This cute Red Fox was a regular visitor to the cottages on the French River Ontario Canada and in this image decided to rest all curled up on a wooden deck but still perked up while checking out the activity in the area.

Plant people are my favorite people. You, too, can overcome #botanical #illiteracy & rewild yourself.
"Our planet has nearly 300,000 species of flowering #plants. Among animals, only #beetles can compete with that number. There are more species of #ferns than #birds, more mints than #mammals, and more beans than #butterflies. Measured in total mass, plants make up 82% of all life on land across the globe.
Many people think of plants more as a backdrop to life, rather than as a central part of it. Scientists & educators call this phenomenon plant awareness disparity – a widespread cognitive bias that leads people to underestimate the #diversity & importance of plants."

Happy Bat Week everyone!! Bats are the largest group of mammals in the world, with over 1,400 species. They're essential to our ecosystems:

- Bats devour insects: Insect-eating bats support crops globally and help farmers minimize the use of pesticides.
- Some bats, on average, can eat up to half their body weight in insects nightly. Pregnant and nursing mothers can consume the equivalent of their body weight each night.
- Bats pollinate: Nectar-slurping bats are vital to healthy ecosystems and are essential for maintaining food
supplies around the world. Bats pollinate the food we eat like dates, durians, pitaya, and other crops. They also pollinate agaves, wild bananas, balsa trees, cacti, and many other plants.
- Bats disperse seeds: Bats are superstars of seed dispersal. Bats drop seeds that facilitate plant growth and regenerate
forests, deserts, and other habitats crucial to supporting a variety of wildlife.

Took an early walk at Oxley before starting my Tuesday #volunteer workday on the odd chance of seeing some migrating birds or the Great Blue Heron that has taken up residence in the creek. As a wonderful surprise, I had the chance to work with a family of Otters that was hunting along the banks of the creek for fish. They caught over 20 fish while I was watching. Otters are present in the area, but a rare find. I see them perhaps twice a year. This was a female that had two cubs. She is over three feet long from nose to tip of tail, and will bark at hikers. The cubs came up close to chirp(?) as I was standing on the footbridge. A real thrill before the work started.

Don’t hate me because I’m beautiful. #Brazil #mammals #SoBizarre

A close-up of the face of a three-toed sloth. Hard to describe…a flat face with a small black nose and mouth that appears to be smiling, and dark eyes edged in black with black smidges leading down from the outer edges. The wiry gray fur is long, especially on the sides of the face. No ears are visible.

“Lioness on the lookout”

Maasai Mara is home of the largest population of African big cats, not only in Kenya but in Africa.

Females do most of the hunting, helped by males in taking down large animals.

Future of the human climate niche
and
Quantifying the human cost of global warming

Future of the human climate niche
"All species have an environmental niche, and despite technological advances, humans are unlikely to be an exception. Here, we demonstrate that for millennia, human populations have resided in the same narrow part of the climatic envelope available on the globe, characterized by a major mode around ∼11 °C to 15 °C mean annual temperature (MAT). "
"We show that in a business-as-usual climate change scenario, the geographical position of this temperature niche is projected to shift more over the coming 50 y than it has moved since 6000 BP."
"Global warming will affect ecosystems as well as human health, livelihoods, food security, water supply, and economic growth in many ways."
https://www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pnas.1910114117

Quantifying the human cost of global warming
"The costs of climate change are often estimated in monetary terms, but this raises ethical issues. Here we express them in terms of numbers of people left outside the ‘human climate niche’—defined as the historically highly conserved distribution of relative human population density with respect to mean annual temperature. We show that climate change has already put ~9% of people (>600 million) outside this niche."
"The worst-case scenarios of ~3.6 °C or even ~4.4 °C global warming could put half of the world population outside the historical climate niche, posing an existential risk"
"The ~2.7 °C global warming expected under current policies puts around a third of the world population outside the niche."
