Last #sunset in #Maine. It’s … um … interesting.

Overcast sky, a strip of dark land, a strip of grey water, a strip of low flat dark rocky island, grey water. The sun is a tiny pale orange disk in the sky, with a pale orange streak below it that is its reflection in the water.

We are standing on the bank of a wide but shallow river beneath a deep blue cloudless sky. There are many gray rocks and boulders along the banks and projecting out if the water. Much of the near bank and river are in shade. Everything else is drenched in sunshine. Both banks are wooded, a mix of evergreens and hardwoods. The hardwoods are sporting foliage of reds, golds, oranges and bright light greens.

Bright sunshine with a few puffy clouds. We see only the portion of the sky right above the horizon, so it is a rather light blue. Standing atop a mountain on rugged cliffs of fractured dark gray rock. A few leafy ground-hugging shrubs in brick red and maroon autumn colors grow out of the rocks. The mountainside below us is covered with dark green spruce and fir trees with some hardwoods sporting orange and gold leaves mixed in. On a plateau a few hundred feet below is a large mountain pond reflecting the otherwise unseen deep blue of the September Maine sky above. Beyond the plateau is a country of rugged mountains and valleys. The plateau and those mountains and valleys are all predominantly the deep green of the spruce-fir forest with a few hardwoods beginning to show colors mixed in.

Bar Harbor has three things on every restaurant menu: clam chowder, lobster (rolls, Mac and cheese or quesadillas) and blueberry pie. I like -- but am not obsessed with -- clam chowder. It's been a decade since I had a lobster roll and I just checked again. You really can't give me lobster. It's a bit of a flavor and and a bunch of a texture thing. Unless someone has a reason for me to try again I'm definitely not interested in paying 25 bucks for it. I will, however, be sampling every blueberry pie in town. #maine #food #downeast

The lake is an even deeper blue, a fresh breeze is chopping its surface, small waves are breaking along the shore. Dry weather has left much lakebed exposed, creating a shoreline of light gray gravel, rocks and boulders. There is a great deal of bleached white driftwood piled up at the normal waterline up against the edge of a lush forest. Color photo of a lighthouse at sunset. The light keeper's residence is a Victorian structure to the right. A flag pole is near center frame surrounded by green grass. The actual lighthouse, light, is to the left. It is small, ~30 feet high, compared to most lighthouses. And it is accessed by a long white-painted wooden bridge.

Why you should tell your children about vanishing #fireflies

I’ll be telling my son stories about the wild lives that existed in the places we go before anyone thought to call them “Maine” or “California.” If he won’t inherit an ecosystem with all its parts, he’ll have a shot at reassembly.

Advice by Michael J. Coren, August 29, 2023

"The #PenobscotNation is among the oldest continuous governments in the world. Some of its members still recall stories of Atlantic salmon filling #Maine’s rivers and of alewife, or river herring, swimming upriver by the uncounted millions, says Chuck Loring Jr., the Penobscot Nation’s director of natural resources. Last year, fewer than 1,400 salmon returned to the state.

"Loring, who manages forests, game and fisheries across 121,000 acres, doesn’t think in decades in his work. He looks back centuries. 'We have a seven-generation approach,' he says. Unlike most commercial timber harvesters, he’s aiming to create an old-growth forest like those that existed hundreds of years ago across Maine but now cover only 0.05 percent of the state.

"Instead of cutting trees every 30 to 40 years, Loring plans to grow them for a century or more. And he’s not optimizing for wood. 'We’re one of the biggest timber tribes,' says Loring, 'but the most highly regarded goal is water quality.'

"For the #Penobscot, the goal is restoring a landscape and its inhabitants’ place in it — from fish to moose to future members of the Penobscot Nation. 'That’s one of our goals getting into the school, and talking about everything we do,' says Loring. 'The tribe has made ensuring a viable forest in the future the priority, even if we’re not generating income from the forest.'

When classes resume after Labor Day, Amber Lightfeather won’t have to worry about where her children’s next meals will be coming from. They’ll be free.

#Minnesota, #NewMexico, #Colorado, #Vermont, #Michigan, and #Massachusetts will make school breakfasts and lunches permanently free to all students starting this academic year, regardless of family income, following in the footsteps of #California and #Maine. Several other states are considering similar changes and congressional supporters want to extend free meals to all kids nationwide.
