Memorial Day, which for some has simply become a national holiday to mark the unofficial start of summer, had its start in the 1860s as a day to mourn the war dead of the northern states in the Civil War. Memorial comes into English both through Old French memorial “mindful of, remembering” and directly from Latin memorialis “of or belonging to memory”, from Latin memoria “memory” and memor “mindful”, from Proto-Indo-European *me-mor-, a reduplicated form of the PIE root *(s)mer- “to remember” (with that optional s-mobile at the beginning being dropped in this instance). Heute, am #DayOff hat es mich über die Grenze nach Dänemark verschlagen. Hier gab es von 1944-1945 das Internierungslager "#Frøslev".
Ein Lager, das auf Befehl der deutschen Besatzung errichtet wurde und von dem aus mehrere Hundert Insass*innen in #KZs deportiert wurden.
Hier durfte ich mal wieder feststellen, das ich auch hier einen weißen Fleck habe, zu dem ich einiges nachlesen muss.

My counterpart back east, as I run the #GoFundMe here in California, is my great-uncle Kent. Kent is handling the #funeral arrangements and we've been on the phone a lot.

Here is Kent and my grandmother this past #Easter.

The whole family in Indiana will be gathering Friday. My hope is that she lasts until then so she can spend her final moments with her brothers. She was always close with them.

This memorial, tucked away in woods outside Elstal, #Brandenburg, marks the site of a First World War prisoner of war camp where at least 305 people died.

The memorial was created in 1917 (possibly a few years earlier). The sculptor's name is not known, although it is known he was French. The monument used to be painted (the mourning woman was painted in white, hence the name Weiße Maria) although there are a few traces of colour left today.
