Hi, #FollowFriday #FollowBackFriday!

If you are interested in economic news and analysis, feel free to follow and/or check out our website http://econ-intel.com. We cover #GovernmentSpending, the #FederalReserve, #MonetaryPolicy, and a bunch more that impact all our lives.

We are one of the few sources anywhere talking about the fact that the Federal Reserve is losing money. Should be big news!

So we find ourselves interesting😉 Perhaps you will too 😀

And welcome to the weekend😃!

A metaphor for the Fed trying to reduce inflation by raising interest rates:

Doctor: You don’t get enough exercise and you eat too many fatty foods. You need to lose weight.
Patient: So, what do you suggest? Exercise and diet changes?
Doctor: That might work, but I’m an orthopedic surgeon, so I suggest amputation.

From a review of @RobertReich book: The System: Who Rigged it and How We Fix It.
“…money may not be a zero-sum situation, power is. And when America's plutocrats use money to capture power to make sure that they monopolize future money, rage swells, human potential withers on the vine, and the soul of the country changes."--Anand Giridharadas, author, Winners Take All #unite #commons #vote #stophate #monetarypolicy #righttheship

US #FederalReserve Chairman #JeromePowell recognized inflationary pressures in current data and suggested that the #ratehikes could go higher with steeper pace than anticipated.

'To restore #pricestability, we will need to see lower #inflation in this sector, and there will very likely be some softening in labor #market conditions,' #Powell said about full #employment.

As usual, hint of stronger tightening turned the #stocks red.

We have made a few posts tracking and discussing that the Federal Reserve is losing money. Obviously, this is a very bizarre outcome. Additionally, it eliminates the funds that the Fed provides to the treasury. How and why is this happening? That and related peculiar accounting procedures are discussed:
https://econ-intel.com/fed-losses-the-fed-is-losing-money-federal-reserve-balance-sheet/
@economics
#economics #MonetaryPolicy #money

The graph shows Fed losses by week and the cumulative Federal Reserve losses on the balance sheet of the Federal Reserve. Shows the Fed is losing money. As the end of 2022 the Fed lost money for 15 consecutive weeks. Losses average almost $1.2 billion per week. Accumulated Fed losses exceed $18 billion as of December 28, 2022.

The #EuropeanCentralBank (#ECB) had no #profits for the first time in 15 years in 2022 which means that the #stakeholders (other centrals and govs) won't get any #dividend.

Central reported annual #loss of more than 1.6 billion euros citing writedowns in its #bond #investments.

#Analysts weigh that the bleeding will continue for a while.

Interest rate dependent losses can surmount to anywhere between 90 and 600 billion euros.

#Eurozone #CPI show general easing of #inflationary pressures in January, with #HICP coming at 8.6% after 9.2% in December.

Unfortunately, core #inflation remains sticky, itchy, climbing 0.1% MoM.

Core measure excludes volatile #prices, such as #food and #energy, and are thus closely observed, preferred by #monetarypolicy makers.

Long story short, #monetarytightening in the eurozone will continue unabated.

The #WorkingClass is stuck between a rock and a hard place when it comes to #Inflation. Central banks massively expanded the #MoneySupply during the #pandemic, so the damage has already been done. Either central banks constrain the #MoneySupply to hold down the working class's #wages and spending power, or they can keep money supply loose and let the price of consumer goods and assets continue to grow faster than wages.

There is really only one option for the working class: #unionize. I predict that central banks will continue to tighten #MonetaryPolicy, because this creates the threat of layoffs and helps employers avoid exactly this outcome.

We need to #organize anyway, and not just through #LaborUnions. We need to help each other through #MutualAid, and we need to advocate for one another and for change, by any means necessary.

I'm not an economist, so when I read articles saying the Federal Reserve wants to slow wage growth, it sounds to me like something a cartoon villain would say. I get that higher wages theoretically lead to inflation, and I know why runaway inflation is bad, but I don't understand why everyday workers making more money is a bad sign but capitalists making huge profits over the last decade wasn't.

What should I read to understand? #economics #monetarypolicy #inflation

Currency devaluation is not the useful tool you think it is, lesson no. 341.

"Monetary independence is overrated, and the euro is riding high"
https://www.ft.com/content/0ab15f24-d491-4016-9b16-24540471e1d7

#EU #Eurozone #Euro #Devaluation #Currency #MonetaryPolicy #Economics #FT #FinancialTimes

In recent years it has — or should have — become increasingly clear that monetary “independence” in the sense of having one’s own floating currency is not all it is cracked up to be. The advantage is supposed to be that a falling currency can offset negative shocks by boosting exports. As the 2016 drop in sterling after Britain’s EU referendum demonstrated, however, in a world of long and complex cross-border supply chains, a depreciation may only make your population poorer by driving up the price of imports, with no boost to export volumes.

Climate change is a first order macroeconomic concern, and central banks need to take it seriously, otherwise we will be in for decades of macroeconomic and price instability. Let's be real: we have seen this year how much a shift in energy markets can disrupt global economies!

Something I've been working on lately has been in the news today (screenshot), and you can read the summary here: https://www.smh.com.au/politics/federal/reserve-bank-needs-climate-change-specialists-review-hears-20221104-p5bvjo.html

My team made a submission to the independent review of the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA). People normally think of central banks as being narrowly concerned with interest rates and money supply. But there's a range of ways central banks – and monetary policy – can respond to climate risk and support an orderly #NetZero transition.

I want to highlight our top suggestions – briefly in this toot, and in detaile out in the thread below.

1. disclosure of climate risk (under TCFD and NGFS frameworks)
2. reviewing the rules for collateral help from other (commercial) banks
3. advocating for the *limits* of monetary policy in achieving the RBA's goals
4. and one for the government: set clear expectations about the conduct and goals of monetary policy

Our submission: https://cpd.org.au/2022/11/rba-review/
