The Pacific Coast Highway winding along the coastline of northern California. Most of the scene is bathed in bright sunshine, but the sky is a very pale blue with lots of billowing clouds and a thin haze of lingering morning fog. We are standing on a low ridge above a small scenic turnout, our economy rental car is parked below. The 2-lane road winds through an open area of tall grass and scrub growth with a few trees on the fringes. The ocean to our right is a pale aqua in the lingering mists. The distant sea stacks and seacliffs along the coastline are also a bit ghosted.

A soft blue sky with billowing white clouds. The ocean below is several shades darker, perhaps a cornflower blue. Long swells are breaking against the shore, creating a wide band of froth. We are standing atop a seacliff a couple hundred feet above a large bay, looking out over the top of a thicket of leafy green shrubs with long clusters of purple blossoms. On the far side of the bay a rugged green mountain rises from the edge of the bay hundreds of feet to its wooded summit.

We are walking through an area of sand dunes along the Pacific coast of Oregon. The sun is shining, although more rain clouds are visible well offshore. We can just see a small strip of the blue ocean along the horizon, frothy waves breaking on the coast. The dunes are tall, made up of slightly pinkish beige sand. There are clumps of grasses Growing along and around the bases of the dunes in many places. A rather large tidal pool lies in front of us to our right between the dunes.

The spring following my Appalachian Trail hike, I took a long bus ride to Seattle, where I rented an economy car and drove down the Pacific Coast Highway and sometimes even smaller coastal roads to San Francisco.

We are standing near the top of slightly pinkish beige sand dunes along the Pacific coast of Oregon. A small bump in the sand is covered with a clump of green and golden brown grasses. The sky is a deep blue with fluffy white clouds.

A break in the rain on a stormy day. We are in bright sunshine although the sky remains mostly cloudy. We are standing on the edge of a seacliff, on a grassy patch of flatter ground. Not far ahead, a storm-battered but still alive evergreen also stands right beside the edge of the cliff and rises above us. Storm waves are breaking on a deserted beach of dark beige sand at the base of the cliffs about 200 feet (about 60 meters) below us. Past the high water mark, the beach is piled with bleached driftwood, the remains of many trees.

A storm is ending, but the rain is still falling at this early point in my hike, helping create this moody panorama. I am hiking through a very broad swathe of sand dunes along the Oregon coast.

As the rain clouds begin to break up a bit we are walking a trail through light rain towards the nearby ocean. We are crossing a very broad swathe of sand dunes along the Oregon coast. Some of the dunes are covered with groves of evergreens, others tall golden grasses, and many are just barren sand dunes.

It is teeming with water grasses and other aquatic plants. Beyond are pale golden sand dunes, some of which also have some plant life on top. Beyond the dunes is a strip of coastal forest along the horizon.

We are in bright sunshine although the visible sky to our east remains cloudy. We are standing next to a rustic fenceline of unfinished wooden posts supporting several strands of barbed wire. Beyond the fence, a small river runs in a graceful S curve between two pastures of lush green grass speckled with scattered yellow dandelions and small white wildflowers. Pale golden brown water grasses line the riverbanks. A small grove of beautiful trees with very light gray bark grows along a short stretch of riverbank to our left. Beneath a deep blue sky streaked with thin hazy clouds we are standing on the shore of a lake watching the sun set behind a low ridge on the far shore. There is a peninsula of tall leafless trees on our left. The bright golden sun is burning through those trees and a band of orange-tinted haze along the horizon. The haze dims the sun only slightly while magnifying its apparent size several times. A light breeze softly ripples the lake.

Was the weather in March 2023 particularly horrible ? Yes it was !
I have records of our solar power production from the last 11 years and March 2023 was the third worst result with only 254 kWh, well below the average of 324 kWh for the ten previous months of March.
The extra panels that we added last year also didn't provide enough to bring our production up to average.
Overall the result for 2022-2023 was actually really good, with the highest output ever from our rooftop solar panels, but I'm bored of winter now.
We're only a few hours into April so far but as yet it's not stopped raining.

A beautiful large luminescent green dragonfly which is facing right resting on some reeds. There were blue ones as well, I apologize for not knowing the name.

A Canada goose nest with four eggs on the side of a dirt road that goes to a friend house, pasture with small marsh to left of nest. Goslings make their appearance as early as the mid April.

A beautiful healthy red fox with a thick winter coat,
that literally crossed our path as we were stopped by a lake we like to picnic at on weekdays. One of those times you realize you’re holding your breath.

Two brown Beavers, mates, facing the camera who were so busy with gutturals chattering wooing each other .. they did not notice me. They were on the edge of a highway and I could not bear it, so slammed the car door and they went back into the water and on shore kitty corner so to speak.

Last post in honour of #InternationalWomensDay -- The #Jutes and #AngloSaxons knew #March as Hreðemónaþ or Month of Hreðe.

There is very little known about this Goddess, her precise nature and significance remain shrouded in mystery.

Some have suggested that Hreðe was a goddess of victory and glory, celebrated by warriors who sought her favor in battle. Others, however, see her as a more sinister figure, associated with the violence and destruction that inevitably accompany conflict.

What is clear is that Hreðe was a powerful figure, one who inspired both reverence and possibly fear. Her name is derived from "hréþ" which means "glorious victory" and the verb hréðan means "to exult and rejoice". Because of this, she has been associated with war, in particular victory in war.

Another definition is: Quickly, immediately, at once, soon, forthwith, straightway. This could be a clue to the nature of her as well -- She is the Goddess of March, and this may refer to how swiftly weather changes, one day warm and the next still winter.

Hreðe may represent the fight and eventual triumph over the dark and cold of winter.

Some have suggested her name means "cruel", but that is a mistranslation of the #OldEnglish "reþe"

Ultimately, the true nature and significance of Hreðe may never be fully understood. But what is clear is that she remains a compelling and complex figure.
