I have a strong feeling that the "opium" pipes are actually water pipes for tobacco, despite being catalogued as opium pipes in museums all around the world. Why might this be so – is the "opium-addicted Chinaman" really that strong a curator–collector fetish?

Are there other exoticism/orientalism/xenophobia fetishes known to have pushed object identification in this manner?

It also contains depictions of “Human Curiosities” at P. T. Today, I worked hard. The #museum display was completely dusty and full of greasy fingerprints. So first, I had to clean it.🙄 Then, without a plan, I improvised the expo of my #art. Arranging museum showcases, I can do it! 😊 For the festival at the end of October, it will be moved, this is our beekeeping section.

A glass case next to an old display cabinet in the museum. In the cabinet, historical accessories for beekeeping. In the showcase, my Biodiversity Shrines and at the bottom a jeans for visible mending. A huge handbag and an even bigger basket bag with packaging waste are standing around - only staff members are allowed to place such things.

"The #Museum of Everyday Life

is an ongoing revolutionary museum experiment based in Glover, #Vermont.

Its mission is a heroic, slow-motion cataloguing of the #Quotidian – a detailed, theatrical expression of gratitude and love for the minuscule and unglamorous experience of daily life in all its forms.

We celebrate #Mundanity, and the mysterious delight embedded in the banal but beloved objects we touch #Everyday.

In pursuit of this mission, some of the questions we ask ourselves are: What would it be like to imagine a museum filled, not with exotic objects, but with perfectly familiar ones?"

In #Bremerhaven huldigen wir ihnen sogar mit einem #Museum, dokumentieren die Geschichte und die Motivation. Jan Adam Kruseman was the leading society painter of the Dutch Romantic period. The women he portrayed belonged to the rich classes who were able to follow the Parisian fashions. He painted their fashionable hairstyles, hats, shawls and accessories in minute detail. Though this seems almost mocking now, it wasn't at the time. This painting is currently on view at Kunsthal Rotterdam.

We visited the gift shop of our local medieval center, because my husband had a gift card he wanted to use there.

This is the type of outdoor reenactment #museum that has a bunch of volunteers wandering around in period clothing, giving guests 'personal' insight into daily life in #medieval Denmark.

As we were waiting to pay, an elderly woman reenactor came by the shop & excitedly told us the jousting tournament was starting & we should hurry if we didn't want to miss it. I explained that we were only visiting the shop today & would be sure to see it next time.

My husband then asked my son if he wanted an ice-cream. The reenactor lady looked longingly at the treat & sighed "I can't have ice-cream."

My husband looked at her empatheticly & said "I'm so sorry to hear that. Is it a dietary issue?"

To which the woman swirled her long wollen skirt, & replied with a cheeky grin "No, it's because I don't know what ice-cream is."

I laughed way too hard.

Went to the China’s hidden century exhibition in the British Museum yesterday. Fascinating show and some absolutely breathtaking pieces but very striking they didn’t talk about how the objects were acquired. There were some references to British colonialism but you could easily miss them. A point in case this beautiful portrait of a Pekingese Dog. It was named ‘Looty’ because it was loot from the Summer Palace in Beijing during the Second Opium War. The vile Queen Victoria named it. #museum

France's first museum dedicated to the world of mathematics, Maison Poincaré, is the newest addition to Paris's Latin Quarter. The research-based venue, which opened its doors this week, is to be managed by the Sorbonne University.

The museum is spread over 900 square meters in an historic building adjoining the Institut Henri Poincaré – which had been looking for a bigger home for its research projects.

An item from the Smithsonian’s collection listed as “Une Martyre (Saint Thechla)” with the artist listed as Sarah Paxton Ball Dodson, born Philadelphia, PA 1847-died Brighton, England 1906.

The museum’s description is:
Many of Sarah Dodson’s paintings were inspired by religious or mythological subjects. This image shows Saint Thechla (or Thecla), who converted to Christianity and renounced marriage after hearing a sermon by the Apostle Paul. Her family and fiancé condemned her disobedience, and Thecla was cast to her fate among lions and poisonous snakes. Nothing could harm the girl, however, and she was eventually set free. This idea of a young, confident girl following her own path regardless of other people’s expectations evokes Dodson’s own life, as she struggled to establish herself as a professional painter.

Little white electrical van, just big enough for local deliveries. Cute, if you can use that word about any kind of car. It’s parked outside a local community centre under a huge lovely leafy green overhanging tree. Beyond, a glimpse of cloudless blue sky, lots of parked bikes, a row of old red-brick apartment blocks. We are looking at the back door of the van. On it, lower right, in big black capital letters Køn. ‘Køn’ is the Danish word for gender. Beside it (my translation) ‘The Cultural History Museum for Genders’. This is the work van of Køn, the Gender Museum here in Aarhus. Filling the van’s whole white back door, the museum’s logo, which is big red X painted through the museum’s slogan: 'Museums Are Awesome Because Everyone Shuts The Fuck Up.'

Art for today. #SFBA fam, it may seem a bit out of the way from the City's and the Town's art scenes, but I found this pair of exhibits at the St Mary's College Museum of Art in Moraga to be well worth the visit.

"Corita Kent: heroes and sheroes" is a small but mighty collection of Kent's graphic art supporting social justice in the late 60s. "Lisa Congdon: Hold it Lightly," in both its pop art color palette and its "themes of joy, liberation, and radical inclusion," is the perfect contemporary chaser.

I've long been an admirer of both women, so it was a delight to be able to see their work so close to home.

A photo of one of the rooms filled with Lisa Congdon's work. The walls are painted white with bold geometric shapes in cobalt blue and salmon pink. In the center of the room, there is an arranged pile of cube shaped cardboard boxes, covered with prints of her work. The walls are covered with white framed, graphic art, featuring bold colors and shapes or hand-lettered phrases, such as RADICAL LOVE and RESIST MUCH OBEY LITTLE.
A photo of a pair of Corita Kent's serigraphs, framed in white. One has a background in florescent pink, the other orange, and the text printed in black flows across both pieces. In wood type print, it reads, THE MOMENT IN WHICH LIGHT COMES IS GOD, while scrawled in caps below, it reads, ONLY YOU AND I CAN HELP THE SUN RISE EACH MORNING. IF WE DON'T IT MAY DRENCH ITSELF OUT IN SORROW. —Camus

Today Max’s Mobile Museum #M3 is at Estudillo Elementary School in San Jacinto, CA. Among the nearly 100 specimens on display is this “elbow-bone” (technically, the olecranon process of the ulna) from the extinct camel Camelops hesternus. It’s from the #Pleistocene of Temecula, and is covered with bite marks from a carnivoran. The images show the #3dprint in the Mobile Museum, and the original specimen @westernsciencecenter.

I wish I could go to Oxford to see this exhibition! I actually proposed something very similar at the Fenimore (a comparison of earlier vegetable dyes and later synthetic ones), and I hope we get to do it someday. #museum #ashmolean @fashionhistory

Carved from wood, this 16th-century figure shows a corpse inside a coffin. The body is decaying and worms are spilling from the stomach. The coffin is a memento mori, an object that reminds the viewer of the shortness of human life & the inevitability of death.

"America never deindustrialized. It just scaled down its industries in the manufacturing sector of the economy while concentrating industrialization in other parts of the economy—like education... Education is an industry with the same exploitation and disparities of power, privilege, and resources as any other. It has transformed from local, community-based schools to an industry in the same way the retail, service, logistics, legal, healthcare, hospitality, railroad, construction, maritime, agricultural, and other industries have."

If you're trying to drag a few more people over here from over there, and any of those people are #museum, #gallery, #library or #heritage people, point them towards this free* training I'm doing next week.

I'm aiming to use my experience of moving over to #Mastodon to help others overcome some of the tricky, slightly confusing bits & get them kick-started with a ready-made community of museum education & adjacent folk (made largely of those who attend on the day!)

"This is a union busting tactic. All of this is. Vouchers, charter schools standardized testing, and teacher evaluation schemes were all created with two purposes in mind: destroy the teachers' unions and privatize education. The end goal was 'dismantling tax-supported public education in urban areas' (Rooks 2017).

From "The Industrialization of Education: Phase Three, 1992-Today", see the whole piece, and find Phases One and Two on our website and blog.

PHILADELPHIA’S MÜTTER MUSEUM IS REVIEWING ITS COLLECTION OF HUMAN REMAINS. HERE’S WHY THAT MATTERS FOR DISABILITY REPRESENTATION by Riva Lehrer (Art in America, 2023).

"The Mütter joins medical and natural history museums around the world who are debating the ethical treatment of human remains. There is the question of provenance: at the Mütter, some specimens may have been accepted into the collection under dubious or outright unethical circumstances. Mütter curator Anna Dhoty has written about one unclear holding. Other provenance issues have recently been resolved after decades of negotiation. And in some instances, there is virtually no paper trail at all.

All this gets at a deeper, more troubling question: can it ever be ethical to own, or exhibit, someone else’s body? And if so, how should those bodies be displayed?"
