There are many things I'd like to have improved. That's why I have designed my own UI "in the meantime". If I had all the time in the world I'd be contributing more to the Mastodon core. But for now I just add my own #CSS.

We at tyrol.social are currently testing the #MastodonBirdUI - a custom CSS adaptation by @rolle (with minor adjustments by me). The theme is very clear and most similar to Twitter - in my opinion much better than the original Mastodon theme. Thanks for the great work, Roni!

I was against having two CSS files, but now that I want to have my command center for #Eurovision only, I decided to do it. It was easier to search and replace class .layout-single-column to .layout-multiple-columns and fix few things to a separate file rather than add multi column support to the single CSS file. Totally worth it.

PS. I recommend using the advanced web interface styles with a browser extension because it's desktop only. That way it will not add too much bloat to all sides of Mastodon. Added this recommendation to the docs. #CSS #MastodonBirdUI

@rolle oh my god you so have a great point 👉. I love using #MastodonBirdUI when I can. Just wish I could use on mobile

The thing that's been bothering me in the default Mastodon UI is that I see too much information that is not needed. It's noisy.

For example, favorites and boosts don't need to have my own avatar or the action bar (why would I boost or fav my own post based on someone else's fav action, it makes no sense) and so on. Too much clutter.

The point there is to see who has favorited your post NOW and that's it.

On the left you see the original Mastodon UI, on the right #MastodonBirdUI. Less is more. #UIDesign #Design #WebDesign

I'm expecting the upcoming version of #Mastodon so I can implement the official thread lines on #MastodonBirdUI. My hack works, but the official is always better.

@mitexleo I would like to contribute to many things. But I have limited time and energy, so I just focus on the things that I myself use and are the easiests, to save myself from burning out. Right now the #MastodonBirdUI is my sole focus and perhaps later the #Mastodon CSS/UI in general. #Lemmy is out of scope time/energy-wise for me right now.

I too hope that more excited #CSS people have motivation and time to help, but I'm well aware of the fact that all the good ones are overworked and busy with projects they make money from, me included. But one can hope. :bunhdlurkaww:

@AlderForrest Itellä samaa ajaa oma Mastodon-serveri. Misskey/Calckey on itselleni äärimmäisen sekava ja "noisy", en tykännyt kun testasin.

Pakko vähän heittää omat, miksi ei Calckey itselle toiminut:

1. Support your local dev - aina hyvä asenne :thumbs_up_traditional:
2. Lainauksia en toistaiseksi ole kaivannut. Mastodoniin saa myös DeepL-käännökset, ne on omassa instanssissani päällä. Moni ei tiedä muuten että Quote posts on Mastodonin roadmapilla! Eli tulossa todennäköisesti jossain kohtaa.
3. Antennit ihan kiinnostava ominaisuus, mutta toistaiseksi itselleni riittää häsäreiden seuraaminen
4. Itse en voi sietää Misskeyn/Calckeyn UI:ta :D En ole myöskään Mastodonin oletusUI:n fani, siksi olen kehittänyt oman #MastodonBirdUI:n. Ja emojireaktiot eivät mielestäni kuulu someen vaan Discordiin ja Telegramiin.
5. Samoin Mastodon, jos S3 käytössä
6. 1-4 kuvaa riittää hyvin somessa
7. Maksimimerkkimäärä itselläni 10000 ja on muitakin Mastodon-servereitä, joilla myös tämä
8. Mittee meinaa?
9. Itsellä v4.1.2~mementomori-social-mods + Mastodon Bird UI on Mastodon, juuri kuten itse haluan :blobtonguewink:

Mutta Fediversessä on tosiaan hienointa että jokainen saa tehdä siitä omanlaisensa.
