Venus went from its domicile in Libra ♎ to its detriment in Scorpio ♏ today. We go from indulging in decadence, balancing the scales, taking our previous experience from Venus retrograde this summer & expressing ourselves in new ways, to being more vulnerable, opening up & going deeper with the new relationships we've formed.
Venus is in detriment in Scorpio because Scorpio resembles the energy of Mars more than Venus. Venus wants to provide a nice space for people to exist, where they can love each other & find balance. This provides the person with the ability to choose when they're able & have the confidence to take on outside problems in their life. On the other hand, Mars is a problem solver & understand pain, & trauma. Mars doesn't shy away from the ugliness of life & in fact excels in it. This leads to a depth & magnetism that is exuded when Venus is in Scorpio. The ability to go deeper than the light surface, which is in some ways opposite of how Venus goes about helping normally.
Now is a time for vulnerability, opening up, and allowing the people you trust to truly care for you.

Happy Monday, everyone!
It was 27 years ago, on December 4, 1996, when NASA launched the Mars Pathfinder, a robotic spacecraft to explore the surface of Mars. It carried the Sojourner Mars rover, which landed on Mars on July 4, 1997.
How would you describe this panorama image of the landing site?

Perseverance made a short drive to the north on December 4th, 2023 to site 47/94. We don't have all the post drive images or map data etc at this time, but we do have this post-drive tiled NavCam that features the interesting outcrop called 'Barrabiddy', this outcrop was studied from the rover's previous location, but it appears they decided to take a closer look at Barrabiddy. To prepare for a new rock core drilling by Mars rover Perseverance,
1. The Bit Carousel (BC) is rotated until the appropriate drill bit (there are 9 bits of 3 different kinds) is positioned at the bottom.
2. An empty tube is inserted into the hollow bit by the robotic Sample Handling Assembly.
3. The BC is rotated to bring the bit+tube to the top.
4. The bit+tube assembly is extracted by the drill apparatus on the robotic arm.

Finally figured out an annoying bug in my code related to NED and ENU coordinate conventions.
This means my converted Marsrover images now have accurate pointing information from the CAHVOR camera model embedded in xmp metadata.
Programs like PTGui or Metashape can import this as priors, so creating panoramas or photogrammetry scans will be a lot easier in the future!

This video and animation from NASA shows the operation of the Bit Carousel (BC) and the Sampling and Caching System (SCS) of Mars rover Perseverance.
Starting at the 1:28 mark, the robotic arm deposits a sample tube into the BC upper door. The next 35 seconds shows the journey of the sample from that point onward until it is safely deposited in the storage area.
The Sample and Caching System is one of the most complex robotic systems ever built.
The image in post #1 was taken by Perseverance's SHERLOC WATSON camera, which is located on the turret at the end of the rover's robotic arm. The robotic arm was most likely oriented as shown in the image below, taken by the Left Navigation Camera (Navcam). The camera on the turret is facing the Bit Carousal upper door on the front side of the rover.

How does the Bit Carousel move sample tubes in vertical orientation underneath Mars rover Perseverance to the upper door in horizontal orientation?
It's quite simple and ingenious. The BC wheel axis is tilted 45° from vertical. The drill bit holders are tilted outwards by 45° from the plane of the wheel. Voilà, the bit holders are oriented vertically when rotated to the bottom and horizontally when rotated to the top! The tubes slide in and out of the drill bits.

This is another graphic focusing on the Mars rover Perseverance's Bit Carousel (BC) and the Sampling and Caching System (SCS).
The image perspective is from underneath the rover, hence objects look upside down.
Besides the large Bit Carousel wheel with drill bits and the sample tubes, the SCS contains an inspection station and a tube sealing instrument. There is a robotic arm (SHA) underneath the SCS that moves tubes around.

Here is a graphic of Mars rover Perseverance's Bit Carousel (BC) and the Sampling and Caching System (SCS).
It shows the upper Bit Carousel door, the circular BC itself and the rest of the SCS located in the rover's underbelly.
Drill bits are mounted on the BC. Empty and filled sample tubes are located in vertical orientation underneath. The BC transports drill bits and sample tubes back and forth from the lower BC area to the upper BC door.

Now that Mars rovers and orbiters are communicating again with earth after the recent Solar Mars Conjunction event, rover Perseverance seems to be inspecting its instruments and getting ready to collect more rock samples.
This is a pic of the upper door of Percy's Bit Carousel, from where drill bits and sample tubes are picked by the robotic arm and where sample-filled tubes are deposited.
Let's take a deeper look at the rover's Sampling and Caching System.

"The goal for Mr. Mendoza and his collaborators was to investigate whether frass and the bugs that created it might someday help astronauts grow food and manage waste on Mars. Black soldier fly larvae could consume astronauts’ organic waste and process it into frass, which could be used as fertilizer to coax plants out of alien soil. Humans could eat the plants and even food made from the larvae, producing more waste for the cycle to continue." #entomology #insects #Mars https://www.nytimes.com/2023/11/27/science/mars-needs-insects.html

Mars rover Perseverance is alive and well!
After a two week hiatus, since Nov 11, when comms with Mars orbiters and rovers was blocked due to the Mars solar conjunction, images are starting to arrive.
Below are two similar images, one taken on Nov 10, the other on Nov 18, when Mars was directly behind the Sun.
The two images look almost identical except for a small difference in shading and shadow and the missing pixels in the Nov 10 image.

Worth mentioning:
I've been reporting apparent separation of Earth and Sun as it would appear to someone/something on the surface of Mars. #NASA mentions a 2° separation for the start/end of the imposed "communications moratorium", where separation refers to Mars and Sun as seen from the surface of Earth. That separation is now almost 2° 30'.

📆 1999 #NASA lost its $125-million #Mars #ClimateOrbiter because #spacecraft engineers failed to convert from English to #metric measurements 📏 when exchanging vital data before the craft was launched.
None of #JPL’s rigorous quality control procedures caught the error 🐞 in the nine months it took the spacecraft to make its 461-million-mile flight to #Mars 🔴. The miscalculations were enough to throw the spacecraft so far off track that it flew too deeply into the #Martian atmosphere and was destroyed 💥 when it entered its initial #orbit around Mars https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-1999-oct-01-mn-17288-story.html

Could we, one day, watch “The Last Days on Mars” on … Mars? NASA recently beamed messages via laser across a distance of nearly 16 million kilometers as part of its Deep Space Optical Communications experiment. This could open the door to sending scientific information and high-definition imagery and streaming video to and from Mars without significant delay. Science Alert has more: https://flip.it/8XZweF
#Science #Space #Mars #Laser #NASA
As the Sun rose over Jezero Mons this Martian (and European) morning, Earth appeared to be separated from it by almost 50' of a degree, which is now more than the separation it had when images from the Mars orbiters stopped coming, lost in the noise induced by the Sun into the antennas of #NASA's Deep Space Network.
Although it will be one more week before NASA can safely command Mars spacecrafts again, *receiving* images could theoretically be possible from now on.
The European Space Agency's ExoMars probe recently spotted the Red Planet glowing green at night.
Futurism explains the phenomenon: https://flip.it/jHe23x
NASA has paused all Mars missions because the Red Planet has reached solar conjunction. This means Mars is on the other side of the sun, farther from Earth than usual, and the agency loses contact with its robotic missions during such a period. Live Science explains: https://flip.it/xmu1J-
