Morning Tooters - on this day, 35 years ago, I set foot on Australian soil to make it my home. It was a bold move, I had no idea what to expect and to say it was a culture shock would be an understatement.
Research has shown it takes around 20-25 years for adult migrants to fully assimilate and I can confirm this 100%.
Whilst I never once contemplated moving back to Germany, it was not without significant cultural challenges in the beginning.
There were some epic cultural blunders like 'bring a plate' - with much embarrassment too.
This experience later prompted me to volunteer as an adult migrant educator in two different states - a role which I cherished. To be able to help others get settled and navigate the cultural pitfalls and language was very rewarding - especially when I got the opportunity to watch them grow in confidence, take root and repay the community through their own contributions.

Je trouve ça particulièrement cool, parce que pour une fois, c'est à Québec. Il y a souvent des manifestations de No One Is Illegal ou de Solidarité Sans Frontière à Montréal, mais rarement dans les autres régions de la province et ça donne l'impression à bien des gens que les personnes sans status sont uniquement à Montréal. Pourtant, il y en a à Québec, c'est simplement qu'on n'en entend jamais parler.

As The Guardian says today editorially, Brexit was a monumental failure, after Conservatives pushed it as a utopian quick-fix scheme to renew Britain. Now, rather than admit their mistake (and their lies about what Brexit would accomplish) Conservative leaders like Suella Braverman want to divert attention from their party's failures by scapegoating migrants.
And that scapegoating will hardly fix the UK's problems.
