Dear friends,

Our local #MemorialDay #parade was a quick affair. It was mostly #FireDepartment vehicles, a few school #MarchingBands and #ColorGuards. A couple of Cub Scout troops came through (the younger boys and don't recall older Boy Scouts or any Girl Scouts) and, surprisingly, very few #veterans, maybe ten or 15 marching at the head of the parade. Some may have been in cars but not easily seen.

As a Canadian I like to take the time on US Memorial Day to remember at the end of World War II, the USA was the only nuclear power on Earth. It had troops in every major country on Earth. Its economy was strong while the rest of the world was bankrupt from 5+ years of war. The USA had the world in its hand. It only had to squeeze its fist. But it did something remarkable, something no conqueror has done in history. The USA gave the world back to itself. It left food and dollars and helped guide destroyed nations back.

The USA then, as now, wasn't perfect. But I doubt should Russia or China or one of the Axis powers have been in the USA's position, it would have been as fair and magnanimous. Well done, America. Thank you for that humanity.

It's also tragic maybe the American political establishment has lost that sense of equanimity over the decades. You can get it back.

Today (in the U.S.A.) people "celebrate" Memorial Day by gathering to grill meat, drink beer, and soak up the warmth of the start of summer. But among all the flags carefully planted along curbs in front of carefully manicured lawns, all I could think of was the pain, the screams, the dying of young people in combat—only their memory remains.

That the true origins of Memorial Day is not well remembered is not a surprise. From the start, Black Americans’ contributions to society have often been overlooked, minimized, or reappropriated. This resistance continues to this day,. For a wonderful overview of this topic, see David Blight’s book, Race and Reunion.

For me, Memorial Day has always been about honoring the dead. From my childhood, I’ve always associated this day with peonies, paper poppies, trips to cemeteries and patriotism. I grew up in a bubble, but I didn’t know how much of a bubble it was until I got older.

A Memorial Day message tucked into a tale of my childhood: Some things are worth fighting for:

By focusing on Confederate contributions, The United Daughters of the Confederacy obscured and downplayed the role of African-Americans in establishing Decoration Day, which later evolved into Memorial Day. This intentional distortion of history aimed to reinforce the Confederate narrative and marginalize the African-American contributions to American history and remembrance.

The United Daughters of the Confederacy played a significant role in minimizing the African-American founding of Memorial Day. As an organization that aimed to promote the Confederate cause and maintain the Lost Cause narrative, they sought to reshape the memory of the Civil War. They propagated the idea that Memorial Day originated solely from Confederate women's efforts, particularly in the South, to honor their fallen soldiers.

Decoration Day, now known as Memorial Day, has roots in a tradition established by Black-Americans in the aftermath of the Civil War. On May 1, 1865, the formerly enslaved, with profound gratitude for Union soldiers who fought and died for their emancipation, began commemorating that sacrifice by decorating Union graves. This remembrance and gratitude eventually gained support from communities across America.

Today is Memorial Day in the United States encouraging us to remember the sacrifices of those who fell in service to the country.

Vital to the war effort in the Pacific were Diné who spoke in their native tongue so the Japanese could not understand the transmissions. Many from other native tribes were also recruited to this effort.

"All the services, like the army, and divisions and companies, and battalions, regiments . . . we just gave them clan names. Airplanes, we named after birds . . . like the buzzard is bomber, and the hawk is a dive bomber, and the patrol plane is a crow, and the hummingbird is the fighter."
