With the news of big changes with the mod team at Babka, I feel compelled to make an update here after previously posting about my bad experience. I feel optimistic for Babka with these changes and am excited to see what the future holds for the instance. I've had many conversations with the new head mod and I'm fully confident that he truly cares and is committed to getting this right. As I said in my last post, my experience with other users on Babka was that the instance has so many amazing people; and I don't think that the actions of one person shouldn't cost the whole instance another chance. Babka has many diverse voices who are a truly valuable part of the fediverse, and the loss of those voices as a part of the fabric of fedi would be significant and a tragedy. This weekend was a really big weekend for myself and my family. My wife and 16 year old step-son completed the process of conversion to the Jewish people! They did it through our local Reform temple (a wonderful community that I'm proud to be part of), which involved a lot more ritual and ceremony than my own conversion through the #Humanistic movement a few years previous.

But much more important than noting this difference, the biggest takeaway for me was how touching my family's earnest and intense desire to join this tradition was. This was best shown by their nervousness. ---- Despite my frequent reminders that, "the rabbi wouldn't be sponsoring before the bet din if she had any concerns about your Jewishness" they were both so anxious, and it was such a beautiful, precious thing that they cared so much.

And I got to be there for it all --- they let me sit in the room during the #BetDin (both of them did great as I knew they would) and then I got to be my son's witness for the #mikvah. It was such a moving day.

Typing this mostly for my own memories, but also because I'm so proud of my household for now being 100% converts to #Judaism, which makes it all the more precious. We all worked for this and I think it is a good thing to be proud of.

#Babka has been dealing with some challenges when it comes to antisemitism from other instances, so I want to say something unequivocally:.

Whether that's Babka Social, another Babka project, or something else altogether, #Jews need a space free of antisemitism. We need a place to come together and celebrate, find connection and family, as well as discuss and debate.

This weekend I finished up my next test design - Lady Wisdom! Strategy is her forte, and numerous arts & crafts. She was present at creation, says Psalms, and is traditionally depicted with an owl & the spear of truth.

In the late 19th and early 20th century, Yiddish #theater star Jacob P. Adler (right) was known for playing Shylock in "The Merchant of Venice." His portrayal was no villainous cliche but a proud #Jew who, even in defeat, left the stage with his head high.

Invited to bring the show to Broadway in English (which Adler spoke with a heavy accent), he agreed to a compromise: everyone else spoke in English but Shylock spoke #Yiddish.

I'm starting to wonder if some #antisemitism comes from the fact that #Jewish cultural normal differ from non-Jewish cultural norms, especially Christian ones, and what can appear to non-Jews as behavior that is strange, or possibly even antagonistic.

For example, the "Jews buy from other Jews" trope, which has more to do with network effects than any kind of conspiracy, or the role of assertiveness in speech and commerce.
