I got advice from Medicare about countering Medicare fraud. Some of the advice was good, but this:

I also remember when shit like #Medicare Part D was implemented under GW Bush, back when the GOP figured out ways to expand healthcare access while enriching their cronies.
They don't seem to even care that much, anymore.
As a family physician, I know this crap. I know what all the Medicare parts are. I know how they can be modified by inviting a corporation to mediate between myself and the government, and the government and my doctors. I know some of the pitfalls and traps intentionally placed for me.

It does not matter. My pharmacist had to type for 10 minutes because *some* people are covered and *some* aren't. Why? Because of the bloody private insurances.
I was also going to buy some chips... but one of the self-checkout machines did not want to print, and it was stuck in "help is on the way" mode. Then the 2nd checkout machine decided that the product that the guy was buying needed age verification.

So the 2nd machine got into "help is on the way" mode, except that the one help was busy helping someone else. I dumped my chips on the counter, said "help is on the way," and got the hell outta there.

Yesterday I got my Medicare Summary Notice, a quarterly report documenting services and supplies that Medicare has paid for on my behalf. I usually glance at these to see if there might be an impending bill for me, for something that Medicare and/or the secondary insurance did not fully cover. Imagine my surprise when I discovered that Medicare had been billed for two batches of urinary catheters (total of 400 units) that were supplied to me last April and May by a home-care provider based in Bethel, Connecticut. Grand total for these was $3800, and after Medicare paid what Medicare allowed, I might still be on the hook for almost $700.
So I called the Medicare fraud number, waited on hold and provided copious amounts of information to “verify my identity”, and pointed out that I did not remember getting these catheters in Connecticut, and I was pretty sure that catheterization would have been memorable, at least according to what I have read and heard. The lady on the other end of the line agreed that it probably would be something that I remembered, and initiated a “fraud investigation” process that would get to the bottom of this. So far, so good.
I asked if I should contact the secondary insurance folks, since they had probably been billed for the $700 remainder, and was told that I should definitely do that. Another phone call, another wait on hold, another reciting of information to verify my identity, and the outcome of this one was that the company who allegedly delivered the catheters to me was already known to them as fraudsters. Dunno why the Medicare folks did not have the same information, but apparently, they did not, since they paid most of the bill submitted by the fraudsters. I hope that they can get it back before the GOP accuses Hunter Biden's laptop as a co-conspirator.
So pay attention to your mail, fellow oldsters, and you too could get hours of entertainment like this!
Medicare spending has leveled off over more than a decade. One reason why: The Affordable Care Act reduced Medicare’s payments to hospitals and health insurers, reducing per-person spending.
Unfinished business now is finding a way to add dental/vision/hearing benefits to original Medicare. Could they be added to Part B Supplemental Plans or established as a new Part E? People shouldn't be pressured into private Medicare "Advantage" Plans.
