3/ Ragana seems to be one of the primordial goddesses- Bird Goddess aspect ( I think I need to do a deep dive and a blog post, maybe)- associated with maintaining balance: between life /death and natural forces, even balancing Sun / Saule's power- her strongest time is from summer to winter solstice as Sun wanes.

The lack of punctuation honors Merwin's eventual abandonment of punctuation marks.

The poem alludes to an educational rock set my late mother gave me one birthday long ago. It was a very special gift that increased my appreciation of geology and my love of nature.
