An #idea for #southamerica, #CentralAmerica, #mexico to deal with their #drugcartel, #Gangviolence problem. Create a solely international crime fighting department. Maybe #interpol. This will avoid corruption problems, retaliation against families. Many countries world wide would benifit with reduction in drugs. Troubled countries of the America's would have a less crime. But I doubt this will ever happen.

The Zapatistas have long been an inspiration for anti-capitalists around the world. Since 1994, the indigenous communities of Chiapas have risen up against the Mexican state, reclaimed their land, and fought against state repression.

Their autonomous communities are continually under threat. They have been fired upon, had their crops burned, and had their cows poisoned. Moreover, they have faced forced displacement, disappearances, the seizure of land, torture, and murder. Now, the Zapatistas say they’re on the “verge of civil war”.

Their statement came after Zapatista Jorge López Santíz was shot in a paramilitary attack perpetrated against the autonomous Moisés Gandhi community – which lies within the Lucio Cabañas municipality controlled by the Zapatistas – on 22 May.

Today in Labor History June 1, 1906: The bloody Cananea copper miners' strike began in Sonora, Mexico. The miners were demanding 5 pesos a day and an 8-hour workday, commensurate with what the U.S. citizens who were working side-by-side with them were earning. As many as 100 miners were killed in the strike, mostly by U.S. citizens working for the company. Although they were forced back to work without winning any of their demands, it contributed to the general unrest leading up to the Mexican Revolution.

The anarchist, Ricardo Flores Magón, along with members of his Partido Liberal Mexicana, organized a brigade of revolutionaries, who traveled from Arizona to the Cananea copper mines with the goal of exterminating all Americans employed there. The Arizona Rangers captured several of them. Magón and many others were extradited to Tombstone, Arizona, charged with violating U.S. neutrality laws, and imprisoned until 1910. After this, the Magonistas conquered parts of Baja California, including Tijuana, during the Mexican Revolution.

US officials are warning of the ramifications at the southern border with #Mexico starting Friday after the expiration of a pandemic-era #Title42 policy that kept out many asylum-seekers. As I explain in my VOA radio report authorities are bracing for what they expect will be a tremendous strain on personnel and facilities from a surge of migrants crossing the border.

((TEXT))
Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, on the White House briefing room podium just hours before the lifting of a policy that blocked migrants from entering the country during the coronavirus pandemic, made a direct appeal to those thinking of or already heading north.

((MAYORKAS ACT))

“Do not risk your life and your life savings only to be removed from the United States if and when you arrive here.” [[:08]]

((END ACT))

Mayorkas added that migrant families who fail asylum screening under the new regulations will generally be removed within 30 days.

The Biden administration faces criticism from both the political left — which says the government is now taking too harsh an approach to migration — and conservatives, who predict overwhelmed and unprepared U.S. officials will resort to a mass release of migrants.

The Biden administration is sending additional troops to the border with #Mexico starting as soon as May 10th. As detailed here in my VOA News radio report the decision comes as the government ends #coronavirus-era pandemic restrictions, known as Title 42, that allowed for the rapid removal of migrants at the border.

((TEXT)) Anticipating that the end of pandemic policies on May 11th will prompt a surge of migrants seeking to enter the United States at the southwest border, officials in Washington announced Tuesday an additional active-duty 1,500 troops will be sent to augment the 2,500 National Guard members providing border protection support.

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre says the action allows Border Patrol and Customs officers to focus on law enforcement, while the troops do administrative tasks.
