All great #music folks to follow! Talented #musicians who are always up to something interesting, and always into talking about #MakingMusic in an interesting and helpful way.
random revelation (that should have been obvious) - much as I love highly structure music (dance, etc) it's not what I like making at all and I should stop trying :-) or for that matter buying anything called a 'groove box' because fun as they are non of the ones I have ever get used to make anything.
the one exception interestingly is the Syntakt - which I *can* get what I want out of
That's about it, this one was done after that. (Well, after all the effects and stuff -- I should maybe get into my effects more in detail at some point.)
Like I said, probably my favorite of the album. I love the atmosphere, sounds, that riff, the samples, everything. Oh, and the art! LMAO. You've seen it, sort of, because a big part of this image went into the album cover.

During the #Production phase this got a few #pads from the #KawaiK4r and a selection of #samples, from my #vinyl sampling in #PreProduction; some #Morphagene bits I had floating around; and a few horror movie samples to pull it together.
For one thing, that main lead line/repeating riff is just killer. I actually have a bunch of cool unused variations of it because I couldn't bring myself to use too many in the face of the perfection of the main riff LOL. Again, that's #MicroFreak thru #Echorec, the two stars of this #production for sure (and the Freak is one of the two MVPs of the album).

Listening to the isolated stems as I was recording into the MPC... π hoo boy some of those were rough LMAO. But I cut the whole thing up and managed to put the best bits together into what, for me, is a very compelling track.
I was sorely tempted to just release it as it was! (Honestly, I should go back and listen to the multitrack again and see if it is releasing the "jam version" of the song as bonus track or something.) But I decided to try further cutting and polishing it and then actually ended up hacking it to bits in the #MPC and rebuilding the whole thing from scratch.
After I recorded that, I went back and recorded additional layers; most crucially I played #bass through the #Catalinbread #Echorec. (This replaced the MiniBrute bass that worked well enough for the jam but I never loved). I also played another #MicroFreak patch through the same delay pedal. At this point I was *very* infatuated with this jam.

This one started as a jam based around the main repeating melodic sequence. That was played on the #Arturia #MicroFreak. The #MiniBrute2s joined on bass if memory serves, while the #DrumBruteImpact handled drum duties. I recorded a jam of ten minutes or so with this setup as a multitrack on my #Tascam Model 12.

We're in the home stretch of this #ProductionDiary for my album #PsychedelicGhostStories. We're on track 6, the title track, "Psychedelic Ghost Story." This is probably my favorite tracks of the album (not really a coincidence it got the nod for the album title).

We're covering it together if you're interested. All ages, genres, skill levels, and types of musicians included.
Anyone a #ExperimentalMusician #selftaughtmusician #MultiInstrumentalist with advice or opinions?
Who's in?
π§ #GrooveArmada's "Superstylin" clip opens with Tom and Andy talking (seriously) about making music, beats that go out into the Universe(s). That came immediately to mind when I saw this film (by #Numero6) for #TheSupermenLovers' "Starlight" last night. It was made in 2001, but I'd never seen it.

And that's about it on this one. It's gotten a comparison to Tangerine Dream, which was nice. I hope you like it!
This one got recorded third overall. Basically after sweating my way through the first two tracks, finally feeling like it was starting to click about the time I finished track 2, it seemed like a good time to do something different/weird and, relatively speaking, easier to create. And it was! This was a breeze to put together and I like the way it came out.
I did cut it down (I think I basically edited about three minutes out of the middle) a bit, apply a touch of distortion, EQ and reverb to "finish" it and then it got mastered at the end. That's it! It was a nice break.
The patch I used was pretty simple, just Morphagene into the Disting EX looper, out to some effects (FX Aid and Desmodus Versio). The I just played it live, in real time, recording sequences into the looper, setting them to loop ,a and adding layers. I did one practice performance, then recorded the version you hear on the album.
The reel itself was about half little kosmische loops I made with the modular specifically for this purpose; the other half was mostly drum sounds and loops from the Tymp Legio and Volca Drum; the remainder was found sound samples taken from microcassette.
#PsychedelicGhostStories #ProductionDiary
#Songwriting #MakingMusic #ModularSynth #MakeNoise #Morphagene
The track was made of a Morphagene reel made up of 13 splices of 13 seconds each (well, that was my intention but I made the reel with a stopwatch in real time, so the last reel was cut pretty short because the others all went long).
I had the idea for the title because, frankly, I have always thought that "Morphagene" sounded like some weird, alien technology or occult device, so I rolled with that. I came up with this sort of suitable scifi-meets-NewAge title and fed it into the AI and got a bevy of killer images. This was my nominal favorite, but they were all great.
#PsychedelicGhostStories #ProductionDiary #AIImages #AI #Inspiration

The #PsychedelicGhostStories #ProductionDiary continues and now we're on to "side 2" (phase 2?) of the record! We're now on the "At the Very Heart of It All, the Morphagene Brings Everything Into Being" one of 2 songs on the album that are both a) named after their main insturment and b) created (almost) entirely in modular
Lastly (for now, suppose I might think of something later or someone could have questions, which are always welcome): I like the weird hybrid of computer adventure game/Legend of Zelda/giallo soundtrack vibe this has. It feels like music you might hear in a #dream, which is ever an ambition of mine.
Oh, and as far as "go to an extreme, return to a comfortable space" #ObliqueStrategy that kicked it off, the deep orchestration and layering came in handy when it came to arrange the song and I could mix and match layers to keep things ever shifting throughout... dang, good advice Eno/Schmidt!
#PsychedelicGhostStories #ProductionDiary
#MusicProduction #Workflow #HomeRecording #HowItsMade #BrianEno #PeterSchmidt
For a long time I thought this would be the second to last song on the album leading into "The Madman Drowns..." (which I was *sure* would be the album closer...) but when it came time to sequence it, I realized it made more sense to do it the way it is now, with this closing a side and leading into the even weirder side of the album...
I should also mention that with the right images I am kind of #synesthetic. It's not "true" #synesthesia, but if I find a picture evocative I will frequently "hear" (it's not hearing, obviously; it's a weird imagination thing but it's hard to describe without referencing hearing) in a faint way the "music" of that place. So that's why I thought the whole "use AI images to get song ideas" thing might be handy... and it was!
#PsychedelicGhostStories #ProductionDiary #Songwriting #MakingMusic
This one felt like a #VideoGame to me and by this point the #AI image prompts also felt kinda like a weird videogame designed to spur creativity, so I leaned into it hard. I wanted to reference and acknowledge the use of those image generation tools, so naming it in a song (I used the NIghtCafe.studio stable diffusion model) seemed a good way.

Source of the #voice #sample is a cassette recording of a tarot/astrology reading I got at a thrift store. #FoundSound FTW. The #DrumLoop is one I had kicking around forever, recording #VolcaDrum onto a cassette and fucking with the speed. That's pretty much the #gear used.
The ascending melodic line is #Korg #opsix; #ASM #Hydrasynth is playing a string machine #patch I made for a patch challenge last year; ##Arturia #MicroFreak bassline. This one didn't get much added in the #production phase. Just the #voice #samples and a #DrumLoop in the last section.
So the core of the song HEAVILY features the #internal #MPC #plugins. Solina strings; Mellotron choir; brass, string and weird squidgy sounds from Hype; synth lead from from the TubeSynth. The minimal drums sounds are from my sort of core sample-based kit I've built up over the years (a bunch of which is in the free sample set at etherdiver.gumroad.com).
As for the #ObliqueStrategy, I pulled cards for most (maybe all?) of the songs at one point or another. This one I began with. I decided to heavily orchestrate this with lots of layers, and also to use mostly internal #MPC instruments plugins as the "extremes" I would take this song to.
#PsychedelicGhostStories #ProductionDiary #Songwriting #MakingMusic #HowItsMade
It started with a couple of #MusicTheory videos I'd seen on the #AndalusianCadence. Seemed like a cool device, and I put it on my "list of songwriting things to try." By this point in my writing and #recording process, I was down to my last "open" song slot (I knew what I would record last already, which we'll get to in time) so it was time.
#PsychedelicGhostStories #ProductionDiary #Songwriting #MakingMusic
It's almost midnight on a Saturday, so what better time to pick up the #PsychedelicGhostStories #ProductionDiary thread? None. None better time. (My music is late night weird mood music anyway, y'know?) We're now onto track 5, "The Inscrutable Oracle of the Night Cafe." The two key elements of this song's origin are the #AndalusianCadence, and the #ObliqueStrategy that says, "Go to an extreme, move back to a comfortable place"

Hey #Musodon #Musicians #MusiciansOfMastodon are you up for a #DIYMusicChat soon?

Saw this at the Musical Instrument Museum in Phoenix yesterday. Itβs a harp guitar, handmade by Bill Eaton. What a gorgeous instrument! #mimphx #harpguitar #makingmusic

Cool, drummachine of Thriller was mix between Linndrum, lm-1 and 808
Must say I still love the lively lm-1 hihats. Still use them myself. #music #makingmusic
Our daughter got a ukulele for her 7th birthday, and she absolutely loves it! She practices and plays with enthusiasm and passion. I teached her the names of strings and checked out some video to learn some chords.
I love to practice a bit myself so we can sing some songs at the campfire soon!
So, new instance and new #introduction time! If we share stuff, say "hello". Even if we don't, but you think we might have interesting chats, say "hi!". I've never been awesome at just listing interests. I'm into so many things, and I recognise that people are so complex anyway, that a list seems odd and restrictive. But with intent of connecting, here goes - Former #englishliterature nerd with interests in #science, #astronomy, #history, #psychology, #philosophy, #politics and on and on. Currently, I'm #writing and #drawing (mostly scribbling honestly) monsters for tiny #fantasy #horror adventures I make for #osr and #ttrpgs like #dungeonsanddragons. I love #boardgames and game mechanics generally. Sometimes I write #poetry and #fiction and even #makingmusic like #ambientmusic. Sometimes I #paint #abstractart. Often, I practice #photography. Studying #counselling has also led to an interest in #meditation, #compassion and #mindfulness. Oh, and recently have been getting into #Obsidian and #markdown. I'll probably Toot about lots of stuff, but that's reflective of my interest in so many areas. #joinin #introductions
@adrianco Most of my delays are used as insert effects on individual tracks, or applied to subgroups. I use lots of different delays with subtly different settings, again to keep things just a little off putting and unsettling.

To complement the different drum loops, I made a different #bassline for each section of the song, but to mix things up, I used the same #synth, the #Arturia #MicroFreak for all four different bass parts, but with a different preset for each part. (Again, most of those sounds can be found on one of my two #MicroFreakPreset packs at etherdiver.gumroad.com.)

One of the reviews of my previous album had mentioned that for as weird as it was, it was a pretty dry album overall. And that stung a little LOL. They were right though, I still have an #oldhead approach to #effects -- a little on the conservative side, a habit learned before we could record everything digitally and had so many tools to sculpt the sound both precisely and in wild, unpredictable ways.
