Hey friends, here's the second and last clip From yesterday's hike. One of the rare scenes where you see me walking away from the camera. My wife was the camera woman. There were quite some trees broken already and one broke quite close to us. - I admit that I was a bit relieved when we left the forest

I downloaded some pictures from last week, and rather like this. The Wasatch Front after the last snowfall. #silentsunday #mountains #photography

The Wasatch Front, our local mountains, seen here after a recent storm. The mountains are covered in new snow, and a layer of cloud hides the tops. In the foreground the trees are snow covered. Above the cloud the blue sky add some colour to the greys, greens, and whites. Seen from our balcony, these are about 6 miles as the crow flies.

Bright sun shining over snow-clad forest.

In the front, there are some low shrubs covered by a thick layer of snow. To the sides, taller shrubs carry brown-green leaves with some snow. Then, there are scarce tall trees growing out of the photo, with some needles on the higher half of it. In the background, thick forest can be seen with sun just above it, and a white cloud behind it. The remainder of the sky is clear blue.
A clearing covered in thick snow, surrounded by a thick forest.

In the central part, a few higher conifers in dark green shade, with snow-clad branches, loom over a smaller bare tree in the middle. The branches of that tree are covered in snow, making them seemingly shine over the background.

The trees to both sides are of various shades of brown and orange, with some white trunks. There is a set of smaller, even trees in front, to the left.

The sky is blue, with a bit of white over the trees. To the left, it's partially obscured by branches of a tree close by, with a few leftover brown leaves.
A crossroads covered in thick snow, surrounded by trees. There are barely visible tire tracks in the road leading leftwards. The sun is shining on the snow, creating shadows of trees from the left side.

The trees behind the left-right road are tall, with brown-green trunks and thick branches covered in snow. Near the tops, bright brown-yellow leaves are shining in the sun.

To the left, a low cyan post is marking red bike trail.
A snowy landscape.

In the central part of the photograph, a row of identical houses is being built at uneven distances by a road going downhill, partially hidden behind the hill. All of them seem to have two floors and a double-pitch roof. The front is red, with narrow door on ground floor and wide window (or a future balcony door?) on the first floor. The roof is covered in snow, and in two houses it is still incomplete, with bare beams visible. There is scaffolding next to every house.

In the front, there is a snow-covered road that turns left and goes by the houses afterwards. To the left of it, there are some shrubs, a red water hydrant and then a fence. A roof of a hotel is visible behind that.

Behind the houses, a dark green forest of conifers is visible. Behind that, a few forest-covered mountains. Above them, a blue-white cloudy sky, with partially-covered sun creating a bright orange-white-blue halo at the top.

September 1, 1983: The trail down the far side of Smarts Mountain was in worse shape than the ascent had been, but what did that matter to a man surrounded by that kind of magnificence? The AT lunged downward across more of those dripping, mossy rocks. It took me longer to cover the first mile down from the summit than I had needed to make that final steep mile of ascent.

It is late in the afternoon on a rather hazy day. The sky is clear and bright, but also whitewashed. We are standing on a large light gray granite outcrop striated with darker grays high up a mountain. We are looking out above the treetops of a spruce and fir forest towards another lofty mountain, dominating our view with a triangular peak and long ridges descending left and right. Beyond that, more distant ridges cascade to a misty horizon. There are a few green fields and several houses visible in the large valley below us. Most of the valley is covered with forest.

This image captures the serene scene of a snowy landscape, dominated by tones of white and grey. The main element in the scene is a fence, standing out against the backdrop of the freshly fallen snow. The scene is outdoors, enveloped by nature in its winter season. The snow-covered terrain suggests a mountainous location. The photo gives a feeling of a freezing atmosphere. The image is a black and white photo, adding a timeless and tranquil quality. The starkness of the landscape and the stillness of the scene evoke a sense of solitude and peace.

These odd scars on a mountain near Blaenau Ffestiniog are what resulted from the 1884 internal collapse of the upper parts of the Cwmorthin slate mine. The mine was known locally as 'Y Lladd-dy' ('The Abbatoir'), for very good reasons and was the site that first prompted UK workplace safety legislation.

A tiny proportion of the upper collapsed levels are accessible to properly-equipped folk, but is exceptionally dangerous. Do not venture inside, as you may well die!

Detail of collapse scars in a near-vertical drone shot.
Part-flooded tunnel of a still partly-accessible trial level, abandoned in 1877, of the upper parts of Cwmorthin. The water is freezing cold and waist-high.

After the storm the morning fog has lifted to become ragged clouds that hide the distant terrain. The very top of the picture shows a band of blue sky.

Below the clouds is a ridge of darker conifers that are lightly covered in frost, so they look a bit brighter than normal.

At the bottom, naked aspen are covered in heavy frost, and that makes them stand out brightest of all the trees.

It's been snowing all day, so we've just been at a local mountain. But we didn't get to the top - waaays too much snow and with trees breaking, we decided to make a smaller loop. But it was definitely an adventure! Clips following later!

#hiking #wandern #Winter #snow #bayern #mountains #schnee

This image captures a moment of adventure during winter, featuring a man out in the snow. The man is clad in a striking red jacket, standing out vibrantly against the pure white background. The jacket implies that he is well prepared for the freezing weather conditions. The image also suggests that he is involved in outdoor recreation, possibly snowshoeing or hiking. Notably, there's evidence of a blizzard, enhancing the adventurous spirit of the moment. The presence of glacial landform and mountain in the background adds to the overall winter theme. The man appears to be in his late twenties and has a semblance of determination and resilience against the harsh weather.

July 4, 1983: Scattered traces of the old Shenandoah formed interesting diversions in a long, pleasant woodland stroll. After Blackrock, the Appalachian Trail descended to cross Skyline Drive in a scrubby area (one of those old orchards), skirted a small picnic and camping area along the crest, and descended again to Browns Gap.

The sky is clear but hazy and gray. Objects grow increasingly bluish and indistinct with distance. We are at a lookout on the crest of the Blue Ridge, looking out over an overgrown field and down a wooded mountainside into the foothills and the valleys they enclose. The nearest valley is a swath of green fields and small farms surrounded by forest. It is very indistinct in the thick humidity. The valleys and hills beyond are ghost in the haze.

We moved to Switzerland in 2008, my grandfather unfortunately had passed away already. What would he have loved it.

Back to the trigger of this story. I found out yesterday, that on their way from Austria back to the Netherlands after the war, they stayed for 6 months in Switzerland. Three months in Clarens (near Montreux) and three months in Wilderswil: a 15 minutes drive from where I live now! The circle just closed completely yesterday.

I called with the municipality of Wilderswil, but they could not find a record of them staying there. So most likely they stayed in a hotel (like we know they did in Clarens).

Just utterly weird that my grandparents and my mother roamed the streets of Wilderswil, where I drive through quite regularly by train and bike, 78 years ago.

After the war the frequently went back to visit their friends. My grandfather was accepted in the local hiking group and went out into the mountains a lot. When my father came into play, he also joined the family in their yearly holidays in Austria, but was bothered by the fact he couldn't speak German very well.

He was already teacher in Mathematics and became a German teacher a few years later. They married, I came into this world as number 3 and we continued going to Austria for holidays (3-4 weeks a year), mostly to Klaus im Vorarlberg where we stayed at a really lovely couple my grandparents get to know in the war.

It was there that I was caught by the mountains as well.

Because of spending the time in Austria and the fact that German homework was done properly (because of the help of my father), my German level was above average. This gave me the benefit of the doubt, when I applied for a job in Switzerland.

Black and white picture of my grandmother on her way to Hoher Frassen, Austria. (May 1942)

Today a special Throwback Thursday about something I learned yesterday about my family. It also is related to the story about how I, born 2 meters below sealevel, ended up in the German speaking parts of the Alps.

My grandfather married my grandmother just before the second World War. As part of the forced labor force ("Arbeitseinsatz") he was put to work in Vorarlberg, Austria. As an electrician he had to electrify the houses in the smaller villages. Certainly not all Austrians were happy with the "Anschluss" with Germany and while working in their houses, my grandfather made some friends. He was moved around quite a lot and lived in Rankweil, Schruns, Götzis, Bregenz and others.

As he was married, my grandmother was allowed to join him, so she travelled through Nazi Germany to Vorarlberg. In Austria they where able to enjoy the mountains.

At the end of the war, my mother was born.

Kinzel Lake: Camping Day 3

Finished my trip by hiking up to Kinzel Lake via the Salmon River Trail. The Salmon-Huckleberry Wilderness is an amazing place, can’t believe I haven’t hiked in this area before. Will definitely go back as there are other trails to explore. Very successful camping trip despite the freezing temps. So happy to be able to camp this late in fall.

The Kenzel Lake Trail descends back down to the Salmon River. Green shrubs and trees line the trail. A mountain is visible in the distance with the sun rising behind it. The sky changes from bright orange to light blue.
The Salmon River goes around a bend as it flows towards the Sandy River, eventually reaching the Pacific Ocean. Tall green and yellow trees are on the river banks. Several rocks are in the river.

A weekend is a great opportunity to catch a KD Sprinter train and go the hills. This season, the best PR+KD connection from Poznań is to #Bardo, near Kłodzko. Also, it's the first weekend with snow. The first two photos are from Droga Krakowska (Cracow Road), the landscape is from the road surround Jodłowa (Fir Tree) peak, and the last one is Bystrzyca Kłodzka #river near the train station.

#SilentSunday #hiking #snow #mountains

A snowy forest road surrounded by trees.

The road is evenly covered by a thin layer of snow; there are footsteps visible to the right side. It turns slightly to the right in the distance.

Outside the road, the snow is thicker. The road is surrounded by shrubs and trees whose dense branches are all white because of the snow adhering to them. Higher trees with some visible brown trunks and green needles can be seen in the distance. The sky overhead is white, with barely visible shadings of clouds.
A clump of conifers growing on a hillside, surrounded by bare ground covered in snow and high bare trunks behind them. They green needles are covered by shining snow. The sky overhead is blue and clear.
A hilly landscape. There are some shrubs covered in snow in the front, going downhill. Behind them. from middle to the right there is a bunch of orange trees in the distance. Further on, green trees on varying altitudes are visible. In the distance, a wide hilltop is visible to the right. Further on, two connected hilltops are visible to the left. Behind them, to the left some plains are barely visible. The sky is cloudy, blue-white with some darker shades nearer.
A rushing river. The darkly shaded water is flowing to the right. There are some obstacles below the surface in the middle, causing the water to stir.

From the bottom-right corner, a tributary joins the river. A raft of ducks is swimming. The near left shore is declining towards the water, it is covered in stones. To the right there's low ground and some wooden structure, perhaps a bench. The other shore is covered by low trees. In the distance, to the right a rocky hillside is visible.

Salmon Butte: Camping Day 2

Hiked up the Salmon Butte Trail. Then, I explored an abandoned trail and a 4x4 road past the butte. The crisp air is amazing this time of year. I can’t believe I’m surviving (not bailing) the near and below freezing temps. Using a handmade quilt on top of my sleeping bag. Plenty warm. I highly recommend this trail. Awesome views at the top.

A view of Mount Adams through tall green trees. The mountain is covered in snow. Light blue sky with streaks of light gray clouds. This mountain is high on my list to explore next summer.
Mount Jefferson peaking over the Central Cascades. Miles of green forest, as far as the eye can see. Majestic blue sky with white thin clouds.
Dozens of ice cicles hanging down below a soggy green moss covered rock formation. This rock was once blasted to make room for a narrow forest road.
A trail through a forest of tall thin trees. A dusting of snow is on the ground.

Sierra Blanca is a 'sugar cookie' this Sunday morning because it's covered with a dusting of snow.

The summit is over 30 miles distant. That makes the fresh white snow look a bit yellowish, and the blue haze across the miles tints the distant flanks and lowers contrast. (A polarizer would have cut the haze and added snap to the distant terrain.)

The foreground ridge is covered in conifers, dark green.

This is a super telephoto view.

This image captures a serene winter scene, dominated by the untouched beauty of nature. A fence is central to the composition, standing solitary amidst a blanket of pristine white snow that stretches out around it, suggesting a sense of solitude and tranquility. The ambient lighting lends a monochromatic effect to the landscape, emphasizing the stark contrast between the black fence and the snow-clad backdrop. The photograph appears to have been taken on a foggy day, with the obscured visibility adding a touch of mystery to the scene. The overall atmosphere is reminiscent of a path, with the smooth, snow-covered ground gently sloping off into the distance. The wintry landscape exudes a sense of freezing cold, further enhancing the feeling of a frosty winter day.
In this picturesque scene, we are presented with the breathtaking view of a snowy mountain adorned with trees. The mountain, a majestic landform, is covered in a thick blanket of snow, transforming the terrain into a frosty winter wonderland. The skies above are cloudy, casting a serene ambiance over the landscape. Dotting the mountainside are spruces, their branches heavy with fresh snowfall.
Despite the freezing conditions, the image exudes a tranquil beauty, capturing the essence of nature's splendor in winter. The untouched snow and the cloud-covered sky combine to create a truly scenic view.
This photo captures an individual, likely a woman, engaged in a winter outdoor activity, potentially hiking. She is enveloped in a snowy landscape, perhaps near a mountain or glacial landform, given the freezing conditions. The woman is dressed appropriately for the harsh weather, wearing a vibrant red coat that stands out against the white and grey dominant colors of the snow and winter environment. To further protect herself from the cold, she has a face mask on. The image conveys a sense of solitude and the stark beauty of winter.

Autumn scene in Japan with a view of Mt. Fuji
Undiscovered Scotland

The view east from the top of (in our opinion) Scotland's best mountain, Suilven, inland from Lochinver on the west coast of Sutherland. Just 2,389ft high, the name is said to come from the Norse for "Pillar Mountain". More pics and info: https://www.undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/lochinver/suilven/index.html

The view east from the top of Suilven, inland from Lochinver on the west coast of Sutherland. The image shows descending rocky ground in the foreground leading to a narrow neck and then climbing to a sharply pointing peak, which is slightly lower than us. In the background is much lower lying land of stony ground with rivers and lochs. The sunlight is patchy.

From my "The Road Last Traveled" series.

A black and white photo of a desert highway. The highway crosses a sagebrush covered plain from the mid-lower right side of the image to the upper-center before disappearing over a rise. A gap between two mountain ranges is seen a bit to the right of where the road disappears over the rise. A nearer set of mountains rises from the center and gets taller as they disappear of the left side of the frame. A more distant range of mountains is seen on the right side of the gap. It's an overcast day. At the lower left is a round wooden cross with a top hat on the top.

Devil’s Peak: Camping Day 1

Hiked up to Devil’s Peak via the Hunchback Trail. I made a mistake and didn’t read the comments. There were significant piles of giant downed trees to climb over and around. Mount Hood looked beautiful from the top. Made it a loop on the way back by going down Green Canyon Way and then exploring the Old Salmon River Trail. Had an amazing time.

Mount Hood from Devil’s Peak. The volcano peak is covered in fresh snow and is shimmering from the sun. The tops of a few trees are in the foreground. Light blue sky.
A view of the vast Central Cascades Mountain Range. Miles and miles of forest hills and mountains of green trees. Light blue sky.
Devil’s Peak lookout tower. The old wooden tower rests on the summit of the peak. Tall green trees behind the tower. Blue sky.
A frosty trail travels along the east bank of the Salmon River. The calm river is on the left of the trail. The plants on the right side of the trail are covered in frost. The sun is shining down on the river from a blue sky.
