#MastodonTips
This is a very long, but incredibly informative thread on how the Fediverse works.
TL;DR, mastodon is the Fediverse as much as YouTube is the entire internet, which is to say, not at all.

Happy #FollowFriday!
Some #Friday #MastodonTips I’ve learnt over the last few months…
1. You can get a lot from just browsing if you curate a good feed *but* you will get a lot more if you interact with people.
2. If you’re hovering between the favorite or boost button, it’s ok (and I would encourage you) to do both - plus you can comment and follow that same person too. Try it, it will make you feel good!
3. Be yourself. I know this sounds trite but it took me a long time to really speak from the heart. Probably from spending too much time in tech dad/bro land (I felt like I had to deal with more ‘tech dad’s in my early career!) - I held back and was worried about getting it wrong. It’s ok to be wrong sometimes, just learn and move on. Even geniuses get it wrong now and then.
That’s it! Until the next time I think of a tip (likely 2 seconds after I hit post)
New to Mastodon? Please take the time to do a couple of things.
1) Change your profile picture to something personal/meaningful about you as a person.
2) Fill in your bio. Tell everyone what things you're into, what #hashtags you are interested and anything else that helps us get to know you.
These things help give you an identity here that will help others know if they share the same interests as you.

The post below is extremely important.
Using “fancy text” generators on your username is impossible to read, and deeply frustrated, for blind or visually impaired people.
Please read this post.

Here's an example of a post whose language was incorrectly marked as Russian (it's actually Ukrainian), so the translation is a mess. #MastodonTips

Remember to set the language on your posts so people can translate them. I see posts marked as EN that aren't in English. In the advanced web interface, click on the code below the new post text box. You can change your default posting language in settings > preferences > other #MastodonTips

Currently loving @IceCubesApp as a mastodon client for iOS, it’s got it all. Just discovered. Multiple timelines, trending, editing, notifications, a captivating modern UI, fast, and open source. And more. #mastodon #MastodonTips #apps 🔝@dimillian
#MastodonTips the one-day mute makes the notification for a comment that "does not exist" go away for a while
@WanderingTaoist
I can't think of any way to auto boost the posts of the account, but you could possibly use a service like @buffer to schedule the same post to be sent from each account simultaneously.
Is that something that might work for you?
#mastodontips #help on @MonaApp when I try to open the post in a new window (a specific function of this app) sometimes it doesn’t work. It’s odd because in the timeline I can see that post

Although word filters never works, there is still one benefit to use official mastodon‘s App on iOS, it saved more time to mute or block accounts compared to entire *universe* 🤓 😂
@elliek
This is actually super easy to do using the Just My Toots site.
Use the following URL scheme and just replace the username at the end with the profile you wish to see the toots of.
https://justmytoots.com/@paulomalley@c.im
Please note that this is an Opt-In service, so you (or the person you whose toots you are trying to see) will need to add your version of this URL into your Profile in order for the site to work.
The benefit of this is that you can easily revoke access in no time at all should you wish.
Jetpack's latest update appears to have fixed the Mastodon logo issue! 🎉

Does anyone know of a way to see only your own posts, leaving out the boosts? It would be so handy to be able to see at a glance if I've shared a photo already, to avoid repetition. I know you can choose to hide other people's boosts, but it still shows them on their profile. It only hides those in the stream and that's not what I'm looking for. It would be good to see only their posts on their profile as well, if I want. Probably not possible, but worth asking. #mastodon #help #mastodontips
Having a separate mastodon account only to follow news instead of using the personal accounts for this turned out to be a much better idea than I though. Timelines are shorter and easier to read and i have a separate session just to read news, using a multi-account client makes it easy to boosted them from any account #mastodontips
For #JoinMastodonDay (now finished…) I wrote down a few #MastodonTips, check them out if you’re new and feel free to comment or add other ones otherwise: https://neuromatch.social/@elduvelle/109993254502416361

Looking for #MastodonTips. I really like the community here at hachyderm.io and as a Norwegian I also want to be a part of the more #Norwegian oriented communities.
Up to now I have used separate accounts on other Mastodon instances to look at the local feed and follow interesting people on this account.
This feels sub-optimal and I wonder if there are better ways to participate in multiple communities.

Because there are no algorithms, hashtags are especially important on Mastodon. They let others find your posts when they search for that hashtag.
To use hashtags, simply include the "#" symbol followed by the word or phrase you want to tag. Use capitalization to make phrases easier to read. For instance, instead of #mastodontips use #MastodonTips.
WordPress added a share to Mastodon option to Jetpack's social sharing options, but the Mastodon logo isn't displaying correctly on my site. 🤔

Mastodon Is Not A Walled Garden
Facebook, Instagram and Twitter are considered “walled gardens” — full of content on the inside, but surrounded by walls and gates. They don’t go out of their way to make viewing content on their platforms easy without an account.
Although there are some workarounds, Facebook and Twitter will repeatedly nag you to set up an account.
Mastodon is different.
Sharing one particular post is easy.
On the web app:
Click into the post.
Click on the three dots.
Click on “Copy link to post”
On Ivory for iPhone:
Tap the post.
Tap the up arrow “share” icon.
Tap “Copy Link to Post”
Then paste that link into an email, text message, DM, etc.
➡️ Wanna share *all* your public posts with someone?
You can DM/email a link like the one below to anyone who doesn’t *yet* have a Mastodon account:
https://infosec.exchange/@AnthonyCollette
They’ll be able to read all your public posts — and the Local, Home and Federated feeds of that instance if they’re curious. All without being repeatedly nagged to death to set up an account.
Simply substitute your instance name and your account name in the link above.
Share freely from Mastodon, and who knows?
Maybe even *more* folks will join us here.

For anyone who is #NewHere:
On Mastodon, you have to opt-in if you want your account to be suggested to others. To do this, navigate to your profile by clicking "edit profile." Check the box for "suggest account to others" and be sure to save your changes.
In the #fedilab app there's a setting to make all *reply toots* "unlisted" by default.
In the vanilla web client (If you just browse your instance directly in the browser), is there an equivalent setting to this?
I still would like my *non-reply toots* to remain "public", and remembering to switch in-between post privacy is quite annoying 😑 #feditips #mastodontips

The 🔑 to enjoying Mastodon is finding interesting, active accounts to follow and then tuning in to what matters to you.
1. Start with a familiar foundation by following people you already do on Twitter: https://debirdify.pruvisto.org
2. Build on that by following their interesting follows: https://followgraph.vercel.app
3. Your home feed will quickly become a firehose. Use lists to group accounts into buckets by topic, industry, location, etc: https://www.mastodonlistmanager.org
I've been using Elk as my Mastodon reader. What a tremendously well designed and beautiful piece of software. Smooth as silk.
Are there any apps, tools, or tricks that will let me see comments threaded to their post in my Feed by default?
#MastodonTips
@Pink_Bunny Depends on the platform you are using.
On PC, I simply use the built in GIF feature in the Windows 11 Emoji popup (can be accessed using WIN+.)
On Android, my keyboard (GBoard) has a GIF search feature. Using this allows me to insert GIFs easily enough.
You can also use GBoard on iOS if that is your preferred platform.
Whatever platform I use though, I do need to ensure I add #AltText to the GIF, but that isn't hard to do with most apps today.

Ok, those of you who are able to post gifs on #Mastodon - how DO you do it?! #MastodonTips
Here is a good example of how to compose a long post. I can see exactly what it's about and choose to expand or not. #MastodonTips #FediTips
DON’T LIKE WHAT YOU SEE?
You have the power to create a more comfortable Mastodon experience.
For all of us new folks here, it’s really helpful to know we have many options to filter out content we’re not comfortable seeing.
FILTERING POSTS
Filter out *posts* which contain specific words, phrases or hashtags, and then decide which contexts you’d like them removed from -- home timeline, public timelines, notifications, conversations, etc. You can set a filter for a limited amount of time if you want to give a phrase or word a chance to quiet down. Or set the filter to never expire. You can always edit these options later.
FILTERING USERS
Filter out *users* in various ways:
HIDE BOOSTS
Choose this option and you won’t see their boosts in your home feed. This option only appears on users who you are currently following. From their profile, choose the 3 dots and select “Hide boosts from [username]”
MUTING A USER
When muting, you have the option to mute notifications from them or not. Muting without muting notifications hides the user from your view:
☑️ You won’t see the user in your home feed
☑️ You won’t see other people boosting the user
☑️ You won’t see other people mentioning the user
☑️ You won’t see the user in public timelines
If you choose to also mute notifications from them, you won’t see notifications from that user.
Mutes can also have an optional duration, after which they’ll expire.
The user has no way of knowing they have been muted.
BLOCKING A USER
Blocking hides a user from your view:
☑️ You won’t see the user in your home feed
☑️ You won’t see other people boosting the user
☑️ You won’t see other people mentioning the user
☑️ You won’t see the user in public timelines
☑️ You won’t see notifications from that user
Additionally, on the blocked user’s side:
☑️ The user is forced to unfollow you
☑️ The user cannot follow you
☑️ The user won’t see other people’s boosts of you
☑️ The user won’t see you in public timelines
If you and the blocked user are on the same instance, the blocked user will not be able to view your posts on your profile while logged in.
REPORTING PROBLEMATIC CONTENT
If you see a user that is violating the rules of your instance, you can report that user to your instance’s moderators.
➡️ It may be helpful to first take a screenshot of any offending content. This may come in handy if the user deletes their posts.
Clicking the “report” option on the user dropdown will open the reporting window. Here, you can add a note about why you are reporting the account. If their conduct is violating the rules of another instance, you can choose to forward a copy of the report to their instance's moderators.
A big “Thank You” to the folks at Mastodon who provide these excellent filtering options.
Fun little Mastodon site that shows your top posts (by @patrikcsak)
if you make a long post, only the first line shows up, so give some hint as to what it's about. Words like "New" and "Hey" are not very useful. #MastodonTips
The best advice I have for those of you new to Mastodon is to follow me and boost each of my posts.

One of my favourite capabilities within #Mastodon:
Subscribe to your own #RSS newsfeed to have an offline local copy of all of your original toots (no comments or boosts, hope they may get added up eventually!) in case I decide to move servers or things may get borked.
And to do that hourly/daily to my favourite RSS feed reader of choice (#NetNewsWire in this case), pretty much like I do with my own personal business blog. No regrets 😁😎👍🏻
Ok #MastodonTips, a technical question. Why would a post be shown to have more reblogs/favourites when viewed from one account to another? Case in point, this fabulous post from @keira_reckons. On my mstdn.ca based account it shows over 200 reblogs. On my selfhosted mstdn.chrisalemany.ca account, only 20. Shouldn’t the number of reblogs be kept within the meta data of the post itself so it is always accurate? Is this a function of my #selfhosted server not keeping up? #selfhost #bugs
@Author_Thom_Tate If you are looking to expand your network, the best thing you can do is engage with others first.
Your Intro post is a great start.
Now look to follow some other accounts, follow some hashtags that you find interesting too. This will help to flesh out you home timeline with some content.
Begin to engage with others on their content and you will inevitably grow your own network here.
Just blasting stuff out there won't help to grow your presence here, it engagement that does it.

man, i gotta say... following primarily hashtags instead of accounts (sorry!*) sure makes for an information-dense and high-relevancy timeline. fucking love it. ❤️

#MastodonMigration #TwitterMigration #FediTips #MastodonTips
Here’s something that Twitter expats are not really understanding, not using hashtags on Mastodon is the reason your engagement is underwhelming. Mastodon doesn’t have a search function nor an algorithm to surface inflammatory nonsense all the time. Unless you tag your post it’s only going to reach your followers at the time of posting. If someone is not in front of the app during that time, you might as well shout into the neither. #TwitterMigration #MastodonMigration #MastodonTips
#Mastodon question:
Muting followed "noisy" accounts and putting them on a list doesn't seem to work here. The list only shows a few old toots of them and not the entire timeline.
Do I have to create a second account to follow accounts that I don't want to flood my main timeline?
How do you structure your followings?
I'm having a bit of trouble getting used to #Mastodon, in part because all of the posts are chronological. I'm putting many people I most want to follow in lists, eg. #politics, #covid, etc., but this feels a bit cumbersome.
Any other suggestions?
#MastodonTips @feditips

Been seeing a lot of cropped screenshots of Twitter nonsense lately. If you want your screenshots to be readable without expanding the post and not cut off on the sides for most browser users, post them as native 16:9 images. Also, you can adjust the focus point with the editor.

Hello #Mastodonians!
I have a number of lists from my old #Mastodon account that I would like to import. The old server gave me the export, I'd just like the reverse for my migrated account. I understand that importing lists is not yet possible with the existing Mastodon software.
Is there a third-party tool that will help import/merge my lists?
Thanks in advance.

Your periodic reminder that Followgraph is a great way to find new people to follow:
Uncle Bob might have great tech related content but you might not be interested in reading about Uncle Bob's golf stories on a daily basis.
Go to your Settings.
Use filters and keep following Uncle Bob! ✅ 📝
Just realized that instead of #unfollowing interesting people there's actually a handy filtering option baked into #Mastodon.
If you are interested in most of what a person has to say but don't want to see a specific topic like fishing for instance, you can go to
Settings | Filters | Add new filter | Write a bunch of uninteresting keywords and you're good to go!
Hope this helps! 😺
Mastodon v4.1.0 got released today!
Some awesome additions that people have been after for a while now:
- Add support for importing/exporting server-wide domain blocks
- Ensure exact match is the first result in hashtag searches
- Add support for editing media description and focus point of already-sent posts
- Add listing of followed hashtags
And the list of fixes inbound with this version is monstrous.
This is great to see, but please keep in mind that your particular instance will need to be updated to this version so not all instances will update at the same time.
Some apps may also need to be updated in order to support these new features.
I have been away from Mastodon because the app on my phone stopped working well... anyone have any suggestions for iPhone apps that aren't #metatext
New to Mastodon? Here's a good tip when you post something.
Include an image description, often referred to as ALT TEXT.
Accessibility is a huge thing here on Mastodon that everyone should be thoughtful and respectful of.
Including ALT TEXT allows those with certain impairments to know what your image is about that you're including within your post.

Contrary to some self-serving media coverage, people continue to sign up and kick the tires here — most surges apparently align to Musk’s latest shenanigans, which I’m blissfully unaware of most days — and a lot of them are sticking around and, like me, enjoying the experience.

New to Mastodon?
Use #hashtags as often as possible.
This tells others what you like, what interests you have and so much more. Don't be scared to use them frequently.
Others will likely engage with you and your posts more frequently if you use hashtags, as they see hashtags that are of interest to them.
Users can search for and even follow a specific hashtag, allowing more eyes on your content in the long run.
People on Mastodon curate their home feeds and don't rely on algorithms because they know beautiful things take time and effort. If you are lazy and passive, then you will have a bad home feed. Mastodon is what you make it. You have to work to make it happen.
Follow more people
Follow more hashtags
Boost posts you like
Post and include hashtags
Comment on other people's posts
New to Mastodon? Please take the time to do a couple of things.
1) Change your profile picture to something personal/meaningful about you as a person.
2) Fill in your bio. Tell everyone what things you're into, what #hashtags you are interested and anything else that helps us get to know you.
These things help give you an identity here that will help others know if they share the same interests as you.
#MastodonMigration #TwitterMigration #Mastodon #FediTips #MastodonTips #Tips

@TechWithHannah My two most important tips though:
**You control your home feed** through following folks, following tags (do this for every topic that interests you), filtering (you can filter out words or phrases so you don't see content on those topics).
Follow @feditips and #mastodontips you'll learn the platform faster.
I've found the conversations here to be better than on #twitter personally, and the platform itself doesn't artificially encourage flame wars.
