(1/2) Having lots of "fun" with my Behringer #xtouch controllers today. My new (Zen 4) laptop won't work with them on USB. In the end upgraded the main X-Touch to 1.22 via MIDI DIN sockets. The two X-Touch Extenders don't have DIN sockets though. In the end I had to use my old (Intel 6th Gen) laptop, install Cakewalk by Bandlab, enable WinRT #MIDI mode for Cakewalk to see the device at all, then send the v1.22 sysex file using Cakewalk, and at the end of it my firmware was finally...

@argv_minus_one It isn't the #midi end that's failing. It's #sound output that's failing.

There's dozens, even hundreds, of #linux programs in the #debian repo that have no problem *reading a midi file*.

Only a couple can actually *make noise happen*.

This isn't a "does not support midi" problem. It's a "sound system is fundamentally broken" problem.

I've been working as a #software #engineer for 30 years. I have been using #linux at home since 1997 and at work since 2001. I've compiled kernels. I've contributed patches to #opensource

I do not understand why my #sound cannot Just Work.

Why do I have to "kill #pulseaudio" to get #midi devices to connect to #alsa? WTF does that even mean?

A lot of programs (#musescore, #bitwig, etc) can figure this out. Why do the rest require helpful-but-should-be-redundant guides:

Finished up my changes to my MidiSID. Added a side switch for power, and increased the angle of the display. It now lives next to the MT-32 in the MIDI mole-hill, and I feel like this stack is ready to ride again on a stream when time allows.

It's the one thing I always used to hear as an Amiga owner that the Atari ST was better at than the miggy and how it was used by bands because of the built-in midi. Very neat to see it being demonstrated here.

I feel Andy's little aside at the end about it 'not being creative' and the poor guy giving an unsure no is a wee bit mean and shows some radio background snobbery. ;o;

Just spent a fruitful time recovering an #archive of #tunes I recorded in a #bygone age of #Atari 1040 running #Cubase #MIDI only synced to an #Akai rackmount multitrack.

I think I will release them! Better stuff than I thought!

Fave #plan right now is to release them as 'singles' with a #refurbished so to speak A side and the original from the archive on the B side.

When they're all done will release them on an album together, the title of which is 'so cunning' that I am not telling! 😁

This is compiled from multiple sources. The #guitar chords come from an amalgamation of play-along videos (where the chord is the open fingering played with a capo on the first fret) modified by me to things I can reasonably play

The #piano part is only there because #MuseScore needs to attach lyrics to something. So I'm transposing an existing piano arrangement to this (apparent) key

#MuseScore can play #midi. Playing along (w/o capo) sounds great!

This was the first DAWish software I tried. I managed to play back a midi of The Christmas Song (Charlie Brown, Vince Guaraldi Trio). I had a Casio keyboard and an FB-01 FM synth.
I think I saw the potential for generative music, but there was no YouTube at the time to provide concrete examples.

I have published this project to Printables. I'm pretty pleased with the way it came out.

I got some better PETG colors: a generic white and Prusament Ultramarine Blue Transparent. The other photo below is the PLA version I did. It's MatterHackers PRO Series Merlot (and white).

Now I need a lot more MIDI cables. And a few more MIDI devices.

can anyone advise? I had a nice #windows app for letting me use #soundfonts as default #MIDI output rather than the Microsoft builtin rubbish. It was free and #accessible and now I can't even remember what it was called. Is anyone using anything like that compatible with a #ScreenReader

Optima was too ambitious. I switched the lettering to Gill Sans and increased the size, and the second one (orange) came out great.

There must have been a grease spot on the printer bed near the "one" label. The green one looks smaller because it's only 3mm tall. The orange one is the full cover at ~22mm tall.

If I'm going to print this in PET-G, I'll need some better filament colors. I'll try PLA first.

Is there by any chance a piece of #Music software I could put on a #RaspberryPi that lets me:

* Connect a #Midi keyboard and use as an electric piano;

* Do *simple* sequencing and playback - not a full #DAW but just let me record and edit a piano sequence; then add another voice, or let me play live over that sequence.

* As a bonus, possibly let me record a live track, but that's not really needed.

Basically a tool to help me better learn #MusicTheory and practice a live #instrument .
