I've been asked an interesting question yesterday that stumbled me first and made me think: which #museums do I like most?

There are certain topics that draw me in: Asian art, ancient history (and art), everything art nouveau & symbolism, old Dutch masters, design, Jewish stories, etc.

But what I like most is to learn something interesting and fascinating about something I did not know I was interested in before. To get my eyes opened to something.

How would you answer the question?

I had an inspiring chat this morning with someone who's developing an #art & #music activity for a #museum...

...and wants to make sure that the young people who will take part will see the #maths that exists within it too.

Often, #museums can help visitors to explore #mathematics without creating anything new; they just need to open their eyes, hearts and minds a little wider.

Writing a paper about #museums for an upcoming conference. It's been so long, I'm not sure I really remember how to write a conference paper, so I'm compensating by putting in jokes about bad museum cafés.

Screenshot of text, reading —

"Beyond learning: And this raises a question: how should we see this curious business of visiting museums? Is it a way of learning? In part, perhaps. But learning doesn't entirely capture what is going on. It is not that we don't learn from visiting museums. We may learn many things: the history of art, or of slavery, or of colonialism, or of early civilisation; the fact that we are impatient with others' children and indulgent with our own; the melancholy truth that cakes in museum cafés are not dependably fresh; the painful realisation that we no longer climb the museum stairs with the energy we did as a child; the dawning awareness that sometimes, museums can be pretty boring, but if we continue to hang around despite this, we often find they become interesting again. And so on."

I was poking through #DigitalNZ (as I thought it could be a good way to add things to @ExhibitExplorer without having to write an API interface for each one) however I discovered so much there is marked 'All Rights Reserved'.

I know that DNZ is just reproducing what was given to them by the source, but for example Teviot museum with its less than a thousand pictures of old things like this https://digitalnz.org/records/47527339/iron-kerosene-domestic-iron oughtn't be restricting their use, it serves no purpose as far as I can see. Or University of Otago (hmm, I probably can figure someone to prod - @micheinnz are you still around there?), which has 38,000 images. Of which 44 are shareable. That's pretty shameful.

On the other hand, DNZ allowing me to filter on this is pretty great, will have to take a couple of evenings and do some deeper exploring. It'd be good to just be able to review a source from them and switch it on by adding a config entry or something.

“This image shows a massive structure that forms a three-dimensional black metal grid, nine levels high. The structure is longer than it is wide. The grid is filled in with objects, especially plants. There are a variety of plant species of various sizes scattered throughout the grid. The plants are all in pots, ranging from unique ceramic pots to common clay pots. Wand-shaped bright LED lights are attached to various points on the grid, horizontally and vertically. The grid also contains bust-shaped yellow sculptures, stacks of books, and a few videos playing on small analog tv sets.” (text from the Museum website)

Museum guards spend hours with the artifacts they watch over, so of course they’re going to have opinions about #art and #curation. Get to know 2 of the guards who participated in the Baltimore Museum of Art's 2022 show, “Guarding the Art.” They’re not just protecting the art; they’re in a relationship with it and how people react to it. I'm looking for #museums to add to @ExhibitExplorer - if anyone knows of a #museum with a good open API for their catalogue please let me know.

I'd especially like ones outside the angloshere/Western Europe for variety, but any suggestions will be added to my list, my research tends to cover English and European ones but I can't tell if it's because that's what searches show up or they are more likely to have public APIs. I don't mind if I have to request a key.

Sadly the #Powerhouse museum seems to have deactivated their API so there's now a hole to fill. If you happen to know who to ask about that, it'd be also useful, my email went unanswered.

Please boost for coverage.

Milan's Biblioteca Ambrosiana receives just 180,000 visitors a year — a tiny number compared to, say, the Vatican Museums, which welcome that many in a week.
