There are many apps out there that purport to beef up your memory skills, though research on whether they work has been spotty and conclusions about efficacy are pretty limited. One thing we do know is that they're not going to magically cure major cognitive decline. Still, if a few puzzles a day help you feel better and get your gears going, it could be worth a download just to get that rush. Apps are just one of many ways to get a little brain boost, but below are some of the better ones out there.
I've tried Lumosity and Cognifit so far. Lumosity is quite nice in that it benchmarks you against others of your age profile. Cognifit was a bit more difficult and the finesse you can use your mouse with, does also make a difference. Most are time based, so you also want to make sure you are in a space where you won't be disturbed at all. Any phone alert etc is going to pull your concentration away.

I saw white Southerners pretending to move "with all deliberate speed to integrate" institutions, while refusing to move an inch.
And since that time, I've seen over and over the ravages that systemic racism and racial injustice inflict on US society, because our society as a whole has refused to move towards racial justice. Those ravages are on glaring display in the Trump era.
The problem is not moving quickly. It's the refusal to move at all.
My formative experiences watching the civil rights struggles unfold in the US South, as a white Southerner, have convinced me for my entire life of the opposite of what Last thinks:
The risks Last sees in civilizations changing too quickly, I see in civilizations moving too slowly, in refusing to change when change is morally imperative.
I saw my fellow white Southerners kicking, screaming, refusing to move to accept rights for people of color.
I remember heated, concerned discussion about that crisis when Arkansas governor Faubus defied federal imperatives to integration Little Rock's Central High and the National Guard was called in. I remember how this was discussed around my extended family's table at Christmas.
I remember the anxiety and anger, the determination of white people to resist according rights to people of color. I remember also the recognition that this was flatly wrong.
Last then invites readers to share their "earliest public memories" and how those have affected us. Because I am not a paid subscriber to Last's site, I can't respond there. What I'd have said:
I grew up in the 1950s and 1960s in the US South as the civil rights struggles became intense. Quite specifically, I was born and grew up in Little Rock, Arkansas, until my family left there in 1958.
I remember the Central High crisis in 1957.
Jonathan V. Last says that he grew up in the 1980s when Pope John Paul II and Ronald Reagan dominated the news. The two were paired in many people's minds as a kind of rock-star conservative duo who influenced a whole generation in the direction of conservatism. Last says these formative experiences convinced him:
"I have always believed that civilization is fragile, that moving too quickly carries unseen risks…."
