Turn up the volume!

Found these two river otters on a hike the other day. I got loads of short videos but this one has one of the otters make noises like a squeezy toy. 🥰🥳

Lontra canadensis laxatina, Taxodium distichum

#wildlife #nature #otter #otters #MarshMadness #NativePlants

The video shows two swimming river otters. To the left is some green marsh grass. In the foreground is the water that is reflecting greens and browns. To the right is a submerged large bald cypress. Its trunk shows that it has been submerged at varying levels. Green leafed branches hang down. In the water just behind the tree is one of the otters and you can see it make the squeezy sounds. Another otter swims from the right to go behind the tree and the one at the left swims to the left and front. The otters are adults but still very cute.

Out of a swampy terrain, several very large yellow flowering structures are rising. They consist of a bright yellow hood-like covering, with a greenish-brown spike emerging from the hood. This spike is covered with the actual, tiny flowers.

For weeks we saw a heron every morning, but when I finally took my camera out to get a snap it decided to go somewhere else for breakfast. Not a sight of it.

Finally caught it today, having lunch rather than breakfast. Didn't get a great photo, but caught a nice moment (probably nicer for the heron than the wee fish tbh).

Three photos of a heron in the long reeds of a water meadow. The first shows it looking down at the water, the second shows it splashing down for it's lunch, the third shows it standing again with a wee fish in its beak.

Good morning. 🌄🌅🌞

Yesterday Charlie caught one of the young squirrels in the backyard. These days there are usually more of those little squirrels in the backyard than I notice. It's just a game to Charlie, chase the squirrel, he has no idea what to do if he catches a squirrel. Usually, he freezes just when he is in a good position to grab a squirrel. This time, he nabbed the little squirrel, picked it up, then dropped it, and the squirrel scurried through the hole under the fence. He's done that with a rabbit as well. Do you think he understands empathy?

“Some people think only intellect counts: knowing how to solve problems, knowing how to get by, knowing how to identify an advantage and seize it. But the functions of intellect are insufficient without courage, love, friendship, compassion, and empathy.” - Dean Koontz

#photo #photography #photographer #photographylovers #birds #birdsofmastodon #birdwatching #morning #NeotropicCormorant #dogs #squirrels #empathy #marshmadness

This is a landscape or waterscape of a bayou (marsh). The water fills more than half the frame from bottom to top. Then there are golden brown reeds followed by green vegetation at the top. The water is very rippled closer to the reeds but towards the bottom of the frame it's calmer, it's there where reflections of the trees beyond appear. On the far left, almost out of the frame is a small stump that sticks out of the water. In the center of the frame is a neotropic cormorant swimming from right to left, there is a slight wake in its path. Off to the right edge of the frame near the reeds is an out of focus white bird, probably a cormorant.

Peaceful feeling.

I love this photograph, I may have posted a version of it before, I'm not sure. This is at the Sabine National Wildlife Refuge in Cameraon Parish, Louisiana. It's not far from the Gulf of Mexico. This was a good day for bird photography, there were birds of different species everywhere.

#photo #photography #photographer #photographylovers #birds #birdsofmastodon #birdwatching #Landscape #MarshMadness

This photograph is a landscape. It's a photo of a spot on a bayou. There is a channel of water from the lower portion of the frame that goes around a large patch of golden-brown reeds on the right and disappears on the right midway up the screen. On the other side of the channel is more reeds and some scattered green vegetation farther up the channel is lower brown vegetation, and, in the background, there is a low green forest. A hazy white sky takes over the top third of the frame.

In the golden-brown reeds, on the right are two indistinct birds. The closest is a tall grey bird with a very long neck, it rises out of the golden reeds like a tower. I think that the grey bird likely a great blue heron. Another farther back and to the right is a white bird, likely either a snowy or great egret. Flying away at a distance low over the water of the bayou is another white bird, probably an egret. Way off in the distance on the far side of the channel is another vague white figure, and yes probably another egret.

A #poem to close out #MarshMadness.

MARSHLANDS by Emily Pauline Johnson
#PoetryFoundation

A thin wet sky, that yellows at the rim,
And meets with sun-lost lip the marsh’s brim.

The pools low lying, dank with moss and mould,
Glint through their mildews like large cups of gold.

Among the wild rice in the still lagoon,
In monotone the lizard shrills his tune.

...

Hushed lie the sedges, and the vapours creep,
Thick, grey and humid, while the marshes sleep.

#birds and last day for #marshMadness

A great blue heron stands on a grassy hill and lifts eir leg, about to scratch at eir neck.
As ey scratch at eir neck, the breeze ruffles eir neck feathers and head plumes, leaving them in disarray.
Our gangly friend has stopped scratching and begins to drop eir leg. Eir neck and head feathers are still all blown about, with head plumes basically sticking straight up.
Ey are standing up straight again on both legs. While eir neck feathers have unruffled somewhat, eir head plumes are still sticking straight up like a little mohawk. Eir long chest plumes are blowing gently in the breeze.
