Is this the future of social media? It certainly is better than Silicon Valley/commercial-surveillance disinformation platforms by orders of magnitude, yes...
...but personally, I have a different view.
I recommend reading the "Public Service Internet" manifesto. It was a privilege to read it. This is one of my greater research interests as well.

Lots of jaw-droppers in Joan Donovan's Whistleblower Aid document, but the one that stood out to me (p15) was HKS' misuse of funds when she was fired (sorry, offered a part-time lectureship she turned down). They refused to give her OR consult the donor on the 3.1mill leftover of their 5mill gift to her. #misinformation

The crux of my assertion is based off of the Asch conformity experiments which shows that people are much much likely to purposefully conform to and spread #misinformation in public.

Can you explain how Mastodon is more of a buffer against the Asch conformity effect? At the very least do you have any data beyond your anecdote?
Considering the conformity effect is in full force in public spaces and #discourse, it isn't really possible to have a good faith "town square" since people will purposefully conform to what they know is wrong and thus spread #misinformation. Fear of being excluded and shame is endemic to #socialmedia.
The Asch conformity experiments are really depressing empirical cases...

As a scientist, a #queer person, a color blind person, & an occultist, I'm aware of the bullshit.
People purposefully spread misinformation to fit in, so it is an emotional and not logical reason.
Therefore, debating people who know they are wrong merely amplifies the #misinformation. It is very depressing.

While #Twitter is a hellhole, Community Notes is the one feature I think has a lot of value. It's not perfect -- it's reactive instead of proactive, and requires high participation for notes to go live (which means an incorrect tweet often needs to have received a lot of reach before it gets noted). Of the 485 notes I've rated, 76 have reached a status of helpful/not-helpful.
It isn't a solution by itself and Twitter is still rife with #misinformation, but I think it can be an effective tool in a larger toolbox.
