I’m late with this one! It's #Thanksgiving weekend here: too much family, too much driving, too much #tryptophan.

The word is...Xen
?

At first I thought this must be an alternate spelling for “zen,” but when I questioned our host @MarkIngs, he provided me with a definition of a supercool person. However, I found an Urban Dictionary definition of “the Generation X spelling of zen,” so I’m sticking with that.

Hüsker Dü, Zen Arcade, 1984

While this album is still largely built of short tracks that get their business done with razor-fast #guitar, #HüskerDü goes beyond #HardcorePunk with touches of melody and jangly guitar that later became hallmarks of singer/guitarist #BobMould's solo work. Here this #midwest band straddles the #California #punk scene on the #SST label and the more expansive #alternative movement, including some good old rock and roll like the anthemic Turn On the News.

What Is The Ogallala Aquifer And Why Is It Running Out Of Water?
--
https://www.kansascity.com/news/politics-government/article281504238.html <-- shared media article

"Millions of years ago, sediment from the Rocky Mountains was deposited in the High Plains. Over thousands of years, water dripped below the surface creating an underground water deposit called the Ogallala Aquifer. The water — which spans from South Dakota to Texas and was once the size of Lake Huron — at one point accounted for 30% of the crop and animal production in the U.S…
Although the water source stretches across several states it moves very very slowly. As a result, no interstate compact exists to manage the water in the Ogallala. Instead, neighbors have to band together if they want to restrict pumping…”

In the #Midwest, we love to talk about our weather.

I'm always so filled with awe when the first snowflakes fall. We run to windows.

And my texts and calls were filled with the same:

-"Mom, it's snowing here!"
-"Hey are you guys getting snow?"
-"We've had snow on and off all day!"

We celebrate it. And because it came on Halloween it was especially festive.

A few pics from my walk yesterday. Click through.

I live in #Missouri and I honestly have no idea what part of the country I live in.

Let me explain. For years, I thought I was in the #Midwest. It makes sense. The country was founded on the East Coast so everything is taken from that point of view. We’re West but we’re not THE WEST, based on the lack of cowboy gunfights and cattle herding. Mid, meaning middle. So put them together, and boom Midwest. .

But no, apparently Michigan and Wisconsin are the MidWest US. And apparently big swathes of the country completely agree on this point.

So like a displaced individual looking for another home, I thought I had settled on }Central US}. But no, I’m reading the weather and it’s says impactful storm to hit the Central US this weekend, except they’re referring to Colorado, Wyoming, and Montana. You know, places where cattle herding is common.

Meteorologists ruin everything,

So fuck it, I have no idea where I live. So don’t ask.

The Midwest US could be a hotspot for deadly ‘moist heat stress’ as global temperatures climb

Large parts of the world, including China and the Midwest US, are on track to become too hot for humans to handle as accelerating global temperatures expose billions to heat and humidity so extreme their bodies will no longer be able to cope, according to a new study.

By Rachel Ramirez, CNN
Published Oct 9, 2023

"At 3 degrees — which the study authors say is the most likely level of warming by 2100 if no action is taken — there is a sharp increase in people exposed to life-threatening heat and humidity. 'It’s really incredibly disturbing,' Huber told CNN.

"Humid #heatwaves will affect swaths of the world not used to such #extreme conditions.

"The #Midwest US will become a 'moist heat stress hotspot' at 3 degrees of warming, according to the report. The Midwest is susceptible to this kind of heat stress in part because its climate walks the line between dry and humid, Huber explained, allowing the region’s heat to push into the danger zone on very humid days.

"Another factor that makes the region vulnerable is its agriculture and the phenomenon called 'corn sweat,' Huber said.

"'The plants that we eat are sweating through evapotranspiration, and that may be adding to the humidity above what would normally be there,' he said.

"So-called 'hot hours' — times where heat and #humidity are especially life-threatening — will be concentrated in the #Missouri and #MississippiRiver valleys but also elsewhere in US including the #GulfOfMexico coast and the #AtlanticSeaboard according to the study.

"At 4 degrees of warming, the study’s worst-case scenario, researchers found that 1.5 billion people around the world would face a month of moist heat stress each year, and roughly 2.7 billion people will experience at least a week of these extreme conditions.

"Parts of #Yemen could experience heat and humidity that exceeds human tolerance for more than 300 days a year, making it virtually uninhabitable."

Husker Du released their EP Metal Circus

This was my intro to this amazing band from Minneapolis. It’s got that classic Husker Du guitar sound. Very bright, crisp, and metallic.

Favorite track is the opener, “Real World”. I’ve always appreciated a truly individualistic point of view. The punk scene was not immune to various forms of fundamentalist thinking.

Other notable tracks include the grisly tale of “Diane”, and the more pop-oriented “It’s Not Funny Anymore”, both written by Grant Hart and previewing the forthcoming change in the band’s sound.

Tomorrow morning (August 1, 2023), 8am US EST,

I am going to be chatting with Kate Archer Kent on #Wisconsin Public Radio’s (local #NPR ) Morning Show about #climate #TippingPoints #ExtremeTemperatures and more. Call in and stump me. :-)

The pitch they gave me to convince me to chat:
Is the #MidWest relatively shielded from #ClimateChange?

I’ll be pulling from

https://science2017.globalchange.gov (I’m a author on this.)
And

Personally, I’m a #nonbinary #parent of two #kids. My wife is #bisexual. Our oldest is #genderfluid, so our whole #family is pretty darn #queer. I’m very #liberal, but I do not consider myself a #leftist or #socialist, though I’d much rather hang with folks who are than anyone on the other end of that spectrum. We live in the #midwest #unitedstates.

Uh. I think that’s it. So there’s a(n extremely long) #reintroduction for you, I guess? Hope to talk soon.

‘Extreme threat’: Large swathe of southern US at dangerous ‘wet bulb temperature’

by Jeremy Tanner - 06/29/23

"Readings of a key indicator of heat exposure danger have reached the highest possible threat level in multiple southern states, as well as in a few states in the #Midwest.

"When it comes to the 'wet bulb temperature,' nearly all of #Louisiana, #Mississippi, and #Arkansas are under 'extreme threat.' The wet bulb temperature measures multiple stressors on the human body in direct sunlight, not in the shade, as the #HeatIndex does.

"When it’s hot, humans sweat to cool off, but if the humidity is also high enough there’s a point at which sweat loses its cooling effect.

"The upper limit that humans could withstand was thought to be 95 F at 100% humidity, according to a 2010 study. New research out of Penn State University’s Noll Laboratory found that the critical limit is in fact even lower – 88 F at 100% humidity."

Some parts of the #Midwest received badly needed rain on June 29, but the derecho also brought very strong winds that flattened #corn.

Drove over to Brookfield for my third funeral this year. This one, oddly, was in a megachurch. The very blond, very Waukesha County-middle-aged looking man at the door asked me how I was today and I gave a performative appraisal to the memorial ceremony about to start and shrugged and said "Shitty." This seemed an alien response to him, as if people perhaps lie about that a lot at funerals, and this may be the most #Midwest thing any non-Midwesterners can learn about the Midwest.

#introduction-

Hey, I'm Jae. A relatively chill and casual gamer, with more heart than skill, from the #midwest. Typically just watching stuff online or playing random vidya games, I'm honestly just trying to vibe most of the time.

Mainly posting about whatever comes to mind; I have nothing in specific for this account. I'll just be posting whatever I'm currently thinking about.
