Anyway, I just felt like talking about this out loud.
I know these days the concept of #mementoMori is used as motivation, as cause for action. Weirdly enough, for me it is a goal instead. I don't get things done because of the thought of my own mortality; I get it done to be constantly reminded of my inevitable fate.
My physical brain will, one day, fade away. I hope the journey to build my mind's backup will be a wothrwhile purpose in my life.

Veo que una chica española de unos 20 años fallece de cáncer de hueso. Una chica hermosa y radiante, luchando contra algo que en definitiva no tiene bajo su poder más que cómo puede responder su cuerpo ante un terrible tratamiento y ante una terrible enfermedad. Sonríe, habla de fuerza, resiliencia y optimismo. Me pregunto, sin modo alguno cuestionar ni juzgar en nada, cuánta presión conciente o no hay sobre alguien en esa posición, o tantas otras. Se nos enseña a tener pavor al dolor, a la tristeza, a la muerte. Nuestro primitivo instinto de supervivencia nos aleja de aquello que nos puede dañar si por ejemplo lo ingerimos o tocamos, ya sea por la repulsión ante olores o texturas. Pero los olores y texturas del dolor y la muerte nos rodean todo el tiempo porque nos atraviesan aunque no querramos ver. Sabemos que algún día moriremos. Amigos y enemigos también, pero aprendimos que debemos mirar para otro lado, porque es todo demasiado horrible y difícil.
Y ahí tenés toda una industria y una cultura que al mismo tiempo que enseña lo feo de la mortalidad, te enseña que si no la peleas, si no mostras "resiliencia", si no mostras que amas la vida, no mereces ganar. Por supuesto no de forma directa. El sentido común en torno a palabras como "guerreros", "luchadores", "valientes", "optimistas", hace al discurso de la voluntad como principal motor, incluso para esquivar la muerte. No hay lugar para débiles, para quienes quizás no desean seguir, o sí, pero en otros términos. La narrativa imperante hace que el asumir el terror absoluto ante lo omimoso sea condenado, no vaya a ser que incomodes demasiado, no vaya a ser que a los demás, con la culpa de seguir vivos o sanos, vayan a sentirse aún peor. Y así se vende que enmascarar es estoicismo, caricaturizando toda humanidad. Sin embargo, ¿Qué ocurriría si un paciente con cáncer "abandona" la guerra? ¿Qué ocurriría si decide suicidarse o, como pasa muchas veces, no opta tratarse? ¿Cuál sería el límite entre una muerte y la otra? Decenas de miles de personas se suicidan, y el tabú respecto a la muerte y cómo debe ser paradójicamente vivida en esos casos se refuerzan. Ya no hay guerreros, ya no hay luchadores, solo débiles que no quieren enfrentar la vida, los que solo desean llamar la atención de los otros, los sanos, los que verdaderamente pelean.
Es dolorosamente llamativo para los que sufren desde la desesperación o simplemente desde la inercia de la existencia. La vida siempre parece un premio a ser merecido, no un derecho. La muerte en todas sus expresiones parece un castigo del cual inevitablemente todos tenemos un número, y en el fondo el miedo, siempre el miedo. No pensemos, no medites sobre qué querés ahora ni cuando estés rígido después de no respirar nunca más. No pienses sobre la muerte, menos la tuya. Es oscuro, extraño, retorcido, para eso están la religión y el arte. Y así vivimos entre eufemismos, para evitar sentir que desde que nacemls ya estamos muriendo.

A skull with pick and shovel (reminders of the grave) appear on a token commemorating the death of Elizabeth Harlow who died 29 April 1805 aged 55. Wax Vanitas (c.1700) - intended to remind us of the certainty of death. One side features a skull with insects feasting on decaying flesh. The other side resembles Queen Elizabeth I. It reads: “vanity of vanities, all is vanity.”
