Taken in the early hours of today by my husband.

The Fairy Tree at #StHelens #Duver on the #IsleofWight

#PinkThrift in bloom lit by the moon, but the light was low enough for the #MilkyWay to be just visible.

The Fairy Tree attracts a few visitors that hang trinkets from it's branches and a little doorway is visible on the trunk.

#Fairy #LandscapePhotography

A dead but characterful tree standing proudly under the stars, with a pink carpet of flowers visible in the moonlight. A slightly magical feel to this view.

Another failure on the path to the epic 8k Milky Way Timelapse.

This time, we went out and set up a tent and camped out. I set up the slider at sunset and waited for night to turn it on.

The slider made it all night, but the camera battery died halfway through :(

I will not quit until this works. It will work, and all the people will go "whoah".

I love in a town, so sadly lots of light pollution, but decided to see what I could do with the galactic core, since I have a south-facing window.

You can just about make out the #MilkyWay's galactic core in this shot. Granted VERY faintly, but if you look at it in closely, you can JUST ABOUT make it out.

More impressive is that it was shot with a smartphone, my #SonyXperia1III.

Pew pew! Here's a pic of the #MilkyWay I took a few years ago from ESO's Paranal Observatory in #Chile. The four yellow lines are lasers from the Very Large Telescope –– we use them to excite sodium atoms high up in the atmosphere, creating artificial "stars" that allow us to correct atmospheric turbulence and get very sharp images.

Occasionally we also use the lasers to play with cats on other planets 🐱

#astrodon #astronomy #astrophotography #space #universe #scicomm

An image of the night sky sprinkled with thousands of stars. A bright orange band crosses the image diagonally like a river, split in two by a central dark band of dust. Many other thin dusty filaments fill up the image, like smoke. Bright nebulae with vivid colours like yellow or magenta are spread throughout the image. Four bright yellow lasers appear from the bottom, converging towards a point at the centre of the image.

Astronomers rethink the Milky Way’s shape based on new data from the European Space Agency’s Gaia mission. The mission has mapped over a billion stars in our galaxy, revealing its complex structure and dynamics. The new findings suggest that the Milky Way has a warped disk, a twisted bar, and a clumpy halo.

On a clear night in #Chichibu, #Saitama, #Japan, I was staying in a hotel with, sadly, a north-facing window. It wasn't quite the galactic core, but I know I would be facing the edge of the #MilkyWay instead.

I decided to experiment using my #SonyXperia1III to shoot the night sky in an urban area to see what I might be able to get, and was pleasantly surprised to have been able to get this shot, just about making out the Milky Way.

A black, deep space image is dominated by a large central object. This object resembles a snowflake-like feature with a bright white core and 8 pinkish orange spikes. It is surrounded by additional wisps of pinkish orange and blue gas. In reality, this “snowflake” is actually two colliding galaxies with merging cores. The brilliant light from the star formation surrounding these cores creates diffraction spikes, an optical effect that occurs when bright light interacts with a telescope’s optics. The background is punctuated with scattered red, white and orange galaxies of various shapes and sizes.
