1) A friend helped me troubleshoot my 3D printer and the fix seems somewhat easy assuming it works. Ordered the part and it should be here Sunday.
2) very nice weather last night.
3) It was really nice hanging out at the #makerspace last evening. I really needed the friend interaction.
My local #makerspace, @AHA, had our CNC router setup to draw line art portraits at a local event today.
We're *very* close to finishing the #darkroom at @leigh_hackspace. We've been fitting the light lock this week, keeping the darkness from leaking out. Big thanks to the build team that have been working on this all week.
Two doors - one for general access, and the second for maintenance use. Second internal barrier is by curtain.
It's been getting increasingly darker as we've been building this. Which is ... good? More plasterboard, some electrics, seal the roof and ceiling and then PAINT ALL THE THINGS.

Day 1 of classes was fine yesterday - just fine - but I'm ready to put the first day behind me and get to the fun stuff.
Today's a full day of everything: fiddling with some equipment in the #Makerspace, a meeting to help plan a community workshop on digitization of documents, my own class prep, and hoping to make progress on some text reuse fun working with sermons from EEBO (!).

It's not a mirage.
Hot off the press, @leigh_hackspace has running water.
So, we've been having the plumbing installed at @leigh_hackspace and that's given me a bit of spare time to work on a small side project. This is a Pentium III laptop running Windows 98SE. It's a rather nice machine with one foot in all worlds. CD-ROM, Floppy, USB 1, Serial, 98SE and a good (late) DOS mode.
I've done some work on it's DOS side and it's now a nice little playing machine for later games that aren't too CPU picky.
I've also added my MT32-Pi using a RS232-USB cable and a nice pair of Altec Lansing speakers. SoftMPU over serial works great where it's supported. Monkey Island and Frontier work, First Encounters does not, but First Encounters works fine on plain Sound Blaster.
This is now a nice little toy for downtime. 🙂

Thanks for the challenge. I've learned that for myself, sewing doesn't fit easily into little pockets of time/space. I need a few hours of time and a generous physical area in order to work my way through a project. Fortunately, I've been able to find this with classes, retreats, #SewDays, and the #makerspace at my public library.

Hello! I have a question for people running smallish makerspaces in the UK - like, a big room with several tables in?
How much (approx, ballpark) do you spend on consumables per month? (Refreshments, 3D printer filament, woodworking bits, any other supplies.)
Also how many members do you have?
I'm asking because we're applying for a grant to cover running costs and we're being asked for an estimate of what we expect to spend, but we don't yet have premises. We'd be allowing members to use e.g. filament, tea bags, etc. for free, if we get the grant. So I do need to know how much it costs in the first place, even though you probably usually do get it covered by people buying/donating for what they use in most hackspaces!

Hello! This is an appeal for photos of makerspaces/hackspaces.
I'm part of a group trying to establish a local makerspace, and we're applying for grants, and part of that involves showing the grant people what a makerspace actually looks like.
Are you able to take a photo of the inside of your makerspace, share it with us, and give us permission to use it in our grant application?
Good stuff to see: 3D printers, sewing machines, woodworking equipment, comfy seating areas with kettles and microwaves, and basically anything else!
I'm got several experiments going toward including non-book "reads"/scholarship in the same visibility, amplification, browsability, and community building efforts as print book collections/displays.
E.g. DH projects, blog posts, games, zines, etc., as part of @scholarslab's larger working library.
For our group's #ACH2023 session, I finished one of these prototypes!
It is an excellent day: just got word that I have funding for my #textiles #makerspace student staff next year! 🥳
