The problem here is that in Russian mass culture an "offensive" has only one proper form: a million of infantrymen and tanks assaulting through an empty field, explosions, airplanes flying above, everyone screaming "hurrah". This is exactly how Soviet films portray it.
This has clearly projected not only on the general public but on the Russian military command too, judging from how they designed offensive on Vuhledar and other massive failures. And strongly hints they actually acquired their military command skills from Soviet films, rather military universities.
Another military expert ("We hear from Yanina", forgot what's his name) complains about ongoing degradation of Russian army over the last decades:
> They were silent about the fact that the army is degrading and PMCs are fighting in its place. About the fact that generals are awarded "Heroes of Russia" for honouring the operations conducted by PMCs with their high and not very sober presence ... Silent about the beautifully honest late military reporter, whose records are sort of presented to the public. Silent Prigozhin, who is now blaspheming the MO with all his might. Everyone was silent.
Once again, as almost all Russians, he's tragically not seeing the forest from behind the trees. The generals were silent not just because it was "business", because that is how the whole structure of power in Russia is set up: it's hierarchical and it ends up on one person: the Leader. The latter, in all his megalomania, needs the army as an instrument of power in order to force someone to do something every 20 years.
But in the Russian system, where everyone keeps looking up at his superior for both orders and then absolution, there's no collective mechanism for feedback to correct typically human cognitive biases. Why you need a committee if the Leader is risen practically to the level where he's nearly a sacred person? Quite the opposite: if Leader has a vision, the vision is too sacred, and your job as a mere mortal is to reassure him with endless declarations of allegiance.
We saw this many times when during the worst Russian failures there rose a wave of anxious comments wondering that this just must be part of some greater, genius plan. But this blind reliance on the hierarchy of power also serves another purpose, entirely egoistic and quite infantile too: the absolution. If you uncritically follow orders, you're not guilty! That has been the core commandment of the Homo Sovieticus culture.
So the whole system was doomed to fail from the beginning, which is why nobody who saw the *real* Russia on the ground never believed they will start the full-scale war, including myself. We all made a huge mistake by underestimating the positive feedback of irrationality: Russian military never believed their Security Council would go for the full-scale war knowing the state of their army and the state of Ukrainian army. But there was no Security Council either: that was a smoke screen too, and to Putin who was really in command on all level, in all his self-inflicted blindness it never occurred that his military are lying just as much as they saw it coming from their superior...

This is to convince audience in Russia to their official version, that the catastrophic destruction of the town was not done by Russian army.
But Russian propaganda is just sloppy. This absurd claim is unintentionally debunked by the same Russian media, as they just published an interview[^1] with an artillerist operating a "Tyulpan" mortar battery:
> During the fighting for Mariupol, where the "Tylpans" were used during the destruction phase of an encircled enemy grouping, one or two precise hits destroyed whole parts of nine-storey buildings. The officer uses the word "stacked" to refer to the collapse of the structure of paneled multi-storey buildings from powerful explosions or hits to the supporting structures.
There's also plenty of Russian videos from the ongoing siege in April 2022 e.g. where Russian tank drives through the town and directly shells residential buildings and this is filmed by RT. I found two by a 5 mins search and attached here.
But in today's Russia to bring back these videos, published by Russian state media, could likely get you a jail for "discrediting Russian army", as the official version has now changed and you're supposed to forget everything said before and follow without questioning. What we're watching in real time, is rewriting the history by 180°, which Russia has done frequently in the past e.g. when hiding its collaboration with Nazis in World War 2.

According to the telegram channel 'mariupolnow' - screenshot attached (it is usually posting from #Russian occupied #Mariupol in #Ukraine ) the building of the #Drama #Theatre has been #demolished. It was used during Russia's massive air and ground #assault as a #shelter and marked as such, visible on satellite pictures. Nevertheless #Russia bombed it on 16 March (might be wrong about the date) killing between 300 to 600 people, according to local estimates.
AP measured each grid section where the cemetery had been expanded and calculated the total space occupied by new #graves to be more than 51,500 square meters.
