A clever, simple, and heavily caveated method to track fighting in Ukraine: @ECONdailycharts uses ML to evaluate fire detected by NASA’s FIRMS satellites, and assesses whether or not it is related to the war.

It shows a significant increase in attacks in Russian-occupied areas since the beginning August 2023, and a greater increase in the past week. 🔥

In the new Google Maps, there's a building ON TOP of Liverpool St in Sydney (along with wonky roads and a missing cycleway)

At first I thought this was a random artifact - but then remembered this is where the now demolished monorail used to be.

Sure enough, the partially demolished monorail station is still present! The building must have been AI generated!

From the late 1670's comes a great "strip" map by John Ogilby. Here, to get from Presteigne to Carmathen, in Wales it's a practical method to keep one on the correct route to a destination, reference landmarks & stay on the route.
It's interesting that when automobiles became popular, early roads atlases used this same route method to get drivers to their next destination, by identifying landmarks and keeping them on a solitary path.

There's a new map style on OpenStreetMap.org! The Tracestrack Topo map from @tracestrack.

It's a mix of osm-carto and OpenTopoMap. It has many improvements: more tag support (busway, embankment, cuisine, solar plants, aquaculture, pitch, sea, tree etc.), CJK fonts, etc. There is
also better internationalisation: country specific road shields, peaks
using imperial system in the US, hierarchical place rendering in China, etc.

I’ve got a mountain bike here and haven’t used it much because CDMX is not optimized for bikes, BUT I just discovered I can easily access the mountains and a massive MTB trail network within an hour from my house (in Desierto de los Leones), via a seldom-promoted rail-trail (Ciclopista Ferrocarril de Cuernavaca), which is just beyond the UNAM university grounds (closed to cars on Sunday).

Yesterday I used Organic Maps app on my phone as an aid to navigation. Worked really well, the maps are detailed enough for hiking without being clustered.

Biggest win for me was using completely offline, just location on. This meant I hardly used much battery in the 6 hours of usage.

It's #FOSS and based over Open Street Maps. I enjoyed it and got value out of it, so I donated to @organicmaps
