https://www.twitch.tv/robotspacer #MARCHintosh

Hi! I’m robotspacer, and this is World Builder. It was created by William C. Appleton in 1984 for one of the first point-and-click adventure games, Enchanted Scepters. It was released in 1986 by Silicon Beach Software so anyone could make games easily on a Macintosh. On Friday I’m going to make a game with it live on stream, and you can help create it! I’ll ask for suggestions for scenes, objects, characters. I’ll draw the artwork, I’ll write the code, and we’ll make a little adventure game together. I hope you can join me!

For #MARCHintosh this year I’m launching https://infinitemac.org. It features runnable versions of almost every classic System Software/Mac OS release, from 1984’s System 1.0 to 2000’s Mac OS 9.0.4.

This involved porting another emulator to the web (Mini vMac), tracking down 35 install disks, and the usual fighting with file systems. The blog post at https://blog.persistent.info/2023/03/infinitemac-dot-org.html has more details.

After a lot of fighting with the linker in Retro68 I rebuilt my temperature converter application in #Rust. As with the Nim version, the C code is currently dealing with the toolbox calls and Rust handles parsing the strings, doing the calculation, stringifying the result, and writing it back out.

The Rust version is a bit better than the Nim one as it avoids allocation of intermediate strings and some copying of data.

Code is on GitHub: https://github.com/wezm/classic-mac-rust
